Undergrad Institution: UW-Madison
Major(s): Mathematics

GPA: 3.85 ish
Position in Class: Near the top with respect to math
Type of Student: Domestic male

GRE Scores:
Q: 800 (94%)
V: 500 (63%)
W: 4.5 (67%)
M: 650 (51%) (first attempt), 700 (63%) (second attempt)

Program Applying: Pure Math

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Was a grader for an advanced
undergraduate logic course. Tutored a group of Uganda's in Algebra.

Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I'm an Air Force veteran (but I don't think that necessarily "helps"), tutored the Uganda's in Algebra while in Iraq. 6 grad classes (Measure Theory, Functional Analysis, Complex Analysis, Algebra I & II, Differential Manifolds). Had 4.0 in all classes (including graduate classes ever since I left the Air Force).

Applying to Where:

UW Madison - Accepted (2/26). Financial details to follow. Attending! (2/28).
Purdue - Accepted (2/24). Teacher Assistantship 16K/yr. Declined (3/8).
Texas A&M - Accepted (2/16). Teacher Assistantship - 16.6K/yr. Declined (3/8).
Ohio State - Accepted (3/9). Teacher Assistantship - 16.5K/yr. Declined (3/8).
Rutgers U, New Brunswick - Rejected (3/11).
SUNY Stony Brook - Rejected (3/28).
Notre Dame - Rejected (4/14).
Indiana Bloomington - Waitlisted (2/25). Withdrawn (2/28).
Washington University of St Louis - Withdrawn (4/14).

Reflection: I feel fortunate that I had a professor at Madison who wanted to work with me, and I feel that this had increased my chances for getting in significantly. Also, I have noticed that it is much easier to get into Big State Public Schools as opposed to the smaller private schools; regardless of their relative reputation. All-in-all, given my acceptance/rejection ratio, I feel that I had chosen an appropriate selection of schools for the competitiveness of my application.

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Summer internship programming for a defense contractor, probably not relevant
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help:

I started applications before finding out my MGRE score. Having received it, I'm pretty sure the top half of this list is out of reach for me.

Undergrad Institution: small liberal arts college, not well known
Major(s): Math and Physics
Minor(s): NA
GPA: 3.66 (2.0 first semester, 4.0 last two years)
Position in Class: not sure. near the top, but not too near given that first semester?
Type of Student: domestic white male

GRE Scores:
Q: 780 (89%)
V: 630 (91%)
W: 5.0 (84%)
M: 790 (81%)

TOEFL Score: NA

Program Applying: Pure Math

Research Experience: One lightweight paper presented and published in algebra. A good amount of assisting in physics research.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Departmental awards in math and physics, award at regional MAA conference for presentation, general good student stuff.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: physics TA, calculus tutor.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: attended BSM.

Applying to Where:

Dalhousie - Accepted 2/3 by e-mail. No funding.
NC State - Accepted 2/4 by e-mail after I missed a call. TA + summers.
Arkansas - Accepted 2/24 by e-mail. TA + Fellowship.
Dartmouth - Rejected 2/28 by e-mail.
UIC - Accepted 3/1 by e-mail. TAship. Attending
Tulane - Accepted 3/4 by e-mail. TAship.
Michigan State - Rejected 3/4 by e-mail.
Rochester - Accepted 3/4 by e-mail. TAship.
Oregon - Accepted 3/8 by e-mail. TA + summers.
Vanderbilt - Rejected 3/13 by e-mail.
Seattle - Rejected 3/22 by e-mail.
Northeastern - Accepted 3/30 by e-mail to check website. No word from department itself about anything including funding.
Notre Dame - Rejected 4/14 by e-mail.
UC-Davis - Rejected 5/6 by website. "Not competitive with other applicants because of scholarship below that of admitted applicants."

Retrospective: I was happy with my choices, and I'm pumped about going to UIC. I think that maybe I thought I would be more competitive than I was, but I still got into a couple of my top choices so it's all good.

If I could do it over again, I'd save myself some cash and not apply to Davis since they didn't even give me a decision until it was completely pointless, and an insulting one at that.

Ditching the idea of being a lawyer and retaking the math gre 5 years after I'd had any math was a big thrill. I'm still excited that I did as well as I did on the test, and I'm more than ready for the next step. To Chicago!

@ toopham: I would advise to reconsider your choices. UCLA, Berkeley, Michigan and most likely UWash will not seriously consider your application given your GRE and undergrad degree. It's highly unlikely your MSc degree will make enough of a difference to change their mind. You really should apply to a much wider range of schools or you run the risk of losing out alltogether.

smartiful wrote:@ toopham: I would advise to reconsider your choices.

Retrospective:
I'm happy to fulfill my dream of studying abroad. I'm not an outstanding person as my marks show; however, I persist in the path to be a mathematician. Therefore, I got a lot help from my advisor and other professors, which is the main reason why I can win these admissions. In my point of view, the connection with where you apply is the most important. Especially, the private recommendation is more powerful than the formal LOR used in application.

As a part of admission process and final valuation of the applications, there are many opportunities are introduced by many colleges and related institutions to improve the condition of the first generation student and that always results in achievement too. Such scholarships and other similar opportunities need to be informed well to the first generation students in order to make it effective program.

Program Applying: PhD in Applied Math (Bio/Neuroscience) and dual MD

Research Experience: None

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: None

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: freelance musician and symphonic substitute trumpeter ... but nothing too formal in math. I tutored physics, chemistry, and biology for a while, but no math specifically.

Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: In my spare time since 2004, I have either audited or taught myself the bulk the undergraduate mathematics and neuroscience curriculum offered at most major universities. I've done this via buying math/bio/chem/neuroscience/etc... books and reading them cover to cover (while doing every problem in it, if applicable). I watched a few of these courses online via YouTube or the school's extension division. Most of these were full courses recorded from top universities in the U.S. (Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Harvey Mudd College, Penn State, Berkeley, etc...) and the rest (topology, bifurcations, differential geometry, neuroscience, proteins and enzymes, etc...) I audited from my fiancee's undergraduate institution (where I am getting the bulk of my recommendations).

Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: My fiancee is pursuing a dual PhD in medical anthropology and a masters in library science at the same school I am applying.

More details to come ... but I just thought I'd share the first part of my experience. In a few months, I'll update when I see more of what's up. I'm going for a tour / interview in mid August 2011 during the same weekend as Debra's orientation (she is starting grad school this Fall but I won't be starting until Fall '12 ... but we decided to start my application process early since it's rolling admission and I'm a unique case aka no formal study of math / pre-medicine).

*on a random note: the head of the department requested that I bring my trumpet when I come for my visit, lol ... there may be some Mahler 3 being heard in the math department that day if they put me on the spot.

**edited for 3-4 typos ... one being kinda major, that's what you get at 230am.
