Undergrad Institution: Clemson University
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): None
GPA: 3.09/4
Type of Student: Domestic White Male

Grad Institution: Clemson University
Major(s): Mathematics
GPA: 3.85/4

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 166 (90%)
V: 149 (42%)
W: 4.0 (59%)

GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 610 (~40th percentile)

TOEFL Score: N/A

Program Applying: Pure Mathematics Ph.D.

Research Experience: Independent study in algebraic topology with my advisor, an independent study in representation theory with an algebraist in our department, and a masters project on characteristic classes with my advisor. Also did a semester long research project in graph theory during undergrad.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean's List twice in undergrad. Had 4.0's in all my semesters as a graduate student except for a summer mini-mester.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: TA (2 years), Grader (3 years), Instructor (1 year).
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I know my recommenders extremely well, and some of them have connections at many of the universities I'm applying to. My first two letters will come from my advisor and my representation theory mentor, and I expect their letters to be strong. My last letter will come from the professor of my year long graduate algebra course, which I did extremely well in, and I expect that letter to be very good. I'm sure they will all mention how motivated I am as well. Attended a summer program on algebraic geometry/topology at the University of Chicago and a graduate student geometry/topology conference at UIC.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your Application and Might Matter: Many graduate courses in addition to the year long algebra sequence, in particular functional analysis, measure theory, complex analysis, algebraic number theory, and commutative algebra, with A's in each of these. Currently sitting in on a point-set topology course taught by my representation theory mentor, as I never took that and am just wanting to fill in that gap in my knowledge. I was very lazy during undergrad, which mainly stemmed from my severe depression, but I am much more mentally healthy, focused, and determined nowadays.

V: 170 (94%)

GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: 720 (63%), and it was my second time taking it. I'm ready to write it off, though - it's not PROHIBITIVELY bad, and the test is ridiculous.

Undergrad Institution: Top European (for math)
Major(s): Math, B.Sc.
Minor(s): Philosophy
GPA: 3.86 / 4.0
Type of Student: International, White male

Graduate Institution: Same as undergraduate
Major(s): Math, M.Sc.
Minor(s): N/A
GPA: 4.0 / 4.0

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170 (96%)
V: 165 (96%)
W: 4.5 (82%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 840 (85%)

The subject GRE could have gone a bit better since I scored >90% on the practice exams. I didn't feel like the actual exam was any harder but I'm pretty sure that I messed up more due to nervousness.

TOEFL: 117 = R30/L30/S29/W28

Program Applying: PhD in Combinatorial Optimization (CO, ACO, CS or Math depending on the university)

Research Experience:
  • ~1 year in applied logic (formal mathematics, proof assistants)
    • Supervised by my 3rd LOR writer
    • Work was presented at a major conference but not by me
  • ~3 years on an industry research project on vehicle routing
    • Worked on this project from the prototype phase to the first practical application
    • Supervised by my 1st and 2nd LOR writers
    • Wrote my bachelors thesis about this work
    • Some interesting results along the way but nothing published yet (outside of that thesis)
  • Recently started working on masters thesis
Awards/Honors/Recognitions:
  • Fairly prestigious, merit-based national scholarship
Pertinent Activities or Jobs:
  • Not super relevant: ~2 years contract work in software development (C#)
  • Private tutoring here and there during the last 4 years
  • Research and software development (C++, Python) for that industry research project mentioned above
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help:
  • I've taken quite a few grad courses, especially in discrete mathematics / CS theory and mathematical logic.
  • I've met potential advisors at two of my top choices in person and talked to them extensively. The conversations went really well and they encouraged me to apply and contact them.
  • All my letter writers have known me for years and I expect that my letters will be very strong. My 1st letter writer in particular is a leading researcher in my field and has explicitly told me that he'll write an exceptionally strong LOR.

Type of Student: DWM

GRE Revised General Test:
Q:169 (96? I forgot)
V:169 (99)
W:4.5 (82)

GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
570 lolololololololol nothing is real. 29%

I studied for the general for a total of 3 hours and got a near perfect score except writing, but I studied for the subject test at least 2 hours a day for 3 months and got a 570. FML.

TOEFL Score: N/A

Program Applying: PhD Applied math/differential equations.

Research Experience: 1 year plasma physics, REU in acoustics with a presentation at a meeting of the Acoustical Society of America, 2ish years in applied networks with a small portion becoming a textbook chapter, 1.5 years in fluids which became my senior thesis. Senior thesis is currently being turned into a paper and will hopefully be submitted soon?

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Nothing worth mentioning

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: TA for intro physics, advanced mechanics, and PDEs. More tutoring experience than you could shake a stick at. Taught a class (wrote the syllabus, gave out homework, graded, lectured, the whole 9 yards) for freshmen about mathematics in social science.
Taught high school science for a year then went to work for a company that makes eyeglass lenses.

Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I know my recommenders well. Also took grad classes in game theory, complex analysis, nonlinear ODEs, and asymptotic analysis and did some fun projects on Van der Pol oscillators and population dynamics with periodic birth/death rates.

Washington: submitted 1/13, funded masters offer 1/22, $2,341/month. Rejected from PhD but I expected that so the funded masters is awesome.
Maryland: submitted 1/05

A combination of getting an acceptance super early and my boss getting fired in November and my work schedule going nuts for the past 2 months led to me not submitting as many applications as I planned to. Oh well, still got one!

GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: Not good at all. Definitely should've grinded more calc problems, & been a lot smarter about time usage during the test sitting itself.

Program Applying: Pure Math, except where noted

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean's list multiple times, attended school on full tuition academic scholarship
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Worked in actuarial science for about 2.5 years following graduation from undergrad; currently working in special education
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Passed 6 actuarial exams in a span of about 3 years (took the first 2 senior year of college, before I was working in that industry). Significant pattern of improvement in grades over time (got A's in all but one of the math & CS classes I took junior & senior year). Comments:
My top ranked schools that I "may get into" are Stanford and Caltech. However, after some thought I decided that I would choose UCSD and Brown over Caltech, so I withdrew from the waitlist. In a week or so, I'll email Stanford to ask where I sit on their waitlist. 2/12.

Stony Brook is very very good at geometry, but they're also only good at geometry. Since I care about geometry I thought about it a lot, but decided that Brown and UCSD are better options (due to location/strength in other disciplines). I'd heard that Stony Brook is rather depressing due to social isolation. The Brown stipend also trumps the Stony Brook stipend by a long shot. 2/21.

Emailed Stanford to enquire about my waitlist position/chances! The reply from this email will probably determine the next five years of my life! Scary times ahead. 2/26.

Got a reply from Stanford, saying they have no idea what my chances are. No choice but to wait until April! 3/19.

GOT A SURPRISE REPLY FROM STANFORD!!! 4/11. Dreams can become reality.
