"Other Schools" Question

So one of the applications I'm currently working on has asked what other schools I'm applying to. I found this kind of strange and was curious if anyone knew how this is considered as part of the application and also whether one should mention every single program they are applying to?

Hm... Uninformed opinion here, but I'd imagine schools would like to not waste their time accepting students who they believe are just picking their schools as a safety, and will likely get in other places.

I would probably just tell them where you're applying, so that it shows them what types of schools you are interested in, and if their school is even a good match.

I'm also uninformed but I doubt that this is the case since every application that I've seen so far (including Princeton, Chicago, etc) asked for it. I doubt that Princeton is anybody's safety school.

Edit: Here's a discussion on this topic https://academia.stackexchange.com/ques ... her-school

I would imagine that they ask this to make sure you are applying to schools that all have somewhat the same specialty. I guess they don’t want you randomly throwing your application at everyone and seeing what sticks. I can’t imagine anything else.
