On February 13, 2017, it was brought to my attention that a lot of comments were being posted in the "2017 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results" topic so I created this new topic called "Comments moved out of the 2017 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results" and moved a bunch of posts into this topic.

I think your profile is solid, plus you're from a top school in applied math (NYU), so might be a plus. But being Chinese means a crapshot, so I think you could count on Michigan, UPenn, UCLA and Wisconsin-Madison, Stony Brook (for sure?), UCSD.

Pretty easy to find out which uni you go to given the information you gave. Just a head's up since it seems like you kinda wanna keep it a secret.thing1 wrote:Undergrad Institution: Mid-sized private (ranked 111 undergrad US World News)

Research Experience:
Rejected by my 5 REUs --> Sophomore-Junior Year Summer: Undergrad thesis program at home university (9 students total accepted)
Junior-Senior Year Summer:
First half-University of Oxford tutorial in functional analysis, got a grade of α-, which is like an A-
in the English system (btw Oxford's a really cool place and they hook you up with nice housing that's right next to the Thames, so if you
ever get a study-abroad there then go if you have the money and/or external funding)
Second half-Came back to home university and used functional analysis stuff for my thesis...ended up learning stuff that helped me break a
huge roadblock in my thesis big time (so this is actually a huge part of my personal statement)
Awards/Honors/Recognitions:
Just stuff at my university stuff like Dean's list and getting accepted to be part of math and computer science
teams for COMAP and ACM-ICPC...didn't do crazy good, but we didn't score zero either
Pertinent Activities or Jobs:
Private tutor my freshman year (btw you make a LOT more money this way than being a TA but it's not as fun)
Teaching assistant sophomore-junior year (so 4 semesters)
Fitness instructor freshman year-now (pertinent b/c it's similar to being a TA)
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help:
Had 5 letter writers that were all pretty strong I'm guessing (I waived my right to access on every one)...some applications allowed 3, some
allowed 5...I shuffled some around based on program I was applying to, e.g. one was a comp. sci. prof so I used his for every applied math or
interdisciplinary program, used my measure theory prof if I was interested in pure math profs at the dept...my thesis advisor was the only one I
used for every application. Then for ones with 5, I just requested all 5.
Lots of my CV stuff is at my home university, which that along with my subject score (which isn't awful but not great...it's Ohio State's median)
is what makes me most nervous...gave two colloquium talks at my home university, one publication through my home university (so not like
a legit journal), a couple talks as part of our honors program, and only one talk at an AMS national conference (literally yesterday)
Putnam score of 9 my sophomore year (0 junior year)
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter:
Oxford's transcripts give you a numerical grade AND your tutor (~professor) has to write a quick blurb (like quarter to half page) about you,
so I uploaded that to my application when I could because it was pretty positive stuff
Applying to Where:
All these are pending because I posted this on Jan 6 and all these are Ph.D. programs and these are ordered by my preference
Caltech - Computing+Mathematical Sciences
Michigan - Math
Maryland - Math

Re: 2017 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
Not really...I honestly did it b/c nobody else named their school haha...the only part is when I mention how a lot of stuff on my CV was at my home university or anything + the fact that it's not like I go to Harvard or Princeton, but any admissions officer who might be perusing this would see that on my CV anyways haha. Reputation of my school isn't bad (e.g. an alumnus just won the Wolf Prize recently), but I know how competitive the process is.verysweetjuices wrote:Pretty easy to find out which uni you go to given the information you gave. If you check out gradcafe, you'll see that this happened last year, too. I think that Chicago always sends acceptances first. Also, by last year's records, many more universities should send acceptances in the next 10 days, such as UCLA, MIT, Harvard, Princeton, Yale etc.verysweetjuices wrote:How did Chicago already accept people?

Funding is sparse for German schools, and also very competitive. Careful with this one.Berlin Mathematical School - Applied math (the only international school on here. Looks like an interesting program and a lot of people from work were suggesting I apply to some places abroad. So I gave it a go.)

Re: 2017 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
I should have ordered it by attractiveness of the program to me - Ohio state is more attractive than Maryland because it has more faculty doing what I want to do. And thanks, congrats on your acceptances too! I was told to steer clear of NYU's math PhD since the department is full of analysts but if you're into that, God speed.verysweetjuices wrote:

By the way, I don't think OSU is a "even they haven't accepted me yet" school, it's just a large department that takes in a lot of students, but there are still standards.
It might be that they order applications like that, but in any case I think you'll get in, these are just first (or second? I never thought I'd be accepted on the first round) round admissions.

Yes, but any requirement can be waived with a bit of paperwork (how much probably depends on the program) and since most math professors recognize that the general test is a formality they will still accept strong candidates.verysweetjuices wrote: I'm calling shenanigans on this. The egg contributes XX and the sperm contributes either XX or XY so the end result is XX XY or XX XX.
And it matters because I want to know.
And I realize there is a difference between sex and gender... thats why I asked what its sex was.
Re: 2017 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
Gametes are haploid, so each only contributes one chromosome per pair. You should also be more respectful. How duhmark identifies is relevant for their profile (as it makes them a more diverse applicant than my DWM self), but this forum is not the place for more personal details.verysweetjuices wrote: ???

You should also be more respectful. How duhmark identifies is relevant for their profile (as it makes them a more diverse applicant than my DWM self), but this forum is not the place for more personal details.verysweetjuices wrote: ???
The egg contributes XX and the sperm contributes either XX or XY so the end result is XX XY or XX XX.
And it matters because I want to know.
And I realize there is a difference between sex and gender... thats why I asked what its sex was.

The point is that that question is not appropriate for this forum; their biological sex has no direct impact on their application.verysweetjuices wrote: I asked a simple question. That was respectful. Don't tell me what to do. You should mind your own business.
Also, you referred to duhmark as "it", which I would hardly characterize as respectful.

Take your own advice. It's not your business what someone's chromosomes are.verysweetjuices wrote:You should mind your own business.

Do I look like an admissions committee? I'll ask whatever I want, thanks.eulerphi wrote:The point is that that question is not appropriate for this forum; their biological sex has no direct impact on their application.verysweetjuices wrote: I asked a simple question. Comments moved out of the 2017 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results topic
Today it was brought to my attention that a lot of comments were being posted in the "2017 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results" topic so I created this new topic called "Comments moved out of the 2017 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results" with the plan to move a bunch of comments into here.

Ah yikes, I knew including that might be a controversial decision. Thank you for coming to my defense! It's distantly possible verysweetjuices is just unaware how hurtful referring to me as an "it" may be, so I'll say it: if you don't know, the default should be they/them pronouns. The chances a nonbinary/genderqueer person identifies as an "it" are microscopic compared to those for they/them. And since you're so desperate to know, the answer is XY.eulerphi wrote:The point is that that question is not appropriate for this forum; their biological sex has no direct impact on their application.verysweetjuices wrote: I asked a simple question.
