It seems that I will be rejected from every school. Even university of Oregon, my utterly safe variant, says nothing, though one international applicant has already an offer.
I am also really banking on Oregon but they are not sending offers yet, are they?

There is an acceptance post on gradcafe so its possible they are sending offers today (or already have).

There’s still a lot of time between now and April 15. Things are only just getting started! I know schools have unofficial waitlists so it could be that you’re on one of those. Then it’s just a matter of waiting and seeing if enough people decline. Try not to worry :)

How were you notified?
Email, including the funding offer.
Is it safe to say if you didn’t get an offer today that you are waitlisted or rejected?
I wouldn’t say so. I don’t know if Notre Dame has an unofficial waitlist. It could be that they do, and you might not hear back for a while, like what I said above. I don’t know, past results in gradcafe may be able to help. Nothing’s certain until you hear back!

What’s the appropriate reaction for a masters student who gets rejected from their own school’s PhD program? [besides embarrassment obviously  ]
I am in a similar situation. My school doesn’t have many master students (in fact only me still surviving this academic year) so I don’t have many examples to compare. However, I know a master student last year, who is much better than me, got all schools rejected, including my own school. By the way, do you need to apply PhD the same as others, so a different procedure?

I believe the committee is nearly done reviewing the applications. Decisions will most likely go out early next week
This is what Oregon told me. Good waiting.

This year is a bit behind I think. Since most of the postdoc hiring is between Feb 2 to Feb 7, many phd offers should come after prob next week or so.

When did they tell you this? Because there are two acceptances on gradcafe today. Perhaps both are unofficial acceptances since it's only two

Eh, I had sent an email a few days back inquiring when the department was planning to send out their initial offers. I got the reply to that email today. That's all.

Did anybody hear anything back from Cornell, UT Austin or Yale for their Applied Math programs? Also, I have not heard back yet from UMich's AIM program; is it safe to assume that I'm waitlisted or will be rejected soon, or are they still making offers?

Yea, the application is evaluated like any external application. It must be that they have an old low mGRE on file which they automatically attached to my application. I couldn’t retake...

I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but I have it on good authority that Oregon probably won’t be able to make as many offers as usual. I wanted to bring this up again cause I could imagine myself freaking out after getting a rejection from what’s supposed to be a safety—though I’m not saying you will be rejected! So, it’s important to remember that they may need to be more selective than normal. The reason I even found this out was that this prof had previously said I’d get into Oregon without a doubt if I applied... but that with this development, I shouldn’t be sure.

I guess the same goes for any school—sometimes there will just be invisible factors like that, and you don’t know if a result really says anything about your merit as a candidate.

Not applying to Oregon but thank you for mentioning this. I'm sure it will ease the anxiety of a lot of people who applied there lol. People gotta realize that there is a lot of factors going on, and that is why its best to apply to many schools.

I emailed the grad program coordinator at Cornell because my application was missing an item and they posted a note. She said most notifications will go out this month, but she said that late February, so yes, we can expect to hear back this month at the very least.

True. There are many factors including faculty who go on sabbatical and can’t accept new students. Or existing PhD candidates who don’t finish their research in time so the advisors are tied up... also if it’s everyone’s safety then it sorta becomes competitive!

Same. Although Emory is super competitive for its ranking - they advertise the fact that only 6 or 7 students enroll each year.

Yeah. Some guy from my school got into there a few years ago but after he finished his masters. I would imagine that they tend to accept students with master's degrees.

The grad director at George Washington mailed me saying I should get an official offer soon. This was one of my top choices (as I'm quite inclined towards knot theory right now). Pretty excited. This forum has helped a lot. Thanks guys.

I got an e-mail today saying that they are planning on admitting me, saying that it'll take 1-2 weeks before I get a formal offer.

If you are applying for number theory, then it is very competitive. Someone on here a few years back got into Berkeley but rejected from Emory for NT.

I would advise against withdrawing your application yet. You might be waitlisted and still have a chance of getting admitted.

Ah I see Rödl does combinatorics. But he's kind of old. Also he's not Hungarian. So I wouldn't worry too much.

Well Ken Ono is gone now so like who cares right?

Nah it was for discrete mathematics. They have very strong people in discrete mathematics like Rodl.

I thought number theory was discrete math.
Ah I see Rödl does combinatorics. But he's kind of old. Also he's not Hungarian. So I wouldn't worry too much.
based and Hungarian pilled.

All Columbia posts on gradcafe are the same, there are no info about test scores or background. I feel like they are fake, but that's just my opinion.
bahaha I can confirm they are real

so now you know

(unless you think I'm a fake too)
Your profile / posts in general look like a joke so I wouldn't blame the poster for thinking that.

How were you notified?
Email, including the funding offer.
Is it safe to say if you didn’t get an offer today that you are waitlisted or rejected?
It's safe to assume that at least for top schools. One doesn't "survive a wave of rejections", it just means the rejection will come later.

Some schools do have second rounds though. I heard Michigan last year gave out some offers in March after the initial batch started declining their offers.

After extensive efforts I fail to understand the meaning of this message. Please clarify.

But jokes and fakes aren't the same. Usually the truth is the funniest thing of all.
