Re: 2014 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results
Undergrad Institution: Small Liberal Arts
Major(s): Math, German
Minor(s):
GPA: 3.9
Type of Student: DWF
GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 760 (78%) hahaha
V: 730 (98%)
W: 5.0 (93%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 690 (59%)
Program Applying: Pure Math
Research Experience: None...
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Some scholarships, honor societies
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Private Tutor, College TA, Secondary Teacher, Adjunct Mathematics Professor
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: After my undergraduate degree, I completed my Master of Arts in secondary education and taught high school for two years. I am currently teaching as an adjunct professor at my local university (not a community college) teaching Applied Calculus and College Algebra.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I am very concerned about my lack of research. I'm hoping that my untraditional background (MAT and high school and college teaching experience) will maybe be intriguing and worth taking a chance on. I've taken a few advanced math classes on the side in the last few years and I just took the Math GRE this fall--I'm hoping this will mitigate my break and show that I can still perform mathematically. I think I have relatively strong LOR as well. But who even knows...
Reaches:
Cornell - Rejected via email 2/20
Brown - Rejected via email 1/28
Target (I hope...):
University of Minnesota
University of Illinois Urbana Champaign - Admitted to Masters with full funding and TAship and PhD transfer with adequate progress
Safer:
Iowa State University - Admitted via website 3/5
Dartmouth - Rejected via email 2/10. Definitely bummed about this.

Re: 2014 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results
Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum. I was perusing all of the stats and am a bit amazed. I guess I had preconceived notions that are definitely false. For example, I'm still perplexed by some people who have low to middling quant scores on the regular GRE, but amazingly high subject test scores. I've heard anything above 70% on the math test is really good, and anything above 80% will get you a shot at the top 10 grad programs in math. It's really odd to see the dichotomy of some of the scores. Well, at least it's reassuring to see how people are faring.

For US Nationals/ Green card holders, any thing above 80% is fine for top Univs. For example MIT, they dont bother much about your application if its less than 80% or 800. At the same time, any thing more than that doesnt add weight to your application. Your depth and breadth of Math knowledge matters. Unless like at OSU where they need a score >= 95% for international students to get an admit.
But due to problems in China, as most of the students are familiar with atleast 50% of questions before the exam, their scores usually more than 90%. Even schools like Northeastern, UMass the chinese students GRE scores are like 97%, 95%. Due to this, people are not giving more weight to GRE scores. And ofcourse not to say no one bothers about your general GRE score, unless it is in 70%.

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Departmental Honors.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs:Tutor all the core courses for one year at my school, grader for multi calc, complex analysis and algebra for two years.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: knew my recommenders well (as is usually the case in LACs). They are all great mathematicians and graduated from top programs (too top for me to apply to though)
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter:I worked hard on my PS? Since it's the only part of my application that I have control of, I made sure I did my best on it. You never know whether it helps or not. At least a good one doesn't hurt. I also have two grad classes, but everyone else has more... Stated my interest in algebraic topology.
Applying to Where:
Stanford- Rejected
Yale- Rejected
Uchicago- Rejected
Brown- Admitted--Visited in mid-March. Very friendly department, great camaraderie among the students, young and smiling secretaries, brilliant people work in all major areas of mathematics. Providence is a beautiful town to live in. It's also very close to other major East coast universities. Will likely attend.
UT Austin- Admitted Declined.
Northwestern- Admitted Declined.
U Michigan- Admitted Declined.
UPenn- Admitted--Visited in mid-march. Great department for algebra and analysis--it's located in the same building with physics department and astronomy. Professors are nice and easy to talk to. Philly is a nice city with convenient transportation. However I didn't feel personally connected to the place. Declined.
Wisconsin- Admitted--Visited in early march. Great department for algebraic geometers and analysts, but they don't have many topologists or people in other branches. The lounge is located on the 9th floor of the building, very spacious and beautifully decorated. It also has a nice view of the whole town. Madison is a comfortable and cheap place to live in. Students are friendly. But be warned that this is a big department, so you might have to fight for popular advisors. Declined.
U Washington Admitted--Visited in mid-march. Strong department in probability, analysis and algebraic topology. Professors are very chill. The department is in the same building with the English and Spanish department (in case anyone is interested...). Because of its proximity to tech companies, many people get industry jobs after graduation. Fewer people go into academia, but is not impossible. Seattle is doubtlessly a great place to live in, very comfy. I really like it, but east coast is more homey to me after four years of college. Declined.
Cornell- Waitlisted--Withdrawn
Johns Hopkins--Withdrew Application.
This forum gave me a lot of comfort in my dark days. I'd like to post my results here to help the future applicants.

Undergrad Institution: Foreign (European). Pretty strong math department.
Major(s): Pure math
Type of Student: International white male.
GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170 (98%)
V: 165 (95%)
W: 4.5 (78%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 790 (79%) (I don't believe this is representative of my knowledge, but I had a bad day and had been too arrogant to plan for it. I should have allowed time for a second test.)
TOEFL Score: (113 = R30/L30/S24/W29)
Program Applying: Pure math

Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Have done extensive grad coursework with near perfect grades and attended a few seminars and conferences (as an attendee only). I believe my letters of recommendations were strong (though I waived my right to see them) and the professors who wrote them are well-known and/or have collaborated with professors at the institutions I'm applying to.
Applying to Where: (all applications are for pure mathematics)

Undergrad Institution: Large US Public
Major(s): Mathematics (BS)
Minor(s): Computer Science
GPA: 3.3 overall, 3.5 math
Type of Student: Domestic
GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 168 (96%)
V: 162 (89%)
W: 5.0 (93%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 800 (81%)
Program Applying: Pure math, interested primarily in number theory & algebraic geometry.
Research Experience: REU at home institution, research in differential geometry, and currently researching in number theory.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: 3rd place in dept math competition?
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Calc TA for 2 years, Linear Algebra "supplemental instruction leader" (read: TA) for 1 year, currently TA for intro to proofs class.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Finishing up 2nd year of home institution's graduate curriculum. Great cuddler.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Two presumably strong letters of recommendation from profs i've known for years, one from someone who I don't know too well, but should be fine.
Applying to Where: (Color use here is welcome)
UCLA - Rejected (Early March, email)
UChicago - Rejected (Early Feb, email)
UGA - Admitted (Feb 14, pony express, funding offer received Mid March, Will attend)
UMass Amherst - Withdrawn
UConn - Withdrawn
UPenn - Withdrawn
UMD - Rejected (Mid Feb, email)
BU - Rejected (Early April, email with pointless encrypted pdf)
I was definitely expecting to get into more schools. I guess my shaky junior year did not make me shine. (I took the first year's graduate curriculum along with a number of undergrad classes which, when coupled with the three part-time jobs I had at the time reaked havoc on my mental wellbeing and academic standing.) That said, UGA seems like a great department and I'm really excited to go there next year.

Re: 2014 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results
This almost makes me think that there is rampant GRE cheating going on in China, which wouldn't be that surprising. Is that true? But due to problems in China, as most of the students are familiar with atleast 50% of questions before the exam, their scores usually more than 90%. Even schools like Northeastern, UMass the chinese students GRE scores are like 97%, 95%. Due to this, people are not giving more weight to GRE scores. And ofcourse not to say no one bothers about your general GRE score, unless it is in 70%.

Out of curiosity, why did you decline UMD?chrisg89 wrote:

Re: 2014 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results
Maryland kind of fits into the same mold as Illinois for me - big public school with large and comprehensive math department, except Illinois has a stronger logic group, which is a potential research area for me. I also grew up close to College Park and was never a fan of the town, so as soon as I was accepted to Illinois, I knew I wasn't going to choose Maryland and didn't want to waste time letting them know.vashts85 wrote:Out of curiosity, why did you decline UMD?chrisg89 wrote:

Re: 2014 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results
Gotcha, that makes a lot of sense. I wonder if I'm posting to the wrong board given that I'm applying for STAT and a lot of the stuff I see posted here is about Math programs. Do you know anything about UMD's statistics program?chrisg89 wrote:Maryland kind of fits into the same mold as Illinois for me - big public school with large and comprehensive math department, except Illinois has a stronger logic group, which is a potential research area for me. I can't say I know much about anyone's statistics program, I've really been focusing on pure math in my search. Based on the little personal information I've gathered, I think Maryland's applied math program is pretty strong, and the rankings seem to back that up. You will probably learn just as much from perusing their website as you would from me though.
Re: 2014 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results
Haha, and unfortunately I will learn nothing! Their websites are so terrible.chrisg89 wrote:

Re: 2014 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results
Has anyone heard from University of Tennessee, Knoxville regarding funding yet? It seems they offered a lot of people admission without funding with funding decisions to follow in mid-March. I was one of them, but have still not seen anyone with a funding offer from them.

Re: 2014 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results
Undergrad Institution: Two different top 15 universities in Canada
Major(s): First degree in Psychology, second in Statistics
Minor(s): -
GPA: 3.3
Type of Student: Domestic White female
Did not take GREs, only applied to Canadian schools~
Program Applying: Statistics/Biostatistics
Research Experience: 4 years of volunteering in Psychology labs with varying roles at each one, ranging from data collection and analysis, administering experiments, and assisting in design of studies. Many of my courses in both Psychology and Statistics have also involved research projects centered around data analysis.
Letters of Recommendation: Two Statistics profs, 1 recent PhD graduate with whom I worked closely at one of the Psychology labs.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: All of the programs I applied to have a heavy focus on the application of Statistics, so I feel like my Psychology background, which entailed many projects involving Statistics, helped my application. Having done my Psychology degree before my Statistics one, I find it amusing that I learned how to apply Statistics before learning the underlying theory of all the concepts...
Applying to Where:
Waterloo - M.Math Statistics (rejected on April 9)
Queen's - M.Sc. Statistics with Biostatistics Specialization (accepted on March 31)
Manitoba - M.Sc. Statistics (pending)
Memorial - M.Sc. Applied Statistics (pending)
I had a snowball's chance of hell of getting into Waterloo, ahaha.

Re: 2014 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results
so obviously this isn't useful for anyone this year. but really, the last thing i needed this semester was to spend any more time on this website than i did lurking. so, to pay it forward, i'm going to post my results now.
Undergrad Institution: top 5 liberal arts college
Major(s): math
Minor(s): computer science
GPA: 3.8
Type of Student: domestic white male
GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170 (98%)
V: 166 (96%)
W: 5.0 (93%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 760 (73%)
[took the damn thing twice; exact same score]
Program Applying: Pure math, interested in topology
Research Experience: summer research (one summer) and senior thesis in low-dimensional topology at my school. one cs reu (did not emphasize this; not math-y or really relevant). no papers published.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: n/a
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: grader and ta for a number of math and cs classes
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: took measure theory course at bsm. no other grad courses because liberal arts school.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: one quality recommendation (from research/thesis advisor); other two were from professors i had class with but didn't know too well, and all three from my school. i suspect this was not to my advantage.
Applying to Where:
since this is retrospective, gonna do this in order of responses. all programs were pure math if available, math otherwise.
usc - accepted via email march 3, offered dornsife fellowship march 10 via email. fellowship offers is 29k for 5 years, 2 of fellowship support and 3 of ta-ship. original offer was 23k ta-ship for 5 years.
ucsd - rejected via email on march 6; be warned, if you get an formulaic rejection email from them it will be at 11:55pm pacific time.
northwestern - rejected via email march 20.
started to get antsy as it got closer to april, and emailed the next four schools on march 24.
ucla - rejected via email march 25; actually did not get a response to my email, just an email to check website for decision.
upenn - wait-listed march 26 in response to email inquiry; told i was on bottom half of wait-list and unlikely to receive an offer. no word from them, so i'm assuming that that is the case.
duke - rejected april 7 via email; also no actual response and email to check website
brandeis - wait-listed march 24 in response to email inquiry; told that they only accepted 5 students and were waiting for responses. received email april 12 asking if i was still interested; said no since i preferred usc at that point (especially with the fellowship). was then rejected april 14 via email.
then (of course) once i'd accepted usc's offer:
ut austin - wait-listed february 26 via email (only school that bothered to tell me i was on a wait-list without me asking, which i appreciated). then accepted april 15 via email. 16k ta-ship for 5 years, 5k first year summer support, no guaranteed summer funding in future years. will attend!
in the end everything worked out great for me. ut austin was my top choice from the beginning, so i'm very excited to go there. i felt bad withdrawing my acceptance of usc's offer at the last minute, since they were very nice to me throughout the process and the fellowship was great, but ultimately i preferred the program at ut.
that said, i don't think i chose my list of schools very well; if i had to do it again, i would still apply to ut, usc, and ucla (last one because i'm willing to blow a bit of money on one why the hell not place). potentially also upenn, and probably brandeis, since they offered me an application fee waiver. duke, ucsd, and northwestern were really not good fits for my research interests--interested in topology?? why not apply to schools that don't really do much topology??--so i don't really know why i applied to them. i actually sort of realized that as i was writing my essays, but at that point i had already asked my recommenders to send letters to them, so i pressed on.
i also would have applied to more mid-ranked schools, since i was (pretty arrogantly given my qualifications, i now realize) on some level counting on getting into a top 25 sort of place; while that did happen in the end, it would have been much less stressful for me most of this semester if i'd had more options than usc to choose from. (even though i was pretty happy with usc up until when ut offered, i would have been more comfortable with more options).
tl;dr don't be arrogant and apply to schools that make sense

Posting late because I was too lazy and now am procrastinating Alg HW. Honestly wanted to go to UW for match level program/location from the start, but would have gone to any of these places and figured I should reach a bit. Probably should have done more in undergrad (like going to office hours and getting to know professors), since I think my drive and skills are pretty solid but I never really got to know any professors at my big school. When I got waitlisted at UW I wrote them a 1/3 page email saying that it was my #1 and why and they took me off 2 days later, so I would say that a waitlist is not necessarily a bad thing. Good luck next year!

When I applied to Ph.D. programs for Fall 2013 admission, I was coming from a Master's program at state school with no Ph.D. program, so I had to change schools or stop going to school altogether. I only got into my safety school (I assume because of my less-than-thrilling MGRE score), and so I accepted as opposed to finding a job. I honestly tried to like the program, but I have not been impressed, so I decided to give it another go this year and did much better. Differences in my application from last year: (1) Raised GRE score modestly (8 percentile points), (2) Got another letter of recommendation to add to my original three, (3) Have a publication now, which was only submitted last year this time, (4) Completed my Master's thesis, which was in progress last year this time, and (5) Did very well (and have good grades to show for it) in my first semester of the Ph.D. program I am currently in. Apparently these (seemingly small) changes made a big difference!
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): Writing
GPA: 3.99
Type of Student: DWM
GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 167 (95%)
V: 159 (80%)
W: 4.5 (73%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 660 (52%)
Program Applying: Pure Math Ph.D.
Research Experience: Master's Thesis, 1 publication (actually cited by Richard Stanley in his Catalan Addendum, although that will not be a factor; didn't even realize it until well after the application season was over, and I doubt I would have mentioned it anyway), helped a friend with his Master's thesis. No REUs.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean's list, Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: TA for 3 years now, independent tutoring.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Master's and Doctoral GPA 4.0
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: In a Ph.D. program currently at a low-ranked math program at a state school. Trying to move on to a better program. Have taken a pretty decent number of graduate classes (with 4.0 GPA), which should help. Have 4 solid letters of recommendation.
Applying to Where: No real reason to classify any of these schools as "Reach" or "Safety"…they are all somewhere between 28-56 in ranking for math graduate programs according to US News.
Ohio State--Rejected upon inquiry
University of Oregon--Rejected via postal mail
North Carolina State--Accepted with $16,000 TAship, health insurance, and $4,000 summer support for first summer (Declined)

Undergrad Institution: One of best schools in South America, but not much international recognition
Master's Institution: Same as above
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): Not applicable
GPA: 3.96/4.00, and then 4.00/4.00 during the Master's
Type of Student: International white male
GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 169 (97%) I wonder what I could have missed!
V: 165 (95%) Memorized 1000+ words using flashcards. Sure payed off.
W: 4.5 (78%) Not my thing, writing.
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 860 (90%) Very stressful experience, especially if you have only one chance of succeeding.
TOEFL Score: (114 = R30/L30/S24/W30) The problem with Speaking is the time limit for your answers, gotta practice that.
Program Applying: Pure Math (intended area Analysis or Geometric Analysis)
Research Experience: 3-year undergrad advanced study project, 2-year Master's, 3 summer schools
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Best student of class, Third Prize award at IMC (Bulgaria), Silver Medal at Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad, many other minor prizes in math competitions
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: One semester TAship (Calculus II)
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I have an MS (12 Grad classes) and solid recommendations (at least the one I've seen)
Any Other Info That Might Matter: A weak point is that I've never done anything (classes, REU's, summer schools) in any school other than my home institution. My recommenders are all from here. Also, no publications, although in Pure Math that is normal.
Applying to Where: (all Pure Math)
Dream schools
MIT - Rejected. There goes my top school!
Princeton - Rejected.
Harvard - Rejected.
Great schools
Rutgers (New Brunswick) - Admitted w/ TAship. (Last school to reach decision). Will attend!
Temple (Philadelphia) - Admitted w/ TAship+Fellowship. Declined.
Northwestern (Evanston) - Admitted w/ TAship. Declined.
Johns Hopkins (Baltimore) - Admitted w/ TAship+Fellowship. Declined.
Washington (Seattle) - Admitted w/ TAship+Fellowship. Declined.
Safe schools
Michigan (Ann-Arbor) - Rejected.

Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) - Admitted. (First school to reach decision). Declined.
Wisconsin (Madison) - Admitted w/ TAship. Declined.
Final thoughts:
My "great school, safe school" ranking needs revision.
Applications cost a lot of money.
When you have more than one option, deciding which one to attend is the hardest part of all.

Re: 2014 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results
Hello,
Am not new to this thread, but this is actually my first time of writing on this platform.
I actually got admitted to the masters program in mathematics at Ohio University.
I would like to ask if anyone has a good information as regards mathematics at Ohio University.
I am actually interested in Mathematical biology because I kind of have a research experience in the field.

Re: 2014 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results
I confess that. I didn't read the whole thread because it's way too long. But I'd like to know if someone here is preparing the subject test (or retaking it)
Thanks
