It seems that I will be rejected from every school. Even university of Oregon, my utterly safe variant, says nothing, though one international applicant has already an offer.
I am also really banking on Oregon but they are not sending offers yet, are they?

There is an acceptance post on gradcafe so its possible they are sending offers today (or already have).

There’s still a lot of time between now and April 15. Things are only just getting started! I know schools have unofficial waitlists so it could be that you’re on one of those. Then it’s just a matter of waiting and seeing if enough people decline. Try not to worry :)

I wouldn’t say so. I don’t know if Notre Dame has an unofficial waitlist. It could be that they do, and you might not hear back for a while, like what I said above. I don’t know, past results in gradcafe may be able to help. Nothing’s certain until you hear back!

What’s the appropriate reaction for a masters student who gets rejected from their own school’s PhD program? [besides embarrassment obviously  ]
I am in a similar situation. My school doesn’t have many master students (in fact only me still surviving this academic year) so I don’t have many examples to compare. However, I know a master student last year, who is much better than me, got all schools rejected, including my own school. By the way, do you need to apply PhD the same as others, so a different procedure?

This year is a bit behind I think. Since most of the postdoc hiring is between Feb 2 to Feb 7, many phd offers should come after prob next week or so.

Eh, I had sent an email a few days back inquiring when the department was planning to send out their initial offers. I got the reply to that email today. That's all.

Yea, the application is evaluated like any external application. It must be that they have an old low mGRE on file which they automatically attached to my application. I couldn’t retake...

I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but I have it on good authority that Oregon probably won’t be able to make as many offers as usual. I wanted to bring this up again cause I could imagine myself freaking out after getting a rejection from what’s supposed to be a safety—though I’m not saying you will be rejected! So, it’s important to remember that they may need to be more selective than normal. The reason I even found this out was that this prof had previously said I’d get into Oregon without a doubt if I applied... but that with this development, I shouldn’t be sure.

I guess the same goes for any school—sometimes there will just be invisible factors like that, and you don’t know if a result really says anything about your merit as a candidate.

Not applying to Oregon but thank you for mentioning this. I'm sure it will ease the anxiety of a lot of people who applied there lol. People gotta realize that there is a lot of factors going on, and that is why its best to apply to many schools.

I emailed the grad program coordinator at Cornell because my application was missing an item and they posted a note. She said most notifications will go out this month, but she said that late February, so yes, we can expect to hear back this month at the very least.

True. There are many factors including faculty who go on sabbatical and can’t accept new students. Or existing PhD candidates who don’t finish their research in time so the advisors are tied up... also if it’s everyone’s safety then it sorta becomes competitive!

Yeah. Some guy from my school got into there a few years ago but after he finished his masters. I would imagine that they tend to accept students with master's degrees.

It's safe to assume that at least for top schools. One doesn't "survive a wave of rejections", it just means the rejection will come later.

Some schools do have second rounds though. I heard Michigan last year gave out some offers in March after the initial batch started declining their offers.
