Congrats! I'm surprised not that many people apply to Caltech when compared to the number of people that apply to UChicago and other top 10 schools.math_hopeful wrote:Admitted to Caltech Math! This is my first acceptance in a top 10 ranked program, so I'm so relieved and ecstatic right now.

I am an international student and I got accepted by UT-Austin just now.
Re: Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
Are you a domestic applicant?. I'm an international student and Emailed to UGA grad administrator and I was told that some students will hear admission decisions this month and most will be made in March. I feel really nervous.mathers101 wrote:Is this with respect to UGA? I also was notified I was a finalist for a fellowship, even though I haven't been accepted, and I've noticed they already sent out some acceptances.FreddieBiddleBooty wrote:If a math department emails you and tells you that you're a finalist for a fellowship, does this usually mean acceptance? Wait listed by Rutgers. If anyone got accepted and not planning to go, please let them know asap, this would greatly help people like us.

How did you find out that you were wait listed by Rutgers? Has Rutgers sent out all of their decisions?silentdepression wrote:Wait listed by Rutgers. If anyone got accepted and not planning to go, please let them know asap, this would greatly help people like us.

Has anyone applied to Cambridge's Part III/MASt program in Pure Math? Is your app's status still at "Under review by department?" Or has it changed?

Somehow I got into Brown even though one of my professor forgot to submit a letter of recommendation

I'm not sure if it's just me but, it seems that Berkeley accepts people that are rejected from most other top 10 schools. I believe someone this year was rejected from Brown but accepted to Berkeley.

Has everyone heard back from Cornell?
Re: Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
No, I haven't heard back yet. I'm taking it as a good sign (not as good as being accepted obviously, but perhaps there's still a chance).ArtinWedderburn wrote:Has everyone heard back from Cornell?
I'm under the impression Berkeley accepts more students than they intend to keep in their program and then weeds them out through competitive qualifying exams.djysyed wrote:I'm not sure if it's just me but, it seems that Berkeley accepts people that are rejected from most other top 10 schools.

Congratulations on Brown curvature-form
Re: Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
From what I've seen Berkeley and UCLA have much lower standards for domestic applicants, especially domestic females. I've seen a lot of people here get in over other people with (seemingly) better qualifications, but those other people just happen to not be from the US.djysyed wrote:Congrats!curvature-form wrote:Somehow I got into Brown even though one of my professor forgot to submit a letter of recommendation

Unrelated note; it should be a necessary qualification to spell MIT's name correctly in order to get in MIT - so many people are typing it wrong over at gradcafe it's hurting my eyes.
Re: Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
I'm still waiting. It looks like they sent out more rejections today. Who knows how many more acceptances there will be...ArtinWedderburn wrote:Has everyone heard back from Cornell?

According to one of their PhD students on /r/math, 80% of the students passed the preliminary exam on their first try.EGA wrote: I'm under the impression Berkeley accepts more students than they intend to keep in their program and then weeds them out through competitive qualifying exams.
This makes sense as quite a few people with under an 800 MGRE have been getting in.lambert wrote:From what I've seen Berkeley and UCLA have much lower standards for domestic applicants, especially domestic females. Has anyone else not heard back from University of Utah or UC Santa Barbara? I saw a while back posts on gradcafe with results but I haven't heard anything. The silence is killing me!
Re: Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
I just turned down my offer to UC Santa Barbara. Haven't heard anything from Utah. Good luck!Krd wrote:Has anyone else not heard back from University of Utah or UC Santa Barbara? I saw a while back posts on gradcafe with results but I haven't heard anything. The silence is killing me!
I was informed otherwise by a professor who has spent a fair amount of time at Berkeley/collaborating with people there. Perhaps the situation has improved in recent years, but I actually decided against applying there based on what was told to me.djysyed wrote: According to one of their PhD students on /r/math, 80% of the students passed the preliminary exam on their first try.

Does anyone know how much fellowship Rutgers provide each year?

Has there been any news on Toronto?
Re: Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
Chicago seems to be done with admissions. Check your spam box.
Re: Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
Has any domestic students gotten an offer from Berkeley yet?
Re: Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
Berkeley admissions seems really different this year for some reason. They've only sent out a few offers.

Yes, I have.ximonk wrote:Has any domestic students gotten an offer from Berkeley yet?
Re: Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
A professor told me the same thing. He said they admit 150 students and completely expect half of them to fail miserably. This was definitely 30 years ago.blahquaker wrote:According to this post on quora, it may have been true at one point, but isn't now.EGA wrote: I was informed otherwise by a professor who has spent a fair amount of time at Berkeley/collaborating with people there. Re: Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
It would be great if they actually admitted 150 students. I would be so happy if that were the case.

Same here. I’m an international student and I only got in UCB among top schools.djysyed wrote:Congrats!curvature-form wrote:Somehow I got into Brown even though one of my professor forgot to submit a letter of recommendation

aaaaaaaaaah You might want to check your inbox. Chicago sent out some rejections. If you didn't get one you might be on their waitlist.

Got rejected by Chicago and Cornell in a row. Thank god I was admitted to Berkeley

It's very painful watching people post about responses/acceptances on GradCafe from schools I applied to, knowing that this means I am not in the first round of choices, and probably won't be accepted there (or anywhere).

I haven't received anything, but I decided to withdraw and I wrote them an email... Not only they haven't replied to my email, but there isn't anything on my app page indicating I withdrew, so idk what's happening with Rice..megansoros wrote:Has anyone received their decision from Rice?
