There is a lone Cornell applied admit on GC. If that person is here, please let us know if it is formal or informal.

Just got into University of Southern California, Pure Math. Have posted on Gradcafe.

Can somebody tell me whether the following TA-ship is good for Los Angeles:

$20500 for 9 months, and extra $2500 if I stay for one month extra in summer : this is for the first year.

$23000 for 9 months, and extra $2500 if I stay for one month extra in summer : this is for each of the remaining 4 years.

Is this good?

Well first of congrats.

I had a friend who was in Usc (in ee) and also met another one from math department.

Unfortunately "is it good for LA" is not a good question for sc because not every part of LA is the same. Unfortunately SC is probably in one of the worst neighbourhoods in the country, dirty, full of fast food chains, straight roads which form a simple grid, it is a ghetto like environment. I think CVS , five guys, Chipolte grill, starbucks were the luxurious shops! in the area. It is not safe to walk at night and there is nothing to see day time. So if you like to read a journal outside while drinking your coffee, or take walks to ease your mind, you won't find it there.
This was not only my opinion but was most of my friends' opinion as well.

As for the money, if you are ok with staying in the neighbourhood of USC then you won't need a car and the money should be more than enough. if you don't want to share a room I think you can find a decent place for around 1000 (-+250) (my friends were staying in the dorm but it was hard to find one, they were paying like 800, and the surrounding safe places seemed to be run by some small private firms and expensive)and the rest is enough for your needs. If you want to live in a nice environment unfortunately you have to get a car and live far away from the campus, which would be impossible with that money.

I don't know how good their department is but that place seemed like a place for undergraduates with money to have party and fun. For a person who wants to put his mind on research and has little time left to relax it seemed like a bad place to be in.

Sorry for being blunt in answering your question, I just believe I should say the things straight because my friend and some others had a big disappointment when they arrived on the campus and regretted their decision.

If it was UCSD, UCSB or UCLA I would say they are really nice places (especially SD) to make research and live in.

That's a pretty good offer, Eowyn. None of the other schools in southern California give offers that good, with the possible exception of UCLA, as far as I know. Speaking as a native Southern Californian with lots of high school classmates going to USC, unless you live in the actual on-campus housing, I don't recommend living in the area around campus: it's pretty scary sometimes, I hear. Some of the nearby suburbs like Downey and Whittier aren't so bad, so maybe you can find a place to live out there. But you'll have to commute.

I second Jon MLTR's post.

hi Manyfolds, why did you delete your reply? Congrats btw! I'm still waiting for a response from Cornell CAM. Read on their website that admissions is pretty competitive and they only admit about 5 students per year. This was not what I read when I first intended to apply for Cornell CAM as the website was outdated. At that time they mentioned an acceptance rate of about 15% which is rather high...

Hey Manyfolds: Thanks for your answer. I was beginning to get worried because I applied to the PhD program in Mathematics but my interests are applied and I say so explicitly in my SOP. Then I saw an admit for "Applied Math" made by Duke at GC and thought that maybe there is a separate PhD program for Applied Mathematics and that I applied for the incorrect program.
So basically all prospective students apply to the same PhD program in Mathematics at Duke and then Duke accepts some pure math students and some applied math students. Kind of like UT Austin no?

This according to a professor at UCLA in an email (to my advisor) from Feb. 1:

"It seems that for domestic applicants the decisions have already been made and admissions have been sent out."

However, I suspect that the professor was not directly involved with the initial stages of admission, but noticed that some decisions had been made, and assumed that the rest had as well. This suspicion is based on the fact that UCLA admits about 50 domestic students per year (give or take) and it does not appear that nearly as many have yet received a favorable decision.

The professor could, of course, be correct, which would certainly be disappointing. If previous years are any indication, though, it would seem we have reason yet to hold out hope.

Very! We typically receive about 200 applications a year for about 5-6 slots.

May I know if they mentioned anything about funding? If so, how much did they offer you?

6/200. Wow. Had I know this, I certainly wouldn't have applied here. Acceptance rate gone from 15% to 3%. 3 admits on GC + Manyfolds. They must have send out all their admits. Another one bites the dust.

Do you reckon that Cornell CAM is more difficult to get into Brown DAM? What's your top choice btw?

Also there was a guy here who said that Cornell CAM admits would be sent out by mid March and that internationals have it harder. Guess what, both of these are false as assuming that the posts on grad cafe are accurate, 2 internationals have been admitted so far...

In light of these new figures, I think it could be possible that Cornell CAM is tougher to get into than Brown DAM. I have not seen the stats for Brown, so can't be sure. but I doubt it would be lesser than 3%.

My top choice is Princeton PACM. Although at this point, I'd gladly take any admit.

Sorry about the Cornell CAM info. I must have got it mixed up with another place I applied. Till now, I was right about the other schools(even in my other posts) :P .

According to my applications(personal statements), I am interested in PDEs and computation(including but not limited to CFD) and of course, computational PDE.

What I am actually interested in includes a lot more areas such as Differential Topology, Mathematical Physics(mainly topological) and Operations Research.

You?

Yeah I'm broadly (at least as of now) into the intersection of analysis and geometry/ topology (so largely, PDE) and also Probability. My interests fluctuate though, so I'm looking for a broad department with lots of activity in these areas. So I guess you may know: how "pure" can you get in Princeton's PACM, Columbia's APAM, and Cornell's CAM?

Hi Eowyn.

Quick question: does your offer include anything like health insurance or any other extras? I got an offer from UC Santa Barbara and they offered me $17,655 for 9 months plus a $2540 health insurance plan. I know Santa Barbara is an expensive place and I'm wondering how reasonable this offer is.

From what I understand, the applied math department is never completely independent of the math department. You can always have a co-advisor(not sure what they call it in the US) from the pure side. The problem with PDE particularly is that some schools classify it in pure math(applied analysis, I guess) and some in applied. In each of the three places you mentioned, there probably would be students in theoretical PDEs but my guess is that it would be in a very 'applied' sense(aiming at a particular physical problem or say SPDE) and not in a more 'pure' sense(something like Hyperbolic Conservation Laws or homogenization). Hope this helps.

Take this with a grain a salt. Since my interest(at least according to my applications) is in computation and computational PDE too, I didn't have to think about pure vs applied department. I have also procrastinated finding out too many details to (if and) after I get in somewhere.

I did. But it so happened that two of my choices, namely Carnegie Mellon and Brown DAM are located in great cities with a strong record in applied math. Cornell CAM on the other hand is also a great program but I don't know what to make of Ithaca. On the opposite end of the spectrum, my application to Columbia APAM was spurred by NYC and not so much by the program itself. There are only a few guys in APAM who work on PDEs and based on what I surmised, it's more applied than any applied math program. These are the only schools I applied for the Ph.D. program, the remaining are MS programs which I considered a back up plan.

Carnegie Mellon was somewhat a last minute decision as I hadn't browsed their website before and was surprised to see a lot of people working on applied analysis. You can't discount its strength in probability too. The upside was they don't charge you an application fee.

I thought of applying to Princeton PACM but after browsing through the courses available, they weren't as specialized as that of CMU, Cornell CAM, and Brown DAM. Also only a few guys are working on SDEs...And I thought it would be difficult to get in given that it's Princeton and how acclaimed its Math department is.

NYU on the other hand was a dream school as it was located in NYC plus the department's strong. They did not seem to be generous with funding, especially for internationals, as what I was led to believe on their website so I applied to Columbia APAM instead...
