Deferring Grad School?

TLDR: Has anyone successfully deferred admission to grad school? and if so how did you do it?
Background:
I am a double major in math and physics, and I will be attending a one-year Master's program in Physics next fall (applied in fall 2019). I also applied to math PhD programs (applied in fall 2019) and got some offers. My hope is to have the PhD offer deferred so that I can go to the one-year program and then come back.
Ive read in some schools' policies that they accept under "academic-related circumstances." Do you think going to a physics program is an appropriate reason for deferring a math PhD program? Also, who should I consult this to first (during open house)?
