2019 Math REU Thread
Re: 2019 Math REU Thread
Anyone heard back from applied math at Brown or SUAMI yet? I think it might be a little late for Brown at this point...
Re: 2019 Math REU Thread
Just got accepted to ICERM at Brown!!! I'm assuming this is their second run through as there are already a significant number of participants listed on their website.
This could be an ungodly stupid question, but I now have to choose between VERUM at Valparaiso and Brown. Am I being stupid in thinking about this at all? I never expected to get into more than one program, let alone one at such a prestigious institution. Do I just accept Brown's offer without question?

I committed to one REU and got accepted into another one 20 minutes later.

Oof that's tough... it's awesome that you got into one though, congrats!!!waffleman227 wrote:I committed to one REU and got accepted into another one 20 minutes later.
Something similar happened to me this morning lol, today was the deadline for me to respond to the only offer I got, and I had an email all written out and I was about to send it when I got another offer! I'm glad I hesitated and waited until the last second for my first offer lol

Is your second offer better than the first? Luckily my first offer was my first choice... however I imagine I wouldn't be super happy right now if things worked out the other way around.hesdee wrote:Oof that's tough... it's awesome that you got into one though, congrats!!!waffleman227 wrote:I committed to one REU and got accepted into another one 20 minutes later.

Re: 2019 Math REU Thread
My second offer definitely was better than the first! I was extremely shocked that I even got in, I had already gotten rid of the bookmark I had for their page and everything because I had just assumed they already had gotten all their participants! Now I'm sitting here really curious about what my advisor could have possibly said in my letter of rec to get me in there hahawaffleman227 wrote:Is your second offer better than the first? Btw, I declined Cornell, if that helps anyone.bd wrote:Regarding Clemson, has anybody actually received any news, besides the announcement? Clemson is sending out offers (via their announcement on mathprograms.org).
I also reached out to the others that I applied to, and was told Texas A&M, Emory, and Cornell are all full. I was told Oregon State is still selecting and would get back to me. I have not heard from ICERM.

Has anyone attended the Chicago REU and could tell me a bit about what that was like? I got a (second round) offer for it on Friday and I'm debating whether or not to accept.

Has anyone heard back from any of the following locations?:
Indiana-Bloomington
Wisconsin-Lacrosse
GVSU
Kent State
U Minn- Twin Cities
U Mich - Dearborn
(Indiana Bloomington is sending 2nd round offers on Monday, and after an email I found out that I may be included in the 2nd round.)

I feel like at this point Twin Cities is full, but don't quote me on that. As for Kent State I think they have emailed all of their shortlisted people for each group this summer. I am unsure about any of the other programs on your list.jecika95 wrote:Has anyone heard back from any of the following locations?:

Re: 2019 Math REU Thread
Not completely positive on this, but I think I saw someone say they've been conducting interviews or something along those lines?abcdefghijk wrote:Does anyone know if Boise State has started making offers?
Re: 2019 Math REU Thread
I have a friend who was interviewed and was accepted for the Game Theory project. I am unsure if they will take it, and I think is leaning toward no last time I spoke with this person. I am inclined to think that they have made similar moves for the crypto project (i.e. have interviewed and made offers).abcdefghijk wrote:Does anyone know if Boise State has started making offers?

Has anyone heard from MSRI-UP yet? I just got an acceptance from Texas State (due tomorrow at 5 lmao) and they're the only one I haven't heard anything about.

I emailed MSRI about a week ago and they responded very quickly and told me I didn't make it in. Try reaching out and see what they say!ehaithc95 wrote:Has anyone heard from MSRI-UP yet? Does anyone know if Clemson is still deciding?
Re: 2019 Math REU Thread
I have a deadline of tomorrow to reply elsewhere, so I emailed the point of contact early last week, no response. I sent an email to the point of contact again yesterday, and just now to the specific project director I want to work with. I have obviously not received responses from the emails I sent yesterday and today.abcdefghijk wrote:Does anyone know if Clemson is still deciding?
Also, I just received my official rejection from ICERM at Brown.

Who are you guys emailing? I want to ask about my application status but I don’t want to bother people who aren’t involved in the decision making process.
Re: 2019 Math REU Thread
From a friend "During the beginning there's a bunch of lectures and one can choose to attend a ton of them or a few of them. These lectures gradually thin out over the course of the program as the focus shifts to writing an REU paper on whatever subject seems most interesting (it doesn't have to be related to the lectures). Lots of interaction w/Chicago grad students and one can and should make an effort to interact w/profs as well."eigenartig wrote:Has anyone attended the Chicago REU and could tell me a bit about what that was like? I haven't heard back yet, but someone here has: https://www.reddit.com/r/math/comments/ ... iscussion/sunitabhatta wrote:Has anyone heard from UMich Ann Arbor yet?
When I emailed programs, I would go to mathprograms.org and look for a contact there. If not, the actual webpage should have a contact. If all else fails, I guess you could look on the NSF page to see who the grant was awarded to (if it is NSF funded)?AdoptedApricot wrote:Who are you guys emailing? Re: 2019 Math REU Thread
i'm sure all of the reu's are great, but i just want to give a shout-out to the umich-dearborn reu. i was there last summer, and it was easily the best/happiest 2 months of my life. awesome group of super smart and friendly people. i'm happy to answer any questions about it.
and if you don't hear back from an reu, don't sweat it; i'm pretty sure that getting in is more about luck. also, i did two reu's, and it's debatable whether the math i learned will actually be useful moving forward...it's more about figuring out whether you actually like the idea of a research career or not. just try to spend your summer doing some kind of useful math (i.e. find a good textbook in an important field, and read/do the problems) and study for the mgre.
(tho definitely do an reu if you can; idk another way to do math, get paid, and meet cool people)

The application/interview isn't project specific. As you can see on their page, the project selection process is actually done in the interview (from what I can tell that's the only reason they do the interviews in the first place).abcdefghijk wrote:waffleman227 wrote:I was offered an interview last night at around 11pm for today at noon.
