I was led to believe that USA math departments don't run interviews.
They do for applied mathematics at Duke. Is this generally the case for applied mathematics departments/programs or is Duke an exception?
USA Math Department Interviews
Re: USA Math Department Interviews
I can't say I have confirmed what I'm saying, but nearly everyone I've talked to who applies to a higher ranked school and was considered has had an interview. Among the list is Havard and Stanford. I would actually think it's pretty common. I have been told by faculty, becoming a PhD student means you have justify spending a large sum of research money for your support as a student.
Re: USA Math Department Interviews
For pure maths programs, none of the US universities to which I applied last year had interviews. (I suppose I can't say this with certainty about the ones where I was rejected).
