Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Does anybody know when schools like Michigan or Cornell will make decisions with regards to pure math? I realize this is all speculative, of course.
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
I got into Courant, didn't specify Pure vs Applied as far as I remember on the application. (I did not post on gradcafe)
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Thanks for replying. I had seen that last year they sent offers at early March and I was hoping that the offers made now were for Oceanic + Atmospheric. I guess they replied earlier this year..

I also posted on grad cafe my admission to Courant for Ocean-Atmosphere (but did not specify that it was COAS when I posted).

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
I was accepted for NYU this morning (New York time); my application was in pure mathematics.
(I'm an international student, if that counts for anything.)

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Just got a rejection from Brown in response to a scores inquiry:
We received your scores, however, I am sorry to report that your application has been rejected. I am sure that you will be admitted to a good program elsewhere. Best of luck in your future studies.
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Wow I have not gotten anything from NYU. I really thought I had a good chance there...Im starting to get worried (sad) again.
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
My condolences atomspatz. Hope you will have an admission from a top program coming soon. I want to ask you if you, on the way, asked about your application status. Also, was your application for pure math?atomspatz wrote:Just got a rejection from Brown in response to a scores inquiry:

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Confusion!!!!
My application to Penn State was declined as they needed a 4-years Bachelor degree, and I have a 3-years. And that rejection I got on 15th Jan. But just now I have got a mail from Prof. G Andrews that they have nominated me for UGF, and he is very 'excited' to know whether I like to consider the offer and come to PSU. I just don't understand!!!!!

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Thanks IIes, I'm not too disappointed about this one. My application was for pure. I didn't ask about my decision; the website reflected that they hadn't received my GRE scores, so I asked if they wanted me to resend them.IIes wrote:My condolences atomspatz. Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
I don't understand why grad schools like Brown keep you waiting long after they know your decision status. It's really annoying because the longer you hope, the worse the rejection feels.

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Those schools don't tell you until they have filled up their class. They don't want to underfill their entering class because that would mean less funding the next year. Overall, though, I would call today a relatively calm admit day.
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
It was relatively calm indeed. Except for the part where my dream school (NYU) sent some admits and I did not get one. That sucks.waiting512 wrote:Those schools don't tell you until they have filled up their class. They don't want to underfill their entering class because that would mean less funding the next year. Still hoping for the best though. It aint over till its over man! BTW I think this Friday is going to be pretty hectic! Don't you think?
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Yeah, but these people had already been basically rejected, yet the admissions committee did not inform them. I would understand if the admissions committee thought they probably weren't going to accept you but thought your application was decent enough to hold on to just in case they needed to fill in spots. However, this was not the case here.waiting512 wrote:Those schools don't tell you until they have filled up their class. Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
I was also really hoping for NYU although it was a long shot with my terrible GRE score. Cornell should send out admittance notifications this week so that should be exciting.marco wrote:It was relatively calm indeed. Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
@virgo: well I think there is still some hope left. I think NYU tends to make some offers without funding so if you have financial support from elsewhere this could be an option. Good luck with Cornell did you apply to applied math or pure?
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
I was under the impression that they haven't even sent out formal acceptances yet.virgo wrote:Yeah, but these people had already been basically rejected, yet the admissions committee did not inform them. Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Has anyone heard from Columbia so far? There seem to be have been a fair number of intermittently-added admits on gradcafe but they don't really follow a pattern.
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Just received an email from a professor in Brown saying I got in!

I just received an email from a professor in Brown saying I got in and I got lower than a 152 in verbal.rashomon wrote:Did you ever know that Brown has a cut-off in GRE general? They have cut-off 152 in verbal, and I got 150. And that's why they have declined my application!!!!! I have never seen this restriction in their website. This is really a disappointment!!!!

Good to know about Madison; I must be on the wait-list since I am neither accepted nor rejected. I may just withdraw my application now since I am 100% sure I won't go there.torelli wrote:I emailed Yale, Penn, and Madison, and was told that they won't make any more moves before their first-round admits decline their offers.
If anyone is not seriously considering any of those schools, do let them know so that they can make more offers to people who are still waiting.

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
I got an acceptance from Courant yesterday. It came as a very pleasant surprise as I was almost sure I won't make it . The funding details will follow in a couple of days. All I know is that I'm going to be funded through the Henry M. Mccracken fellowship. My interests are primarily in probability, and I applied in pure math.

do you have any idea if they refund the application fee if you withdraw your application? I know most of the schools say that the application fee is nonrefundable but I was just curious.

Hi torelli. By Penn do you mean Penn State U or UPenn?I emailed Yale, Penn, and Madison (all for pure math), and was told that they won't make any more moves before their first-round admits decline their offers.

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Oh...can anyone give opinion whether most(?) grad schools admit domestic and internatonal students at the same time? Is it fine to assume some departments first invite domestic applicants for open house and make decisions afterwards with the admission for internationals later on? I appreciate your tolerance for a newbie poster.torelli wrote:Iles: I meant UPenn.

tell me about it.... the day (US time) hasn't even started yet for the schools i applied to and i am already checking my emailsananelan wrote:tired of checking e-mails and websites for every 15 minutes...
@Iles: for many schools i applied to, they released decisions for both domestic and international students around the same time (Ohio, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Texas Austin), i am not sure about other schools though..
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
I was feeling that too but was not certain. That will support the guess that many of the schools that have already given out offers(as seen in gradcafe) have already made their, sort of, first round of offers.math_applicant wrote:@Iles: for many schools i applied to, they released decisions for both domestic and international students around the same time (Ohio, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Texas Austin), i am not sure about other schools though.

Rejected by Brown (pure). I emailed the Director of Graduate studies after seeing the messages on gradcafe. I didn't feel like stringing out the wait...

Is it considered in poor taste to email the Director of Graduate studies at a program to ask for an update on the status of one's application?Langlands wrote:Rejected by Brown (pure). Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
Unless the deadline for the application had only just passed I don't think its in poor taste. I've done it for a few programs (just asking if they had made a decision and if not, when they expect to) and have received brief responses - which is fine since I'm sure they receives lots of similar emails - of which all of them answered my questions and none said I shouldn't have emailed them.is2718 wrote:Is it considered in poor taste to email the Director of Graduate studies at a program to ask for an update on the status of one's application?Langlands wrote:Rejected by Brown (pure). Any information on when UCLA will start sending acceptance for international students?
Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
For people in the know: are the Brown(Pure) acceptances on Gradcafe beacuse of offers sent out by Brown or did applicants ask about their status?
From what I observed on gradcafe, when an applicant asks about status within 1 or 2 days of seeing posts on GC, unless they are rejected, they are not notified of their status. But instead are given explanations such as "decisions have been made and offers will be sent out soon", "first round of offers have already been made", etc...keeping one on tenterhooks. Right?

Re: Fall 2013 Application Sweat Thread
I sent out 28 unofficial email offers for Brown Math PhD Fall 2013 last night (Feb. 11) . An additional 15 are still in consideration, a few of which may be admitted in one or two weeks. The remainder of applications (296 minus 43) will be rejected but I have not contacted them yet. However, I have replied to anyone who sent me an email asking about the status of their application.
