Came with 5-year $27,500 fellowship without TA duties (for two of those years).
Notified by phone; official letter to follow within about a week. Invited to open house on March 4th.

From my observations, if you see people getting waitlisted and you haven't heard back yet then expect a rejection lettermathmonkey wrote:Is Berkeley also sending out admits in batches or what. I saw that there has been a few Berkeley admits last week.

Does Berkeley even waitlist? I didn't see any waitlists on gradcafe, which is what's worrying me a little bit.

Last time there was a Berkeley waitlist reported on GradCafe was in 2013.mathmonkey wrote:Does Berkeley even waitlist? I didn't see any waitlists on gradcafe, which is what's worrying me a little bit.

He said there are various fellowships, so they may not all be the same, or each package may even be a mixture of different fellowships. Mine is for 21K for the academic year, not including summers. I forget how much he said for summers, maybe 3 - 4K? I couldn't tell, but I think they are still adding on and finalizing things in terms of distribution of funds. And he said that they will be meeting through Feb 10th to select/ accept other candidates, and that the official letters won't go out until a few days after that, maybe early the following week. Hope that helps!rpought wrote:I just got accepted there but missed the phone call. How much is the fellowship?KatrinaElizabeth wrote:Just accepted to UC Santa Cruz! Thanks! I'm calling him tomorrow. I'm probably not going to UCSC but it's still cool to see all my options. I saw http://graddiv.ucsc.edu/financial-aid/ and you probably got Eugene Cota Robles fellowship.KatrinaElizabeth wrote:He said there are various fellowships, so they may not all be the same, or each package may even be a mixture of different fellowships. Re: Fall 2016 Application Sweat Thread
I'm a current PhD student and I just talked about job searches with some 5th years in my program over the last week. Food for thought: a fellowship with no TA duties is not necessarily a great thing. It is nice to not *have* to TA every term, but it is good experience - you should ask if it is possible to TA (or even really teach!) if you get such a fellowship. One 5th year student who has several teaching-heavy job offers on the table (which he prefers to research-heavy jobs) noted that the hiring committees seemed impressed by how many different courses he had TA experience for. Also, I expected to hate teaching/TAing, but it is actually quite enjoyable if you have some engaged students, and it helps my productivity to have some structure to my week outside of just classes and studying.

Yes, I was just thinking about this throughout this past week as well! I've been a tutor, grader,TA, and Ross Mathematics Counselor, and actually really love teaching, so I was going to ask about potential opportunities to teach despite the fellowships I've been offered. Plus, I was hoping to apply to be a 'mentor' at USA/Canada Mathcamp next summer, and they really want to see teaching experience, as I'd be teaching my own class there.MathCat wrote:I'm a current PhD student and I just talked about job searches with some 5th years in my program over the last week. Just admitted to NYU Courant for Atmosphere-Ocean Science + Math PhD program. Big decisions to make.

What do you, guys, think on Stanford's ICME? I mean I know that Courant is the best, but what about Stanford besides its name and proximity to the Valley? Thanks
Edit1: Congrats!!!

I assume your question is directed to me. Otherwise, ignore this answer.gradnt2015 wrote:

I personally think the choice here all depends on your personal career goal. Do you really want to stick to the academia, or industry? If the former, NYU is an obvious choice (people like Peter Lax, Robert Kohn, Marco Avellaneda are household names....) But the latter, well, having Stanford on your resume guarantees a lucrative, easy path to the world of Tech + VC/PE industry. So I guess you have to ask yourself: do I want to have a chance at being a millionaire, or do I want to see my names printed in all classical textbooks after I die? If I were you, I would have to choose the former, because I'm not good enough to belong to the later case:) Good luck man!

Thanks! Haven't applied to NYU though. Comparing with other schools such as Cornell's CAM, MIT and Caltech's CMS. Also, I guess I would like to keep my options open, including academia and industry. Good luck you too! Thanks again.ghjk wrote:I assume your question is directed to me. Otherwise, ignore this answer.gradnt2015 wrote:

Re: Fall 2016 Application Sweat Thread
I just noticed that 2 people posted on gradcafe that they were rejected from UIC (University of Illinois at Chicago) and they indicated that the rejection came via the website. I just checked my online application, and it does not indicate any admissions decision. Anybody else heard from UIC?
Re: Fall 2016 Application Sweat Thread
I just checked the UIC website and I got rejected as well. Perhaps you are still in the running...!

There are some rejections from Cornell on GradCafe. Are there more people here that did not receive a rejection nor acceptance from Cornell yet?

Me! I saw the 5-6 rejections on Gradcafe, and then checked my email (and spam folder). Nothing. I still haven't heard from them. Maybe we are wait listed?jsmith wrote:There are some rejections from Cornell on GradCafe. Are there more people here that did not receive a rejection nor acceptance from Cornell yet?
Re: Fall 2016 Application Sweat Thread
I hope so I sent them an e-mail to ask whether I was waitlisted as I saw someone who did that on GradCafe and got a reply. I never got a reply though.
Re: Fall 2016 Application Sweat Thread
I have yet to receive any correspondence from Cornell. I am hoping that this means I survived through their first round of rejections.jsmith wrote:There are some rejections from Cornell on GradCafe. Are there more people here that did not receive a rejection nor acceptance from Cornell yet?

I got into Cornell.
FYI, there's a visiting day in Mid-March, but the deadline to tell the university that you'll attend is February 17. Perhaps if you haven't heard back from them by this point, you might not get in.
