GRE Writing Score 4 - should I bother

Post by orangebaby » Tue May 27, 2014 11:00 pm

Undergrad: Non-HYP Ivy
Major: Stat
Aiming for top 20 schools

Now I have
General: 164(V), 170(Q), 4.0(W)
Subject: 840 (87%)

Should I bother retaking any of those exams? If the rest of my application is not particularly strong, do you think higher GRE scores - be it 1 ~ 2 % - can make a difference?

Given your score, you should be fine. When I talked to one of my professors, I asked him whether the General GRE is important. He gave me a flat-out "It doesn't matter as long as your score is not awfully bad". Subject is important, but your score is decent enough to compete for top 20 programs (where I am now). I also had a writing score 4, and I got into a top 30 program, but my major is math though, not stats. Good luck!

Personally, I wouldn't. Your scores are almost exactly the same as mine (I majored in math though). I got into two top 30's but not top 20. I guess that isn't encouraging for you, but I still doubt a slight improvement in your scores would help much at all. Personal statement and personal fit matter a lot to admissions committees so you could spend more time on those rather than studying a bunch for a chance at a small improvement.
