Congrats. One school (with funding) is all that's required to get rid of the unease in our minds.SKS2s17fa wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2020 7:38 pmGood news for me, I just received an offer from the applied math department in my school, though it was the safest place and I want to study pure math (geometry related). UCLA pure math admitted me recently, so there is still hope!

I didn’t apply to any masters programs or even check any boxes on PhD apps saying I’d consider a masters if rejected, but I’d do one at Michigan in a heartbeat if it was funded. Let us know what happens!nicole2 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2020 2:32 pmI received a call from Ann Arbor today, and Google says the phone number belongs to UMichigan. So I called them back and asked about the status, and was told that they wanted to schedule a 15-30 minute interview over Skype.
After we decided on the date and time, I was asked if I am interested to enroll in their Master's program.
So what should I be expecting from the interview, and is it a bad sign that they're gauging my interest of getting a Masters instead of a Ph.D?
I’d also be interested to hear about the Minnesota interview/if they ask you about a masters as well.

It's probably still to earlier to consider ... an interview doesn't mean an acceptance right?asterac wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2020 11:14 pmI didn’t apply to any masters programs or even check any boxes on PhD apps saying I’d consider a masters if rejected, but I’d do one at Michigan in a heartbeat if it was funded. Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
I had two interviews for a PhD. The first "interview" was me interviewing the school. They did not ask me a single question other than if I wanted to do pure or applied math and made me ask them questions for over half an hour. It felt much more like a sales pitch and them gauging my interest. At the end of the interview, they told me to expect an offer, which I eventually did get. My other interview was much more formal. They asked me questions like what area of math am I most interested in and why, give a famous theorem I like, and explain my research in more depth. And half way through it became a sales pitch and them trying to gauge my interest in their offer and was told I would be given an offer. I don't think most schools will ask you technical questions about math since that sounds more like a oral exam rather than an interview.nicole2 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 1:50 amIt's probably still to earlier to consider ... an interview doesn't mean an acceptance right?asterac wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2020 11:14 pmI didn’t apply to any masters programs or even check any boxes on PhD apps saying I’d consider a masters if rejected, but I’d do one at Michigan in a heartbeat if it was funded. Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
I wonder if I should follow up with schools that had a January deadline on the current status of my application. It's only been 5-6 weeks since I submitted the application so it might be too early to follow up. But on the other hand, they've sent out some acceptances in the last 2 weeks. So that's just making me curious.
Has anyone tried emailing UCSB, Vanderbilt, UI Chicago, or Ohio State to ask for an update on the status? If so, what did response did you get?

Same here. I’m curious too and I’ve decided to politely send an email to staff remember that coordinates the graduate program/admissions process for some schools.finite wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 3:12 amI wonder if I should follow up with schools that had a January deadline on the current status of my application. Ohio State hinted that they are going to make another round somewhere between now and the end of the month, then waitlist or rejection notices will be sent out.finite wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 3:12 amI wonder if I should follow up with schools that had a January deadline on the current status of my application. Since you've gotten into UCLA, your credentials is similar if not better than the couple other people that got into UCLA on the main thread. So, my miles may vary.

Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
At this point I just want a timely rejection letter. I don’t want to get all distracted in April before finals with this...

I asked my professor this Tuesday (I'm a current student), he said they have yet to make any decision for pure math.

You guys were right, the interview was about my future plans and research areas.
They said to expect an offer by the end of next week.

Thanks guys. I didn't ask if I am getting funding, I probably should have.
Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
It's a PhD not a masters. My Michigan interview is tomorrow.
Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
Graduate Center sometimes offers PhD's that have a tution waiver but no stipend.
Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
I know two people that got in Oregon State and Washington State last year w/o funding.

Omg, I have applied to Stony Brook and there is so much stupid spam sent from Stony Brook emails. And I cannot unsubscribe because I am waiting for the decision from the school. Every single spam triggers me over and over again because I think that is a final decision. For example, I have just received

Another Columbia APAM decision on grad cafe, guess it means they sent another round of offers? Pretty much going to assume it's a rejection at this point.

Did anyone get fellowship funding from LSU? If so, what kind of fellowship?

Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
Does anyone know if 2300 USD per month is enough for living expenses (food, accomodation, etc. ) In Illinois, Chicago?
Also are there are any other expenses ( such as healthcare) that I should consider?

Re: Fall 2020 Sweat Thread
Hope you got something now. I recieved a email from Utah saying they are highly impressed but this year they have fewer positions so they have to put me on waitlist. I'm not sure if it means I'm high on waitlist, but I hope so and am willing to wait.

I'm in the same boat. We need a forum for people without admissions. At least another thread named "Fall 2020 SuperSweat Thread"
