Faculty Contacts

Post by johanMo » Wed Dec 19, 2018 1:41 pm

In an application, I see that they have a section exclusively for mentioning any contact I've had with department faculty. Would it be safe to assume that having something in this section would be beneficial? I don't know if it would necessarily hurt my application if I either left it blank, but if I contacted a faculty and the conversation did not go well I feel this would probably have a negative impact. Thoughts?

This is mostly for people who have an interest in working with specific faculty members.

It may depend on how badly you think the conversation went. One thing that comes to mind is that the person you contacted may end up reading your application, whether they are in the admissions committee or just because you are likely to have a match in interests. In that case, it might be not the best look if you haven't mentioned it, and they happen to remember communicating with you. But perhaps this is unlikely...
