E-mailing grad students to know about professors

Post by mathfreak » Wed Mar 27, 2013 7:56 am

Hello,

Some people have warned about bad advisors told me that I should e-mail grad students to inquire about good and bad advisors. Is this considered a good practice? How do I know whether an advisor is good or bad?

Not sure grad students would be willing to bad mouth their advisors or other faculty in the department over email... this is the kind of thing that you'd pick up from visits. If you are interested in a particular advisor, ask his graduate students about their experience working with him. That's the best you can do I think (over email, that is).

From my experience talking to PhD students who has asked their current supervisor's students prior to their PhD: no one will bad mouth their supervisors so its pretty pointless.
