For those who are waiting to hear from Austin:

I just got reply that they will announce their wait lists and rejects within the next three weeks (which sound a lot to me I really hope they make it sooner)

Thanks very much for the info. It gives me a glimmer of hope. But I guess, this does mean that UT Austin has made it's wave of offers in it's entirety (I still had hope that they were going to make a second wave at some point in time).

I'm still waiting for any responses at all.

Does anyone know anything about these schools:
1) MIT (already pretty sure I won't get accepted)
2) UC San Diego
3) University of Washington
4) UC Santa Barbara

I've seen (either from grad cafe or this forum) that at least a couple people have heard responses back from all of these. Does anyone have any idea if they've already sent out their first wave of admissions or if the early responses were mostly just exceptional cases or what?

I'd greatly appreciate the help.

I still haven't received anything either, it is very disconcerting. Overall, I have had very bad days and I'm constantly thinking negatively about my apps in all of the ten schools I applied to. On the other hand, the only school out of the possible ten that has made it's move is UT Austin ( apart from a couple of admits by Rutgers and Duke which I am assuming are premature), and judging from past information on grad cafe it seems we're still a couple of days away from the heavy decision season. So I think it is safe to say that I shouldn't be worrying at this point; but I am. That being said, if I don't get accepted anywhere I would be truly heartbroken and I think this is the reason why I'm so nervous, anxious and scared. Sorry to spam the thread with this post, I guess Im just trying to blow off some steam.

No worries Marco, you are certainly not alone. I am feeling very similarly... receiving an early rejection and then watching everyone else get accepted has been very difficult. I wish I had never seen/heard anything about GradCafe! That being said, just stay positive and take out your pent-up frustration on whatever assignment/work/etc. you have currently.

Try to reverse your thought-process a little: it's not your loss that a school may turn you down; it's theirs! Stay positive! :)

I hear you... A lot of my application due dates were fairly late (between January 1 and February 1). But it's still hard waiting totally in limbo. I also didn't really think about a plan b.

To me, the most frustrating thing is that I really have no conception of reaches, safeties, or anything in the middle. its all a blah and I don't really feel like i can compare myself to anyone else via all the stats we talk about--the best information to compare myself to admitted/rejected students is scores, but that doesn't seem like it will matter as much as academic record, letters of rec, accomplishments, and statement of purpose. It would be nice if some veteran adcom person just told me, "here you'll probably get in, here is a coin flip, and here is a longshot." In fact, it would be nice for this hypothetical just to let me know I'll probably get in somewhere.

ajrasmus: It's definitely hard knowing that potentially life changing news is on the way. I guess we can only hope for the best.
rmg512: It is very comforting to know that i'm not alone in this.

@marco: As rmg512 said, the point of this thread is for people like us who are losing it waiting to hear back. The only consolation is knowing that there are others in the same boat.

2 admits from Washington Seattle Applied and an admit from SUNY Stony Brook AMS on gradcafe. First replies from the programs I have applied to. Time to start worrying.

Washington deadline was Feb 1st, but on the application, it says "The program to which you applied expects to make their admissions decisions by early February." According to gradcafe, UW has always replied in the first week of Feb.

Hi guys. Usually, how often do universities use postal mail instead of an e-mail to communicate the admission results? Or is this a common practise at all? I'm an international applicant to pure math programs, and kind of wondering why I haven't received any replies from some schools that have already rejected and accepted students to their programs. Maybe I'm in the waitlist, or just waiting for an envelope to arrive? What do you guys think.

@marco, like the other guys said, the only consolation any of us can find during this period is to know they are not alone and this thread is the only way for that to happen, I dont know anyone else in my school or in my country who are applying to math phd, so you guys are all I have got in this journey :) , and u should know u r far away from being alone, i would just add to what the other guys said that I wake up in the middle of the night freaked out to go check my inbox and thegradcafe, and also i believe its still too early to give up hope, the process is tooo tedious: first round of offers, second round of offers, waitlists, multiple rejection rounds, waiting for other students to make up their minds about schools u r waitlisted in and so on, so i'd just say sit tight and good luck to us all :)

Thomas:
It really depends on where you have applied to. For instance, Harvard and Chicago normally have the habit of only using postal mail if you are rejected. They send you a rejection letter (which you probably receive 1 month later because you are international) and that's it. But lots of other universities contact students by email even if they are rejected. So, if you are talking about a specific institution you should look what it did in the last years to know what method of delivery you should expect from it.

Two more UW applied admits on GC. It seems that they have sent out the first wave :(

The Stony Brook AMS is still a single entry, which seems weird as it says the email was sent 4 days ago. Hopefully it is unofficial.

No news from Northwestern for me. I emailed Columbia about my status and got this response:

"Your application is still under review. We expect that the faculty committee on admissions will return Ph.D. decisions sometime near the end of February. You will be notified via email when a decision has been reached."

PNT wrote:I also haven't heard anything back from Brown, what do we think the 2 acceptances mean at this stage?
I have a hypothesis:

These two acceptances were received informally via a potential advisor. The admissions committee has met and decided on some or all applicants, but will not be sending out formal notifications until the 2nd half of the week. This would fall in line with the time of year they admitted students last year. (Though shifted a few days, because they started their Spring semester later this year by 5 days, because 7===5 mod -366 (leap year).

2. University of Maryland at College Park (FA13, PhD in Applied Mathematics)
3. University of Washington (FA13, PhD Applied Mathematics)
4. University of Notre Dame (FA13, PhD in Applied Mathematics)

8. University of California at Irvine (FA13, PhD in (Applied) Mathematics)
9. Arizona State University (FA13, PhD in Applied Mathematics)

Particularly, when and how do they (usually) send out their decisions? Your information is very much appreciated. Best of luck to all of you!

UW applied has already sent the first wave yesterday. Hopefully it is not the entire first wave and they send more this week.

Maryland AMSC sends a request for more information(4 questions, they do this every year) in the first week of Feb and gives admits in the 3rd/4th week of Feb.

Stony Brook AMS usually sends it in the second half of March, but there is already one admit on GC, which I'm assuming(hoping) is an informal one.

Cornell CAM is generally in early-mid March. Very less chance for international applicants.

No idea about the rest, as I have not applied there. You could check out gradcafe.

For any one who applied to the University of British Columbia (Pure Math) I emailed admissions and received a reply from the Graduate Program Director saying:

"We will be making offers the week of Feb 18th."

I noticed last week on thegradcafe that there were a couple of admissions to UBC, and with one of them saying they were the final person to be admitted to the program. But given the information above it was obviously a hoax and they have been removed. Real nice...

Thanks for sharing that Langlands - I was fairly certain that the first post was a hoax (it seemed to be worded in such a way as to cause maximum panic in other applicants) , but started worrying after the 2nd ubc admit was posted.

hi guys it'd be better if you also indicate what program you are referring to. just mentioning the school when you share news about admissions etc might cause panic to other applicants lol. i went to the gradcafe math forum and was surprised that many admission offers have already been made. it took me a while before i read someone mentioning that it's for the biostat program, whew!

Hey guys, so I was consulting the holy scriptures and it seems very likely that today will be the day that many of us will be accepted to schools. There were numerous references to acceptance, such as...
Lo, have you not been accepted...?
Check your inbox. Yea verily, check it, for the time of acceptance is at hand.
It is more impossible for you to not be accepted today (Feb 6) than for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle.
And (he) let open the gates of acceptance, for whomsoever should believe in him (that is, acceptance) will be granted eternal life (i.e. acceptance)
There are many more, and you certainly consult the scriptures yourself if you want more examples. That being said, best of luck that you get accepted to your favorite school.

There is an NYU applied admit too on GC.

That makes it 4 universities that I have applied that have replied back(for applied math) but I haven't heard back from any

I also received a call from Courant today notifying me that I got in! He said the official letter will come in the mail, but didn't mention funding at all. I know Courant admits people without funding, so I guess I'll wait for the official letter.
