Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
I was accepted to princeton (pure math)
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Congrats to everyone who got into Princeton!
I think this wave of Princeton decisions on the gradcafe justifies what I was saying earlier in the thread.

I have also received an acceptence from UCLA. Does anybody heard something from applied math at MIT?
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
I got an acceptance from Carnegie Mellon today in the morning.

L3inad, do you think the CMU started sending out emails??L3inad wrote:I got an acceptance from Carnegie Mellon today in the morning.

Congrats to those who have received admits.
It seems like Applied Math PhD departments will be sending out decisions (much) later than Pure Math PhD departments. I've talked to a few professors in applied math and operations research programs, and they said they've only just barely begun to look at applications, and that decisions probably won't come out until mid-February, at the earliest. So for us Applied Math applicants, it looks like the wait will be a bit longer.

Does this apply to all Applied Math departments?arxndo wrote:Congrats to those who have received admits.

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
@aard: I am pretty sure that they have not sent out all acceptances. I think they have sent out like 3. I know this because I talked to a professor that works there and he said that they accepted two students in December from CMU who were really strong and he said that my application caught his eye and so he talked to the head of the department so they would offer me acceptance already (I am talking about the combinatorics group). He said the other groups barely started reading the applications. The deadline was jan 15th.

Other than RPI, has any applied math program replied?
Are all the Princeton/UCLA admits/rejects on gradcafe pure math?

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
And another weekend

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
If I reject an offer from some school, should I explain why, or should I just say that I reject the offer?

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
@math789: It's really up to you, but you should definitely thank them for the opportunity and the time spent, and perhaps mention that you have other offers from schools that fit you better, or something to that extent.
In general, it's best not to hold on to an offer that you don't plan to accept, as a courtesy to your fellow waitlisted candidates, and the committee who has to recruit applicants to their program.

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
I got an offer from bonn for the masters program without scholarship. Can anyone tell me if there is any chance of getting a scholarship from an external source?
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
rashomon, I assume one would have had to have applied for external funding already in order to receive funding, though I'm not sure. But isn't there very little tuition there? If they allow you to do some TA work I'm guessing it won't be much of a problem financially?
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
yes,but I think bachelor degrees are taught in German. So will there be any TA work for international students?
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
I don't like the weekends one bit.
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Thanks for your answer. Regarding "you have other offers from schools that fit you better"- is it better to tell them which school or not?dexter wrote:@math789: It's really up to you, but you should definitely thank them for the opportunity and the time spent, and perhaps mention that you have other offers from schools that fit you better, or something to that extent.

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
@math789: you say "school", so looks like you may have already decided to accept an offer somewhere. If that's the case, go ahead and tell them where you're going. If not, you could also pull off something like, "I will most likely accept _____'s offer." It's a nice data point for them to have, but no need to give out too many details.

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
UCLA sends rejections, or only acceptances?
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
There are still few items about chicago and MIT in gradcafe.....That is strange
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
At this point in time, it looks like only acceptances. It seems like their pattern is send out a batch of acceptances the last Friday in January with a great offer, then send out a batch of acceptances the next Friday with an equally great offer, then send out a last batch of acceptances the following Friday with an okay offer (no first year fellowship), and then subsequently if you haven't heard yet expect either to be rejected or on the waitlist. :/jimaras190 wrote:UCLA sends rejections, or only acceptances?
Good luck! I'm applying too, and I'm really stressed out! If I don't get accepted, I'm almost certainly leaving California, which I've lived in my entire life. It's a daunting prospect.
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Thanks again. After I emailed them and declined the offer, should I do anything else? (I have'nt found any place on my online application where I can click on "decline" and I am not familiar with the proccess, as I am an international student)dexter wrote:@math789: you say "school", so looks like you may have already decided to accept an offer somewhere. I am tired of seeing only American acceptances and no internetional, in Princeton and UCLA...rmg512 wrote:At this point in time, it looks like only acceptances. This is going crazy! I am even checking emails for acceptance even in the weekend

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
@math789: I'm sure they will let you know if you missed an online decline form. Good luck!

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Hey Gasquet did you apply to the pure or applied math programs in Cornell and Princeton?
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
UCLA doesn't differentiate between pure and applied math in the application & admissions process, right? I'm just confused because people seem to be asking whether the UCLA admits were pure or applied, but it seems to be that there is no distinction...
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
I applied only to applied math programs. CAM for Cornell and PACM for Princeton. So I guess we have quite a few programs in common.marco wrote:Hey Gasquet did you apply to the pure or applied math programs in Cornell and Princeton?
Applied means more time to wait.

@Manyfolds: Some schools(not just UCLA) have just one department and/or common application process for pure and applied math, but in the application there would generally be a field for pure or applied. And the general consensus is that the application review process is separate for most of these schools.

how often is everyone checking their email?

Depends on whether I'm awake.generic_username wrote:how often is everyone checking their email?

If so, about once every ten or fifteen minutes. Otherwise, probably once an hour (in-dream).
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
@Gasquet: How do you know that applied math means more waiting time? Are you looking at grad cafe results from previous years? I bet we also have tons of programs in common...

Interestingly, getting a smartphone did a lot for my sanity in terms of email checking. It will tell me if I get an email. My problem is obsessively reloading gradcafe.
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
All this waiting is really starting to take it's toll on me...anyone heard anything from anyone today?

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
I received an email from professor Van Vu at Yale university saying "I guess you have got our offer by now, so I am writing this letter to encourage you to come to Yale."
Although I havent received any emails from the department I guess I could say I got in?

Lol, thats funny he spilled the beans. Must mean there are emails coming very soon...
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Does anyone have any insight about the Berkeley 80th percentile on Math GRE stipulation?
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
They seem to be pretty strict about that stipulation. UCLA and Michigan (the other public schools in the top 10) appear to be less strict.

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
I received this today from Urbana Champgain: "Just a note to say that I've noticed your strong application, while reading the files this month. You are now through to our second round of review, in which faculty committees examine the files in their areas.(...)"
So that is probably a good sign
