Ohio State vs University of British Columbia
I have an admit from both OSU and UBC, Vancouver. I am interested in algebraic geometry and algebraic number theory. Far as I know, both have good depts wrt these areas.
I don't know how much it matters but UBC has better ranking(<30) on QS compared to OSU (~50). Although OSU is offering me more stipend than UBC.
What do people in the community think would be a good choice among these two?

I do not see a quite optimistic outcome for students from OSU in general. I might be wrong given the fact that they have a large number of grads each year and the sample is not homogeneous superb. You can check their student outcomes or talk to profs there to see what their opinions are. Frankly, I was told by one of my friend at OSU that UBC definitely is in a better position given its placement and research activities. I would say UBC>OSU in general aspects. However, after graduation, the post-doc position boils down to connections. Then I would say OSU>UBC as it is an US school but I might be wrong on this. I think you may want to look into long term getting post-doc or short term getting phd from a prestigious school which MAY help you secure a good post-doc position. Maybe others can throw in more productive ideas. I am still questioning myself on these sort of questions at the moment.

As you wrote a lot stuff, I can not give extra information regarding Utah and UBC but I can tell you that about junior seminar students. I have close friends studying at University of Toronto doing weekly students seminars. You can not find anything about this on UT website. But they are doing great job. So if you can not find anything on website, it doesn't mean there is no such seminars. I think American university websites is better than Canadian ones in terms of arousing students' interest. As you mentioned, UBC is really better than Utah in terms of competition. The most important thing is you will have really motivated and extremely good students around you at UBC. I think that is important part. Good luck!

I would choose Ohio State simply because I don't want to live in Canada
Re: Ohio State vs University of British Columbia
UBC seems a better choice if you ask me for algebraic geometry. Behind, Karu and Riechestein are pretty established.
