I applied to the AIM program too. Are you applying for pure or applied math? I am an undergraduate student in Michigan. I applied for AIM master for safety and haven't heard back.

Anyone else still waiting on University of Washington and/or Stony Brook? I've gotten into some other decent schools but these were two of my top choices. And they're moving so ridiculously slowly.

a Stony Brook (pure math) hopeful here, still haven't heard anything either. according to GC, last year, they released decisions around the last week of march, so we might hear from them by next week.ajrasmus wrote:Anyone else still waiting on University of Washington and/or Stony Brook? So UMD AMSC told me via email upon my inquiry: "Your application is under review. You should receive a final decision by the second week of April." --> What does this mean?

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
I think the best response to such email is: No shit, Sherlock! Second week of April is the end of the world for the admissions season, its when all schools will have informed all applicants of all decisions and all admitted students will have responded to their schools. I don't see how a school can just bullshit their applicants in this way!!cooltrainer wrote:So UMD AMSC told me via email upon my inquiry: "Your application is under review. Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Also waiting on Pure at Stony Brook. And they're on vacation this week... Hope admissions is still working...

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
I think once I get the final reject from UMD AMSC, I am going to write an email to them criticizing their admission policies. If you have an effective second round in form of the three/four additional questions, you should have the decency to reject the others. What's worse is that for those who don't get those questions(like me), even if you inquire about their status they give vague responses which are meant to give you a glimmer of hope. Do they really expect us to think that we will get the further questions on April 16th?cooltrainer wrote:So UMD AMSC told me via email upon my inquiry: "Your application is under review. @Gasquet: I saw somewhere on gradcafe that in some previous year someone was accepted without being requested for further questions.
The only thing with me is that many schools told me my applications are still "under review" while they already sent out their first-round offers. One school said "under review" does not mean "waitlisted." -->?!!

This is ridiculous, I applied to 7 schools, and have only heard from 2 so far , and they are not even mathematics. I am amazed by how slow they are.
I should start applying to master programs as plan B.

Officially rejected from Stony Brook via E-mail:
"The Admissions Committee has now reviewed your application for the Math PhD Program at Stony Brook. Your application was very qualified and our inability to offer admission reflects the intense competition for the limited number of openings available. You are to be commended for your achievements so far. We encourage you to continue your studies and are confident you will find another graduate program to match your interests and excellent qualifications."

Are you serious? I emailed CMU last week since I hadn't heard from them yet, and just got a response this morning that my application still "doesn't have a final decision". So they're already sending rejections to people who made the waitlist, but I still can't get a solid answer when I'm not on the waitlist? Sorry to hear about your rejection btw .JonMLTR wrote:Just rejected, was in CMU waitlist. Soo I'm out

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
I am visiting a school that has not yet sent out replies (I'd rather avoid the name due to paranoia, neroticism, etc.) I contacted the department about visiting some classes and just checking in. The person encouraged me to contact any professors I might be interested in working with. I'd be happy to speak with some particular ones while I'm there, but I really don't know how to frame this email. It just seems kind of awkward when I haven't gotten in yet. Should I just tell them that my research interests match up with theirs and I'm interested in hearing more about their work? Anyone have advice on this?
Edit: Nvm, found some good stuff about this on the nets. For those interested, http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~evans/advic ... ctive.html

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
How good is Stony Brook's Applied Math program? I would greatly appreciate your information
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
How 'good' really depends on which school(s) you are comparing it with. While nowhere near the best, I would think that it would comfortably be in the top 25 schools for applied math. I consider that to be pretty good, but of course the definition of 'good' varies from person to person.cooltrainer wrote:How good is Stony Brook's Applied Math program? One thing I have gathered form past results is that they have some funding issue. Many(most?) of their admits are unfunded. This has been the situation for at least the last five years(This is based on more than just GC).
Did you get in? Have they started sending out admissions?
Edit: What in applied math are you interested in?

Why are the univeristies are sending me acceptance without funding even though I always clicked the button that I can not attend without funding? One of them did not even offer a tution waiver.

Just heard from Rice CAAM. They said they were gonna check their budget and if financially possible, make me an offer. SO EXCITED, but trying not to get my hopes up just in case budget stuff doesn't work out! AAAHHHHH

yeah, fortunately at least one of them offered me a TA position, it seems like i will take it. another one put me on a waitlist for funding, but i said i won't wait, another one accepted me without any funding and i said no. uic has not offered me anything yet, it seems like they wont accept me anyway and I dont want to wait until april to hear from them, i will accept the one which wants me more not the best one.
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
I was told to wait and that I was still being considered for funding. So I emailed again that I need more clarification whether there would at least be tuition waivor if not TA. It costs over 50000 to go to that school. I don't see how anyone can expect students to have that kind of money.MathFreaked wrote:Well I just got accepted to RPI today, but no word on funding either. Same here! I was pretty confused by that. Why would I go visit a school when I don't know if I can even afford to go there?

So, it seems Stony Brook AMS has send out their first wave(but unofficially). By their history, I doubt anyone who has not heard back will get a funded admit. So much for that. Sigh. Life goes on.

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Rejected from UMass. A little surprised since one of my recommenders had some connections and told me that I should have no trouble getting in. It wasn't one of my top choices, but it would have been nice to have an option. Oh well.
