Undergrad Institution: Public, T15
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): Chemistry
GPA: 4.0
Type of Student: DWM

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 163 (82%)
V: 163 (93%)
W: 4.5 (81%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: April '19: 780 (75%)
Sept '19: Lower lol :?

TOEFL Score: N/A

Program Applying: Pure Math Ph.D (Geometric Analysis/Differential Geometry), maybe some teaching/D.A. programs?

Research Experience: 1 year Geometric Analysis research at my university (paper to be written, eventually), 1 REU resulting in a paper and a talk, 3 years Physical Chem/Biochem research, if that counts? I at least got a paper from it.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Awarded $3000 funding from my university to conduct math research, two-time Goldwater nominee, GPA awards, honor societies (PBK, etc.)
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Wrote a ~350 page solution manual for my Calc III professor's book, TA for an advanced General Chemistry course. Lectured for the grad topology class here once.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: 6 Math grad classes by time of applying (Analysis, Topology, Differential Geometry), 9 by graduation. Connections to Princeton: grad students there, one letter writer has a strong relationship w/faculty, attended Princeton's Summer School for Geometric Analysis + have been in correspondence with some faculty since. One famous letter writer (but, using as a fourth, when possible) from UChicago. One well-known writer from my institution, "strong" letter (really, who's to say how strong letters are?).
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I was a double major in Biochem, hence all the chemistry. I went pretty far in it (1 grad Chem class), almost completed the major. Decided to drop it to a minor to focus on math. Because of this, I might be a weaker applicant (less math courses), but I did skip into some graduate ones so hopefully that helps?

Undergrad Institution: Biggest public uni in my country
Major(s):Pure Mathematics
Minor(s):N/A
GPA:3,36
Type of Student: International Male from Colombia

Graduate Institution: Biggest public uni in Mexico
Master Degree in Pure Math
GPA:3,85

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 159 (70%)
V: 153 (60%)
W: 3.0 (15%) This is gonna be bad
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 780 (75%) :?

I've seen most people here usually score better in the quantitative reasoning part of the general GRE than in the mGRE, I wonder whether this will be detrimental in my applications.

Program Applying: Pure Math PhD Geometry/Topology

Research Experience: When I was an undergraduate a professor and I tried to prove some fact in model theory but we couldn't get anywhere after a couple of months. In my master thesis I gave a nice(but trivial I think) proof of a theorem in hyperbolic geometry which is useful in low-dimensional topology.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Won a general knowledge contest about all contents of my career as an undergraduate.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help:???
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I have a pretty decent account in math.stackexchange, most of the score comes from answers I've given, mostly in pure math.

Applying to:

Match?
Ohio State(OSU): Waitlisted(2/20)Declined offer(3/17)
Indiana University at Bloomington(IU): Accepted(3/4)Accepted offer(3/17)

Safe(I hope)
Utah Rejected(3/3)

Edit: Indiana was my first choice, so I'm pretty happy for being accepted there. I think an important factor was sending a not so formal email to the professor I want to work with; I also sent him my math.stackexchange profile which I think helped a lot, but I think what I did on my master thesis and the recommendation letters did the most part.

Good luck with your applications.

Undergrad Institution: Large Public
Major(s): Mathematics, Chemistry
Minor(s): Computer Science
GPA: 3.74/4.00 (4.00/4.00 Math)
Type of Student: Domestic Asian Male

GRE Revised General Test:
Q/V/W: 170/169/4.5, 170/166/5.5, 169/166/5.5

GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 870, 930 for October

Program Applying: Pure Math - Algebraic Combinatorics, Algebraic Geometry, Graph Theory.

Research Experience: Participated in 4 REUs with 5 papers total. Helped 2 different professor publish 3 other papers (my name on those publications) on graph theory and combinatorics, also completed senior paper/thesis on algebraic combinatorics. During my gap year (this year), I have submitted 2 papers on a.g.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Putnam honorable mention once and three times non-trivial double-digit scores. Made USAMO 3 times (last one in senior year was pretty close to the cut-off for summer camp, since my score is <5 points lower than a friend from AoPS that went to IMO) and AIME twice 8/9th grade(not counting the USAMOs of course). Dean's list, couple university and national scholarships (one major one).
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Nothing special to note other than REUs and competitions. Never made it to IMO so probably not anywhere as impressive as them. Almost interned at a bank but glad I didn't that might make my app look bad who knows.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Currently taking a gap year and doing research on abelian varieties.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: 4 really strong letters, hopefully. One of them is a fields medalist. I counted 10 graduate courses, straight As across math curriculum.

Applying to Where: (Color use here is welcome)

Minor(s): CS
GPA: 4.0
Type of Student: Domestic

GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 840 (84%)

Program Applying: Pure Math

Research Experience: Top REU, two algebra preprints. Advisor seems to think they're pretty good; planning on submitting one to a conference.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Top Scholarship from school; typical Dean's List stuff.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Tutor for physics 2 semesters, grader for both physics and math (3 semesters).
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Think I have strong letters, two of which are from well-known researchers, the other from my REU research advisor. Taken both the year-long algebra and topology graduate sequences, and probably will graduate with a total of 7-8 graduate courses.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Also have some physics background (started out as a physics major, switched as a sophomore).

Applying to Where: (Color use here is welcome)

Reach
Chicago - rejected
Berkeley - rejected
Columbia - rejected

Reach/Match
Michigan - rejected
Cornell - accepted
UT Austin - ghosted
U Wisconsin-Madison - accepted
U Minnesota - ghosted

Figuring out the safety schools is the hardest part for me... If anyone has any suggestions for really large schools in the top 25-40 range, that have a lot of algebraists/geometers/topologists, would love to hear it. Applying mainly to large schools because I don't yet know what I want to research.

My interest field is PDE, numerical analysis, particularly numerical solution of pde and dynamic system, since i have backgroud in CS, so computational math track could be a choice.
I wish i can get some advice for a program list (matching schools), thanks!

Brown (phd applied)

sort of reach:
UBC (master)
Mcgill (master)

U of victoria (master)

Honestly, i am not sure if this list fits best, as i did not investigate much safety options and my previous application indicates this whole process is filled with uncertainty anyway;

How do you guys think of this list? is this realistic? do you guys have other ideal programs? appreciate it!

For future prospective graduate students with a similar profile to mine, I would recommend applying to large state schools, since they seem to be the most willing to accept domestic students coming from "unknown" undergraduate schools and/or students that do not yet have specific research interests.

Why did my post get deleted?? I posted here earlier with my profile and now it is gone. I don't understand why it was deleted and why I was not informed. Did somebody think I was trolling? I was not; everything I posted was and is true (except that I've chosen not to apply to one of the nine schools I originally listed). I understand that I stated some things in a flamboyant manner (e.g. with a lot of smilies) or without context (e.g. devoting this semester to Russian armwrestling) but it truly is part of my profile.

I request an explanation from the moderators and that my post be reinstated (if possible; I'd prefer not to type it up again).
How disappointing...a week later and no response of any kind. I guess I'll have to retype everything. I'm going to reiterate that everything in this post is true, except that I may not end up applying to Rutgers. If some moderator has a problem with this or doesn't believe me, they should let me know and I can provide references if necessary.

Overall, nothing too surprising. Looks like my estimates in terms of reach etc. were mostly accurate. I think fit played a big part. Looking back, I probably could have applied to fewer schools and done more research before creating my school list. I didn't plan to go to math graduate school until midway through my junior year so I feel very fortunate to have still ended up with several options that I was very happy with.

Undergrad Institution: State school, AMS Group I but not top
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): Computer Science
GPA: 3.88 (3.92 on December applications :P). We get extra for A+s, so converted GPAs: 3.8 (3.83)
Type of Student: Domestic White Female

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 167 (90%)
V: 168 (98%)
W: 4.5 (81%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 620 (42%)

Program Applying: Pure Math PhD

Research Experience: One funded summer of research at home institution. Advisor was very impressed. I didn't try to publish or present tho
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Several university scholarships, including awards from the math department
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Lots of teaching-related experience, including tutoring, hiring & training tutors for my school, multiple terms as a TA, and course design & teaching at a coding camp
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: - Really strong coding background
- Wrote a custom paragraph for every school
- 3 mixed grad/undergrad sequences, 1 properly grad-level sequence, a few readings
- Good recommenders: one famous in his field, one early in his career but has won a big award, one the department head (my advisor).
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I have something for which I get academic accommodations, but I only got officially diagnosed after my GRE attempts, so I didn't get extra time or anything. That may help explain my low-ish mGRE score, but I only explicitly disclosed the diagnosis to Duke, I think. I have other substantial things to say in terms of diversity statements, but I was ambivalent about those too. Hedged my bets and only submitted them with January applications that had a specific spot for them. Also, I worked full-time before starting college and leveraged that to argue that academia is an informed career choice for me.

Applying to: (alphabetical within categories)

Reach
Duke (Dec) - Accepted! (1/30) / $24.3K + $6.5K annual summer research fellowship / Declined (4/15)
Northwestern (Dec) - Rejected (3/28)
Wisconsin (Dec) - Rejected (2/3)

Match?
Austin (Dec) - Accepted! (2/21) / $21.5K + $7.2K summer fellowship / Upgraded: $34K + no teaching first year (3/4) ATTENDING!!!
Boston C - Rejected (4/14)
Boston U - Rejected (3/30)
Davis - Accepted (1/29) / $22.6K + $2K first summer fellowship / Declined (4/8)
Notre Dame - Accepted (2/5) / $25.6K twelve-month stipend / Declined (3/27)
Purdue - Withdrawn (3/18) / Asked if still interested (4/9) / Declined (4/9)
UIC (Dec) Accepted (2/14) / $20.6K / Declined (3/30)
UMN--Twin Cities (Dec) - Rejected (4/20)

Safety
Iowa - Withdrawn (3/18)
UNL - Accepted (2/18) / $17K / Declined (2/25)

Notes for future applicants:
- Everyone who has accepted me has offered a funded visit, albeit some with less airfare coverage than others.
- Funding is a 9-month TA-ship except where otherwise specified. Amount of teaching varies considerably between offers.
- I submitted my GRE scores everywhere.
- I shot a little lower than my advisor said I should and regretted it somewhat. If you have an experienced advisor, trust them. Seek second opinions from your other letter writers instead of driving yourself nuts on this website. If you're scared, add some safeties, but don't cut off the top of where profs who know you are comfortable recommending you, particularly not if they know people there.

I plan to write up a longer advice post at some point. Will link if I make it.

Undergrad/Master's Institution: 2 years at Unknown Public School before transferring to Michigan
Major(s): Mathematics
GPA/Percentage: 4.0 major GPA at previous school; 3.73 major GPA at current school. If you take the average, the major GPA will be 3.87
Type of Student: International Asian male

GRE Revised General Test:

V: 149 (46%)
W: 3 (15%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:

TOEFL Score: Waived

Program Applying: Pure Math Ph.D. Interested in algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, representation theory, and algebraic number theory

Research Experience: One REU at Michigan, did some trivial calculations of sheaf cohomology, and finally got a result about local cohomology of a certain kind of Spechtral module. It is a problem in representation stability.

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Top participant in Putnam competition when I was a freshman.

information about personal history: I try to learn serious math in my junior year, before that, I only know calculus and linear algebra. It is a pretty hard time to keep up, and I spend all the time on math the last year. Since I only have one year before applying, and I mainly take courses in algebra. I just worry that my application will be thrown away by the admission committee. I did take complex analysis and combinatorics.

Other information: Pretty Mediocre background, and I guess the only thing left to say is my recommendation letters. My three recommenders are pretty famous mathematicians in their areas. One works in commutative algebra, I took one topic course (integral closure) and two reading courses with him in commutative algebra. The only thing I am sure of is that he thinks I am hard-working and careful on details. One is my REU advisor. He has aborad research interests that you can't tell how much math he knows. The only thing I am sure of is that he told another professor who is the strongest algebraic geometer that I am an expert in this stuff (algebraic geometry). The third professor works in algebraic topology. The only thing I am sure of is that he believes that I knew some deep things in algebraic geometry and commutative algebra. Even though I don't know any algebraic topology, he still gives me an A in the second year grad algebraic topology class. He thinks I am good I don't why, and he is a pretty nice guy.

Research Experience: Year long research project in the mathematical developments of string theory (more of a reading course, didn't get anything published since my advisor was very sick and died), started 'research' in cluster algebra/mathematical physics last semester, except I need to learn a lot of algebra before doing original research
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean's list, not much else
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: I've been working with the Trans Lifeline for 3 years and train new operators, so I have lots of teaching experience, just not in math or physics. I also made some shiny programs for statistics students last fall and will start work as a math tutor this spring (too late unfortunately).
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I will have completed 5 grad courses, and am transgender

Applying to Where: I'm applying to places with funded master's and preferably research in algebraic geometry or mathematical physics
Super reach
UIUC- Accepted 27/03! but probably no funding
Match?
Saint Louis University- Accepted 19/02 with funding!
University of Kentucky
University of Tennessee - Accepted 02/03 and awaiting funding
Ohio University
University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee
Safety/Unranked programs
University of Missouri- St Louis
Depaul University- Accepted 06/03 and awaiting funding
Portland State University- Accepted 06/02 and awaiting funding
SIU Carbondale- Accepted 12/02 with likely funding
Hopefully I get accepted to a decent amount of schools so I can show students with a low gpa have options

Undergrad Institution:[Greece's largest public university]
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): None
GPA:4.00/4.00 (10.00 out of 10.00 in my uni)
Type of Student: International (Greek), Male

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170 (96%)
V: 158 (80%)
W: 3.5 ( :( ) (39%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M:900 (94%)

TOEFL Score: (107 = R28/L30/S23/W26)

Program Applying: Pure Math (Mainly interested in Ergodic Theory, Analysis, Topology and Geometry.)

Research Experience: I have published two papers regarding universality properties (Complex analysis). The first one was a standard undergraduate student-professor paper (published it a with a professor I met in a graduate course). The second one was solo-authored and advanced-generalized the results of the first one.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Have been participating in competitions since my first year in uni, achieving a fair amount of medals, the most important of them being 2 gold imc medals.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Have made a seminar talk concerning my papers, and some other lectures for the grad course of complex analysis.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I have taken 4 grad courses so far, three of them are regarded as advanced ones (7 grad courses counting the ones I aim to take this semester). One of them that was immensely interesting was ergodic theory. The professor knows me well so I expect a really good recommendation letter. Another recommender is the professor I co-published my first paper with. Therefore we have worked together and I believe I will get a very strong letter from him as well. My last recommender is a professor I had in many undergraduate courses. ( He also knows me well.)
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I am graduating at 3.5 years instead of 4, but I dont think that this makes a difference.
