Need advice on admission chances

Post by FtYoU » Tue Oct 30, 2018 1:07 pm

Hey guys ! Don't want to bother everyone with a profile evaluation. I wanted some graduate students or people who know graduates or even people working or have some relation with admission committee to direct me on what is the best way to achieve my goal.

My goal : Being admitted for a phD in pure math (most likely mathematical logic track).
My background : Master and engineer degree in computer science in an international school ( in Europe ).
Situation : Living in the US under a green card, working for 8+ years, Do not have any recommendation from my past school because it wasn't pure math. I can probably get 2 recommendation letters from phD in computer science that work with me in a software company.

Choices :
1) Apply for a phD in some schools ( if people knows what are reach, and safety schools for logic track it would help me, I just found a ranking in google )
2) Apply for a masters with the goal of applying for a phD later on.

What sensible choice would put me closer to my goal ? ( If you have any other alternatives I am open to them )

Thanks !

Contact graduate directors. Doing very well on the mGRE shows proof that you're still in touch with the mathematics that you once learned a while ago. Most schools look down upon applicants who left university for more than a couple years.

If there are any local schools, they may allow you to take a few classes as a non-degree seeking student. This would show that you're (still) capable of doing math and give you contact with professors who could potentially write recommendations.

so taking some classes as non-degree student can be done without an application ?

It's usually a different application. They'll probably want to see your transcript(s), but none of the other stuff should be necessary.
