Every year, we start this thread so that people can see where everyone is applying with what credentials.

2010 - http://www.mathematicsgre.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=357
2011 - http://www.mathematicsgre.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=495
2012 - http://www.mathematicsgre.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=685

I will warn you, however, that mathematics graduate programs do not pick people with some sort of strict formula. That said, I believe that the years of data that are forming on this site are a good source to see where students might be competitive. Keeping that in mind, please adhere to the following format:

Undergrad Institution: (School or type of school (such as Big state/Lib Arts/Ivy/Technical/Foreign (Country?))
Major(s):
Minor(s):

Undergrad Institution: Smallish Liberal Arts (highest degree is masters), well known in Midwest for Masters Level Universities; Math Program not so much.
Major(s): Mathematics and Physics
GPA: overall: 3.73 Math 3.89 Physics 3.73
Type of Student: DWM

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 160 (82%)
V: 163 (88%)
W: 4.5 (73%) (apparently I suck at writing... the whole 30 minute essay concept is bullshit anyway)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: Taking November 10... practice tests from ETS put me in the 65-75% range.
39%...I am pretty shocked and disappointed. This is going to kill my app...

Program Applying: Applied Mathematics (some don't let me specify)

Research Experience: 4 years of experimental biophysics; three posters at national conferences and a talk at a not so big conference. An REU in experimental Dark Matter Physics at Nevis Labs(i.e. columbia university) with a talk and research report (the link to it is on my CV). Some dark matter phenomenology work (got a university research grant from a proposal i wrote) and a semester in fuzzy logic applied to voting rules (which literally lets you prove nothing because truth values are continuous from 0-1).
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Got to apply for Goldwater from my school; unfortunately I suck and didn't even get honorable mention. Lots of other miscellaneous scholarships for excellence in math/physics as well as Deans list entire college career.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Upper Division Maths Tutor (Diffy-Q, Linear Algebra, Abstract Algebra and Analysis). Calculus I+II grader and have graded a proof based course in Linear Algebra.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: My letters should be strong... although it is two physicists(whom I have done research with for 4 years now) and a mathematician (who I have taken half my upper division courses from including a graduate level topology course as independent study)..
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Lots of computer programming experience from research. My math advisor went to Texas A&M and his advisors are till there...

Applying to Where: (Color use here is welcome)
Dreaming:
Berlin School of Mathematics - Mathematical Physics and Geometry - Applied on 12/15 (doesn't look like they need MGRE!) - Rejected 1/28/13
University of Washington Seattle - Applied Maths- Admit to Masters without guaranteed funding... i.e. a rejection?

Reasonable:
University of Oregon - Mathematics - inquired on 3/18 = rejection :(
University of Colorado Boulder - Mathematics - rejected 2/20 by generic email. In fact, my was above their averages mentioned (GRE/GPA scores)... HA
University of Massachusetts Amherst
Safeties:
North Carolina State University - Applied Mathematics - submitted
University of Pittsburgh - Applied Mathematics -submitted

University of Vermont - Applied Mathematics - 2/20 via email, asked if I would consider masters w/ funding; I said yes. Official letter arrived 3/9.

Here we go!

Undergrad Institution: UC Riverside (UCR)
Major(s): Mathematics, B.Sc., with an emphasis in Pure Mathematics
Minor(s): NA
GPA: 3.936 overall, 3.922 upper division math.
Type of Student: DWM

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 161 (83%)
V: 162 (89%)
W: 4.0 (49%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 680 (56%) Just because of this score, I'm very worried about my applications.

TOEFL Score: NA

Program Applying: Pure Math

Research Experience: Since January 2012 I have been doing research in commutative algebra, specifically in the field of integer-valued polynomials. No publications yet, but it will culminate into an Honors thesis, which I hope will contain publishable results. I gave a talk in the graduate commutative algebra seminar and for the undergraduate math club in November, and I'll be speaking in the graduate student seminar and again for the graduate commutative algebra seminar and for the Math club in Winter 2013.

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Regents' Scholarship at my school, will graduate with University Honors as well as Departmental Honors. Also got the Honors Scholarship.

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: I'm a high school math tutor (unfortunately, given I commute from 30 miles away and I have a demanding family, I can't do much on campus). I am also certified to teach ACT prep courses for Princeton Review. I'm a volunteer and peer mentor for the math club.

Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I am in my 5th grad course this quarter (Fall 2012), and I plan on graduating with 8 grad courses. I participate in the graduate commutative algebra and math in the environment seminars. I think I'll get a very strong letter of rec from my thesis advisor, and one of my other recommenders is quite famous within mathematical physics. My last recommender is somewhat well-known within analysis with several complex variables and complex differential geometry; amazingly, he showed me his letter (with no prompting whatsoever!), and it's glowing, although it's a little vague. I also think I've written a great set of essays I can tailor to each school.

Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter:
I have a strong interest in commutative algebra and homological algebra, and I will state it. I also like algebraic geometry and category theory from the little bit I've learned, and I'm open to going into algebraic number theory and algebraic K-theory.

Applying to Where:

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship: Rejected 3/29

Snowball's chance in hell
UC Berkeley: Rejected via Email to check website 3/1. Honestly, I'm completely unfazed.

Reach
UCLA: Rejected 1/30
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor: Rejected 3/13 (second wave. Maybe they seriously considered me?). Should have expected this, but I'm bummed. I really thought I was Top 20 school material. :(
Cornell: Rejected via Email 2/20. Expected.

More reasonable
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign: Unofficially rejected via email 3/3. I inquired. (second wave. Maybe they seriously considered me?) Surprising. I'm devastated.
Purdue: Unofficially waitlisted via email correspondence (I inquired) 4/1. Rejected via email 4/11. Wow. I was really thinking I'd get in with my credentials. WTF?
Ohio State: Accepted 2/1; checked Buckeye Link. Financial info received 2/12: $1875/mo for Ph.D. track and $2090/mo if I'm regular Ph.D. status (meaning I pass the necessary basic qualifying exams in algebra and analysis). Offered additional fellowship on 3/1, details clarified on 3/4: no teaching first year, and I make $2210/mo before I pass my quals and $2425/mo after I pass my quals ATTENDING :D
UCSD: Rejected 3/2. Really shocked by this rejection. I thought this was a safer bet.
UCI: Accepted 2/21. $17,655.00 – Teaching Assistantship; $14,280.00 – Fee Fellowship Declined 4/2.

Safety
UCR: Will withdraw.

Any feedback on the schools I'm applying to and what other schools I should look into given my interests would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! :D

Retrospective: I fared far worse than I thought I would, but I'm happy I got into OSU with a generous fellowship. How I fared really confuses me. My GPA is exceptional. I took almost every undergraduate course I possibly could, AND I'm graduating with 8 grad courses. I thought my letters of recommendation were solid (really starting to doubt this now), because I really got to know my professors. One of my recommenders I unfortunately only really had for "easy" courses, and I had not been in contact with him since Freshman year before the fall quarter, but I felt we connected well enough that would compensate; maybe I should have had another professor who I had for more advanced coursework and had been in more continual contact with. I've always felt stupid around my thesis advisor (don't we all?), and he's not a super "warm-and-fuzzy" kind of person, though he is a nice guy and he's always been patient - I have a feeling that his letter didn't contain particularly strong, compelling language because it's maybe not really in his nature, so maybe I made a mistake in getting a letter from him - then again, you generally should get letters of recommendation from research advisors. My GRE scores are weak, but not too bad for the bottom end of top 20 or Purdue, I'd have thought, but perhaps I'm wrong. I also made the mistake of sending all my GRE Subject Test scores (650 in October 2011, 680 in October 2012, and 670 in November 2012) to Purdue, Ohio State, Cornell, and UIUC; I should have just bitten the bullet and shelled out another $100 to only send my best score. I studied my ass off for the Subject Test, but I didn't study smart. If I were to do it again, I would make sure I have mastered (meaning take and get near perfect) all practice tests taken up to a given point before taking another. Also, start studying earlier; study ALL SUMMER, as soon as you get out of school. You should not be seeing anything for the first time when late September/early October rolls around. I also felt like I really nailed my essays with my last application and my other application essays paled in comparison when I looked back at them: this goes to show that you should be CONTINUALLY revising your essays and START WRITING THEM IN THE SUMMER.

Applying to Where:

N.C. State (Biomath) -- Accepted 2/13! TA 16K/9mo, tuition waver, health insurance, plus additional $4K fellowship. So $20K the first year ATTENDING!

Let's try this again :)

Undergrad Institution: Small (~10,000 students) State School
Major(s): Math
Minor(s): Physics
GPA: 3.5 (slightly higher for math)
Type of Student: Domestic white female

GRE General

V 163 91%
Q 162 86% (Should I retake?)
W 4.0 49%
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M:
590 (36%) Awful, I know, but almost everywhere I'm applying doesn't require it

Program Applying: Pure Math

Research Experience: A small summer research project (graph theory/combinatorical stuff) but I didn't get a paper out of it. I also have done two REUs in physics (one in materials, one in nuclear) but I'm not sure they're relevant

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean's list, the usual stuff.

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: I've worked in our school's math tutoring lab, effectively teaching our survey of calculus course, as well as helping students in the calc series with homework and studying. This last summer, I also did private tutoring for a student in a remedial course. I also ran the math club for a couple of years, been the student representative on a couple of committees for the department and for the college of science

Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I'm currently enrolled in a couple of graduate classes (Real Variables, Ring Theory), and I will be taking Algebraic Geometry, Complex Variables and Approximation Theory next semester. One of my recommenders has a friend at one of the schools I'm applying to and I've talked to him a couple of times about their program. Another of my recommenders worked (for a long time) at another place I'm applying at, so hopefully that will help.

Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I was primarily a physics major for until about a year ago, so my grades aren't fabulous and I ended up taking a fifth year. Also, I messed up and accidentally sent my subject test score to ASU, even though they don't require it, so I don't think that will do me any favors...

Applying to Where:
Reach:
Washington University in St. Louis Wait listed February 20 Accepted 3-27 with 20k fellowship for the first year (and support of some kind with "sufficient progress") ATTENDING!

Hopeful:
Virginia Tech
Arizona State Accepted February 8, 17K TA-ship(Feb 19) (Declined offer March 21)
University of Missouri Accepted February 25, 16K TA-ship plus scholarship total 18k

More Reasonable:
Louisiana State UniversityAccepted February 26, 21,500 TA-ship (Declined offer Feb. 28)
University of KentuckyGot a phone call on April 15 offering acceptance and support, but I had already accepted at WashU

Safety:
My undergrad institution
One of the state schools in my home state

Does anyone have any advice? I was a lot out of my league last year (you can see in my profile in the 2012 thread that I didn't get in at almost everywhere I applied), so I'm a little worried that I might be over applying again, even though my application is much stronger this time around.

Moral of the story:
Grad classes. Holy crap those are important. I wish someone had told me that during my freshman year. The other thing is safety schools. I maybe should've applied at more high ranked schools, but it did a ton for my sanity to have some safeties.

Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I went to community college and since I had finished the calculus sequence I took the only two more math classes available in the community college my first semester. L3inad: Dude, you look amazing. Your publications will really stand out. You shouldn't be worried at all that you went a year and a half without taking math; grad schools care about what you've done recently more than anything, and it sounds like you've made excellent use of your time. I'd practically guarantee you UCSD, UIUC, CMU, and Rutgers. All the other "unreasonable" schools look within your reach; I think you'll get a mix of acceptances and rejections from those, but I'd bet you'll get into at least one. Nice job! I'm intimidated!

(Been a reader of these threads for years... So stoked I finally get to be a participant this year :D )

Undergrad Institution: Big 10 State School
Major(s): Philosophy, Political Science
GPA: 3.2
Type of Student: DWM

Graduate Institution: Cal State Campus
MS: Applied Math
GPA: 3.90

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 164 (90%)
V: 162 (89%)
W: 4.0 (49%) . . . Looks like that philosophy degree didn't pay off ;)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 660 (52%) . . . My first attempt, October 2012. I studied all summer, using the Princeton and REA books, as well as Stewart's Calculus text and Paul's Online Notes. Not excited about the score, but not too worried either. My recommendation if you're reading this and considering grad school, STUDY YOUR ASS OFF!!!! It's not just for the app, it's good math to know, all about the FTC and other central math topics... but I digress :)

TOEFL Score: N/A

Program Applying: Pure Math, possible intended specialization in Combinatorics, Analysis, or Numerical Analysis (really, I enjoy most of the subfields!)

Research Experience: None
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Awarded Merit-Based scholarships each year of my grad program
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Teaching associate as a grad student, remedial courses, 100% responsible for all aspects of the courses
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: My recommendations are stellar, thanks to the fact that most of the students in my program aren't interested in transferring to PhD programs.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Would like to think I rocked the Statement of Purpose ;)

Applying to Where: (All apps are for pure math.)

Reach(?):
(I'd like to think I'm competitive with these guys, possibly minus UCLA)

U. Michigan
UCLA - Rejected: Meh, I've heard the dept is fairly unsupportive, and don't really like the idea of living in L.A.
UC San Diego
U. Wisconsin - Rejected
U. Minnesota
U. Washington
Rutgers
UC Davis - Accepted with Fellowship: My most tempting offer so far

Safeties:

U. Oregon
U. Pittsburgh
Northeastern
UC Riverside - Accepted with Fellowship AND addt'l $12k stipend: So tempting, we'll see....

Safer Safeties:

UC Santa Cruz
Dartmouth
U. Vermont
U. Idaho

wrightw1982, could you share why you put UCSC in the less competitive position than UCR? cause i thought the other way about them.

Re: 2013 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results

Posted: Mon Dec 03, 2012 2:28 am
by rmg512
Yeah. I thought so too. UCSC is ranked lower, but Santa Cruz is a more popular destination. Michigan is also right around as difficult to get into as UCLA. A friend of mine got into UCLA but was rejected by Michigan, and he had absolutely amazing credentials. Davis is also pretty competitive. They're especially strong in Topology; equals with UCLA in that respect according to US News and World Report.

And, I feel your pain, wrightw1982. I studied ALL summer TWICE for the exam. Got a 650 the first time and 680 the second time. I feel I wasn't nearly as conservative on guessing as I needed to be, either, and I didn't adjust my approach very much for the November test. :(

Good luck!

They never said that anywhere I saw on their website, I just got an email hinting that if I got my stuff in before their semester ended I would get a response shortly. I am just happy I already got into a school.

Exact same thing happened to me. I think I got off by a question on the answer sheet fairly early (I was skipping around a ton... not suggested!). When I left the test I definitely felt I was in the 70-80 range, but I guess not. My advisors have actually told me not to worry about it because it is so off base with the rest of my app: if they decide to judge me just on my test score but not anything else they're crazy haha. So don't worry about it too much... hopefully the rest of your app will make up for it :)

Gasquet: You seem to have very good stats. Unfortunately, being an international applicant puts you at a huge disadvantage, especially at public schools. I was told by a professor in my department (at UC Riverside) that the math department accepts maybe 5 international applicants with the intent of enrolling maybe 2. It's brutal! You might want to include a safety school in India or some of the top schools in India. Maybe the University of Bombay? Hopefully you can get into some of your top choices here in the US, though!

My application had a number of aspects that should have floored my application if you believe the opinions of some people on rumour mills like MathematicsGre.com. I'm a white international male and my undergrad institution and referees are completely unknown. I even read once that if you're international you need to get 90% on the GRE to get into good places - total joke! Don't believe the rumours.

Here's the main piece of advice I'd give: once you've finally decided where to apply, download a website blocker like Chrome Nanny and block MathematicsGre.com, TheGradCafe.com, etc., as they only cause unnecessary stress. Once you submit your apps the process is completely beyond your control, so just sit it out. People get really worked up here, then others get worked up, and all for no reason. Stressing 24/7, emailing grad directors, etc., won't increase your chances of getting accepted. Once submitted, put your apps out of your mind. If you get accepted somewhere, you can unblock the sites.

TOEFL Score: (115 = R30/L30/S26/W29)

Program Applying: Pure Math (at the moment interested in functional analysis/operator theory, harmonic analysis and PDE)

Research Experience: A lot, 2 projects at own universities, 4 projects at top European and Australian universities, several directed readings and advanced workshops (mainly in analysis and PDE), honours thesis, etc. 4 papers in regional journals and conferences, mainly unknown. 2 more in preparation.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Several research scholarships, full 4-year academic scholarships, usual Dean's list, etc.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: 1 year of teaching assistant, a few years as Maths private tutor.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: a few advanced undergrad classes in real analysis, algebra, PDE, topology, Fourier analysis, functional analysis (might be equivalent to beginning graduate courses in US), would have completed a few graduate classes by the time of graduation.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Recommenders are my research mentors, got their PhD from top universities in US, but not famous I think.
