Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
Re: Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
I just got an offer from Ohio State. This is a bit surprising since my OSU application is incomplete. Does anyone else got an interview request from CMU ?
Re: Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
I was admitted via phone a week or two ago, then officially yesterday. On the phone they indicated that I would get funding through a teaching assistantship some semesters, and the number theory RTG others. No official offer though. For what it's worth, I seriously doubt they would admit you without fundingheshan666 wrote:Got admission to Clemson; but no word on funding. Has anyone else received admission to their program?. Anyway I'm pretty happy because this is my third acceptance. So far they've all been acceptances Three more to go!!
Re: Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
Anyone heard back from UWashington for the pure math program?
Re: Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
I got updates on the application process after meeting with the DGS:
1. This was considered the strongest applicant pool they've ever seen so don't feel bad if you were rejected. JHU told me the same thing
2. They didn't see the need for any MS students due to the strong PhD pool.
3. GPA, MGRE and Verbal portion of general GRE were considered very important. I was pretty surprised about the Verbal portion being a factor but Mathematicians need to read and write advanced mathematical literature with ease.

I suppose they don't make offers until late Feb or March. This is my last how of getting an offer from one of my top choice schools in the first round.qqq15 wrote:Anyone heard back from UWashington for the pure math program?

Anyone heard anything from UGA regarding decision or invitation to visit the school? They have posted the info about graduate school visit day (http://www.math.uga.edu/graduate-visitation-day-2018).

Currently on the Berkley waiting list. If any of you got accepted and find a better fit somewhere else, please decline. Berkely is my top school and I have never been so anxious

I E-mailed and they replied that the waitlist is very long. So I think your assumption holds.yon3da wrote:I'm in the same boat. Has anyone reached out to the grad chair? Has anyone heard back from the pure math program of U Washington ?

I've applied to it but not heard back. I'd be surprised if I wasn't one of their top candidates, and also kind of sad because it's one of my top choices.nothing wrote:Has anyone heard back from the pure math program of U Washington ?

UCSD seem to be releasing a large batch of decisions. It includes waitlists so I assume they're going to be releasing decisions for everyone in this round? I was curious if anyone else is still waiting to hear back.
Re: Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
I'm also riveted to gradcafe, watching the UCSD posts roll in, wondering when my decision is going to come. Wouldn't be so sure that waitlists and rejections imply that they're going to release decisions for everyone in this round, seems not to work that way for other schools. But hopefully..regularitylemma wrote:UCSD seem to be releasing a large batch of decisions. It includes waitlists so I assume they're going to be releasing decisions for everyone in this round? There's a couple of posts on gradcafe with acceptances. I haven't heard back myself.pyxis wrote:Has anyone heard back from UC Davis or UC Santa Cruz for pure math?
Personally feeling a bit depressed about all of this, I've heard back from 3/8 schools and had 2 rejections/1 unfunded admission. I guess that's to be expected: I didn't have time to prepare for MGRE and did poorly. Getting to the point where I'm just preparing to apply again in 2019 and hope I can find a programming job for a year.
Re: Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
They provide hotel accommodation as well as reimburse most part of the travel ticket .mathers101 wrote:To those admitted to UCSD: has anybody emailed to ask if they'll fund department visits? I figured I should check here before emailing them myself

When is visitor’s day for UCLA and UMich? I imagine waitlists for those schools are not going to be shortened until people start declining offers, which typically is after visitor’s day.

Waitlisted at UIUC!!! They're asking people to withdraw by the 16th if they don't plan on going.
Re: Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
I was waitlisted as well. It doesn't look as if there is a good chance to be admitted however:djysyed wrote:Waitlisted at UIUC!!! They're asking people to withdraw by the 16th if they don't plan on going.
At least they are clear about the situation. If acceptances come in as expected, then we will make no further offers.

I plan to reject UIUC unless they raise my stipend. I will begin negotiations with them about this at visitor’s day.

Do you think the standard 20k deal is not a comfortable stipend for the location? I'm an international, so I don't have a very good intuition about the numbers.Rise wrote:I plan to reject UIUC unless they raise my stipend. I will begin negotiations with them about this at visitor’s day.

Re: Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
If it's 20k for 9 months and summer support on top of that, that's not bad at all (given that you don't have a family to feed). If it's 20k for the year with maybe no summer support, then it's stretching it a little, but more than manageable. This is just my opinion based on my lifestyle. I don't go out that often but spend more money than others on certain things.regularitylemma wrote:Do you think the standard 20k deal is not a comfortable stipend for the location? Right now at my masters program I get roughly 17k for 9 months and like 2-3k for summers, and I live pretty comfortably for the most part. And I'm in a rental house for $1200/month rent (split with my wife makes $600/month) with a dog.
Re: Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
No problem! As soon as I am done negotiating with them, I will know my decision and make it as soon as possible, so people on the waitlist can have closure more quickly. Everyone who's been sweating with me in this thread is a classmate of mineFreddieBiddleBooty wrote:Thank you for being on top of that (and thanks to the other applicants who are on top of their withdraws!).Rise wrote:I plan to reject UIUC unless they raise my stipend. I do think it is comfortable given the lower cost of living in the Midwest, but at the moment I have more competitive offers. For UIUC to be more appealing, I would have to ask for a raise from them.regularitylemma wrote:Do you think the standard 20k deal is not a comfortable stipend for the location? I hope I am not coming off as greedy. I am doing this because I respect UIUC and all of its faculty, and I would like to go there. Instead of outright rejecting them, I'd like to give UIUC a chance to match my other offers.

Re: Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
The UIUC TA offer is 20k for the 9 months, then guaranteed (at least) 2k the first summer, and expected-but-not-guaranteed additional support for subsequent summer. I currently live in the UK on the equivalent of 15k a year, which comfortably covers 6 months of rent+expenses and 2-3 long distance flights, so the 20k figure seemed more or less okay to me assuming vaguely similar costs.FreddieBiddleBooty wrote:If it's 20k for 9 months and summer support on top of that, that's not bad at all (given that you don't have a family to feed). Nah that's fair enough on your part, but I would be a bit surprised if they do choose to negotiate. The only way I can think of for them to give you a better stipend (without it coming across as a bit dodgy) would be to put you on some sort of fellowship.Rise wrote:I do think it is comfortable given the lower cost of living in the Midwest, but at the moment I have more competitive offers. And regarding the withdrawals, how quickly a few individuals do it may unfortunately have little effect. I expect that universities have a lot of data about retention rates, and seeing that the standard offers do not vary, these measures should be fairly robust. This would make me think that in general, getting accepted from a waitlist is just frustratingly difficult. :/

Re: Fall 2018 Sweat Thread
The director of Graduate Studies from UIUC sent me an email notifying I am on the waitlist today. They ask me, if I am still interested, to send my response with area of ok nterests and/or a professor who I want to work with. To be honest, I do not have any specific area of interests. Because of my lack of exposure to any research experience. What would be the best response I can make with this?
Also, I got an email from IU Bloomington last week that I am on the list for considerations and they ask me if I am still interested. They said they will have more info about my offer this week. Is it safe to think I am (un)officially accpeted to here?
