Perhaps they hate rejecting people so much that they've outsourced it to China/India? It does seem like a very strange time. Sorry to hear you didn't get in .Gasquet wrote:Finally got that UCLA reject. I'm the poster on GC. What is with the UC schools tradition of emailing at 2:55am local time?

Still no decision from Michigan State.
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
I'd imagine they just put it into their computer system and they all get sent out in one big wave.Gasquet wrote:Finally got that UCLA reject. I'm the poster on GC. What is with the UC schools tradition of emailing at 2:55am local time?
Anyone else has not heard anything from Stony Brook AMS till now? They don't even reply to emails.
I haven't heard anything from Toronto since they told me I was under serious consideration a week or two ago. I still see the odd rejection popping up on thegradcafe, which I guess means there's still a chance. I imagine once everything gets sorted out with NSERC winners I'll get a concrete answer.
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Finally received my rejection from Ohio State University's MMS program (the only program I applied to ). Well, I will apply again next year to more than one place and hopefully get an admission. I will add my profile a little later.

It seems almost horrifying(? not sure if this is the best word choice) that many of us are going to be choosing our fates for the next 3-6 years within the next week. It just doesn't seem like enough time to give someone to make such a huge decision.marco wrote:I have still not heard from four schools, today is April 8. Come on schools!
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Yeah, it really is a bad situation to be living. I just hope it will all be over soon. Good luck guys!
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Who else here is still waiting for Purdue? I really hope I at least get a decision by Friday. If I get in, I want at least the weekend to decide between OSU and Purdue...

It would be great if the CGS were to adopt some sort of stable matching algorithm instead of the mess we have now (where it seems that 90% of the decisions are made on april 15). Would probably require applicants to rank their preferences before submitting application.
Imagine a fully centralized, transparent process where you could view your ranking at each school in real-time.

Look at OSU's website. Mine finally rejected me. They are the worst on the customer service front.

I wish this were possible! I feel like you might have a hard time convincing a lot of universities to agree to something like this though, and I'm sure it would also have its own host of issues.dollar wrote:Imagine a fully centralized, transparent process where you could view your ranking at each school in real-time.

I'm unfamiliar with this process and too lazy to google it at the present moment. Care to summarize?qbranch wrote: I've been telling anyone who will listen that I wish they did it like they do residencies in the medical field.
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
The way I understand it, you do some sort of application process (I think it involves interview. at a bunch of different hospitals), but then each hospital ranks their choices for residents and each applicant ranks their choices for hospitals and they all go into a big pool and they perform a matching algorithm and assign everyone a hospital, and that's just where you go.MathFreaked wrote:I'm unfamiliar with this process and too lazy to google it at the present moment. Still to hear from 5 schools. Feels like the remaining schools are toying with me
New rejects up on GC for NYU and UIC, and I still haven't heard from any of them.

Applied to 10 USA schools and only got into one. This is brutal! Anyone else has this experience? Funny thing is that the one I got wasn't one of my safeties.
97% GRE Math by the way. So much for that.
Technically haven't heard back from 2 but this late in the game its probably not going to work out.

Did anyone else get rejected twice by Cornell? I got the first e-mail from them on 2/20 like most people, but they sent me another copy of the exact same rejection e-mail this morning. I did not contact them after the first rejection or anything. I guess they really disliked my application .
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
@Someone_else I saw another similar case in GC,(maybe they rejected twice just to be sure)
unless it was you who posted it.

Depending from where you are, there could be quotas per country. I would think students from countries with big student populations such as China and India face stronger competition than others.Legendre wrote:Applied to 10 USA schools and only got into one. I am not from China and India, but I am from an Asian country. I think even at private schools like the Ivy League, they take in way more Americans than internationals.IIes wrote: Depending from where you are, there could be quotas per country. Hang in there Man. I believe you will have good future no matter where you go to the graduate school
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
I spoke to the director of grad admissions at one of the Ivy League department on visit day. He said my profile might not be that hot with math departments because I did "very applied" stuff like Computer Science and Engineering etc (my undergrad and masters were in applied areas instead of just math) instead of having a traditional American math major background.kuz wrote:Was there something seriously wrong with your statement of purpose or letters of recommendation? Thanks man. But I already accepted an offer from Ivy League school.dangxing wrote:Hang in there Man. I believe you will have good future no matter where you go to the graduate school
That was the only one I got. I actually got rejected from all my lower ranked "safety" schools.

That sounds very likely. At the Ivies, most people have a ton of pure maths experience.Legendre wrote:I spoke to the director of grad admissions at one of the Ivy League department on visit day. I don't think the international bit is so relevant; 6 out of the 10 in my year at Princeton are international, and more than half of the people offered this year were international students.
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Aye. I think the biggest strike against me is the relative lack of pure maths experience compared to other applicants. This is true even for applied mathematics programs (the pure math does help a lot in applied math research).kuz wrote: That sounds very likely. Maybe I am just unlucky that the schools I applied to take in almost all Americans this year. E.g. I heard Duke invited 16 Americans to their open house, and Dartmouth had just 1 international student.

Finally got that Purdue reject. Thanks for the moral support, guys.
I've officially accepted OSU's offer.

When is everyone going to give up on waiting for that last school and submit their response form?

I'm just about at that point. The longer it takes, the more appreciative I am of my acceptances for giving me the benefit of the doubt early on. Maybe I'll wait one more day or so, but not much longer.qbranch wrote:When is everyone going to give up on waiting for that last school and submit their response form?
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
That's where I am too. I know it's not binding until the 15th, but I don't want to switch my decision. The "buddy" that one of my schools paired me with said he got offered at another school on the 13th and his friend got an offer on the 15th. I doubt that I am that high on the waiting list though.DiscreteGuy wrote:I'm just about at that point. Finally rejected by Maryland AMSC. They sure took their time. Two whole months since the additional questions went out. Had not even received the additional questions, yet they insisted that my application was still under review a week ago.
