GRE Mathematics by REA (5th Edition)

Post by PieceOfPi » Mon Aug 02, 2010 3:32 pm

Hi,

I found a new edition of GRE math subject prep book by REA on amazon.com

http://www.amazon.com/GRE-Mathematics-R ... 0738608386

I was wondering if this book is any better than the older edition (which has been criticized a lot for numerous typos and unreasonable questions; see http://www.amazon.com/GRE-Mathematics-R ... 0878916377). Let me know if you know anything about the newer edition of this book.

Thanks

I never read the old version of the book, but I do own the new one. The review sections are quite poor and nothing will be learned by reading them. There are also some very strange topics the authors decided to include. However, I have worked through the first test and it was very helpful. The test seemed like something ets would create (only about three questions that were poorly selected). If you need some practice tests (it has 6), I would definitely buy the book.

BTW, I found it on the shelves of my local Barnes and Nobles.

Hm, that's a surprise to me; they've been known for having a very weird questions that you know you wouldn't see on the GRE. Maybe they updated the questions.

I actually panicked after I took the first REA exam, but I did fine on the GRE without much preparation. The REA exams are mostly a review of obscure theorems. That's not at all what the real GRE looks like. The real GRE is concerned about your mastery of standard results and the resourcefulness with which you can apply them in new situations. Memorizing theorems from a graph theory book isn't going to help...
