Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
Finally, someone has spoken up about the fact that requiring a long and superkind rejection emails is nothing but pleading for a hypocrisy. I'm tottaly signing up under the quoted post above.lambert wrote: ↑Tue Mar 24, 2020 3:16 pm
IMO it's better than the usual bullshit they write in their rejection letters. Every year was the hardest year ever to make decisions because they had the biggest pool ever and the most amazing students ever, or somesuch. Matter of fact is they chose someone over you and you have no way of knowing how close you were (unless you got waitlisted). Their last line "wish you the best in your future endeavors" sounds more like "alright **** off now". Can't blame them when they only care about ~ 20 people out of a pool of 500 applicants.

Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
While tempting, I would highly suggest that everyone avoid any speculation on this matter.utkarsh1729 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 27, 2020 10:22 amGiven the current covid scenario, what do you guys think is going to happen now?
At this time I think it is clear that there will be no change to the April 15th deadline.
As for the end of Summer and beginning of the semesters: It is still far to early to understand what our situation will be at that point, and we do not have the tools to accurately predict it. So I would suggest focusing on your current studies, hobbies, and maybe read an extra textbook, and we can reassess once we know more.
Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
I won’t speculate on the actual state of things in a few months, but the DGS’s I’ve spoken to directly about this had the following responses (paraphrased).utkarsh1729 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 27, 2020 10:22 amGiven the current covid scenario, what do you guys think is going to happen now?
Notre Dame: No one knows what will happen, but we expect to have somewhat unusual situations to account for. For example, one of our admits was a little stuck with housing for summer, since he will not have the work opportunity he expected and also can’t go home, so we plan to start paying his stipend early.
UT Austin: No one knows what will happen, but we are committed to continuing the program as normal, even though we aren’t sure exactly what shape that will take.
(It seemed like he was referring to the possibility of, say, having remote classes at first.)
Granted, these are both schools with pretty large endowments. I have the feeling of wanting to get whatever specifics I can in writing.
Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
To add, I asked Dr. Perutz as well, he specifically said that there is no confirmation of the April 15th date being moved, but he has heard talk of it possibly occurring. We will have to wait and see, I suppose.asterac wrote: ↑Sat Mar 28, 2020 1:46 pmUT Austin: No one knows what will happen, but we are committed to continuing the program as normal, even though we aren’t sure exactly what shape that will take.utkarsh1729 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 27, 2020 10:22 amGiven the current covid scenario, what do you guys think is going to happen now?

A friendly reminder to please decline at places you aren’t going to attend, a lot of us are waiting on our miracles!!!

Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
If I recall correctly NYU sends mass waves of rejections, I saw a few on GradCafe. Does does mean if we haven't heard back there is still a chance?
Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
Since some people have already gotten wait lists, I assume they're admitting people only for unfunded masters at this point.

Good luck everyone shooting for NSF GRFP! Results may come out this week

Declined Notre Dame and UIC this weekend. Good luck, all.
Also, surprised by rejection from BU today. Not so suprised by rejection from Northwestern.

I withdrew my Purdue application 3/18, but I never heard a peep.

I was admitted to Texas A&M off of the waitlist this morning, so be on the lookout. The system is not updated, so it seems to be a one-by-one invite sort of deal.

Still waiting on Rice atm. Wish they wouldn't wait this close to the deadline, it's bad for my nerves

If anyone has been extended an NYU pure math offer but is leaning towards another program, pllleeeeaaassseeeee consider declining in advance of the common reply date. We on the NYU waitlist are real, desperate, flesh-and-blood people and would be forever in your debt

If you have been offered admission at UC Davis, UofUtah or USC and have decided not to go there, I would be grateful if you could kindly decline those offers as soon as possible. I have been waitlisted at these schools.
Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
If anyone has been accepted to UC Irvine or U Arizona and decided not to attend, I really appreciate if you could decline the offer as soon as possible. I have been waitlisted for those two programs, and I do not have a single offer yet.

Also on the waitlist train: Please decline any offers from Rice CAAM, Columbia APAM, Houston, or Brandeis, if you are not planning to attend. Many thanks!
Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
They aren't particularly articulate via email, so I can only assume since I have not been rejected yet. I did get official waitlist via email from Rice and Brandeis though, so anyone not planning to attend you know what to do

Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
I rejected UC Irvine. Hopefully, you get the spot.

Schauder

Anyone else who rejects a school they do not plan to attend will get one as well

Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
You got official waitlist email from Rice CAAM? I emailed the graduate coordinator (Latreece McKinney) and got this email:
We don’t have a waitlist and we have not sent out rejection letters, since our first round of offers have until April 15th to respond.
Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
I got: the first round of offers have been extended. We must now await the decision of those applicants for a 2nd round of offers to be made, but I cannot say if or when it will be made.mathsal wrote: ↑Tue Apr 07, 2020 9:25 pm

I guess I took the optimistic interpretation.

Yeah that was their first email to me. Then I asked if that meant I was effectively waitlisted. That's when they told me they did not have a waitlist. But it has been a couple of weeks. May be things have changed?

Same question, did you get an official waitlist from UCSD or are you just presuming that since you haven't been rejected that you are effectively waitlisted?pleasedecline wrote: ↑Tue Apr 07, 2020 10:52 amI'm on their waitlist for PhD math. Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
People who have offers from Indiana and do not plan to go there, please decline your offer. The grad director said he hadn't heard back from most of the "outstanding" applicants yet.
Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
Does anyone know whether Canadian universities abide by the April 15 resolution? They're not signatories, but might adhere to it (at least unofficially). I just wonder whether they might also wait for after April 15 to send out second round offers (and rejections)...

I didn't get any email from them that I was waitlisted. I just assumed because there have been at least two waves of rejections already.analysister wrote: ↑Tue Apr 07, 2020 11:06 pmSame question, did you get an official waitlist from UCSD or are you just presuming that since you haven't been rejected that you are effectively waitlisted?pleasedecline wrote: ↑Tue Apr 07, 2020 10:52 amI'm on their waitlist for PhD math. I am. I emailed them last night to inquire if they plan to make any additional offers. It is my top choice but if it's not going to happen I'd like to commit to another program now.pleasedecline wrote: ↑Wed Apr 08, 2020 12:07 pmAre you also without any update from UCSD pure math? Looking on previous forums on here and thegradcafe, there is very little evidence of them making additional offers in April. There seem to be one or two per year max. So I am not holding out much hope.
Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
Declined Davis today. Was sad to do it because I loved my visit there. If you end up getting admitted off the waitlist, feel free to ask me about the visit. (That goes for anyone else here, too.) I already wrote up a big thing of my impressions for someone else, so I'm happy to send you that or answer questions for which you might not get answers from, say, the grad coordinator or the website.oldtableaux wrote: ↑Tue Apr 07, 2020 8:35 amIf you have been offered admission at UC Davis, UofUtah or USC and have decided not to go there, I would be grateful if you could kindly decline those offers as soon as possible.
