Applications that ask for potential advisors

Post by chrisps1992 » Sat Dec 07, 2019 4:07 pm

What is the general advice when it comes to these types of applications? I have come across several that have a specific section asking you to list some potential professors you would like to work with. Most of these say it is optional, but I feel like if you leave it blank they might think you did not care to research their school, on the other hand I don’t want to pigeonhole myself to these specific people if it means my application will be seen by fewer eyes.

I think you should definitely list professors. I don't see any reason to expect this to cause fewer people to read it. The only plausible effect I can imagine is the committee reading it and sending your profile to the professors you list if they want their input.
