Interview experiences?

Post by PluvianSprite » Sat Jun 20, 2020 4:18 am

These seem to be hard to find...

Past applicants, what have been your interview experiences for PhD applications?

How technical are such interviews?

I plan to submit applications in the future, but at that point I will have been working for some years, so I'm unlikely to be at my historical best (mathematically) unless I dedicate some time for revision.

I'm mainly curious about Oxbridge PhD program interviews, but also happy to hear experiences from other UK/EU or US programs.

As far as I am concerned, most U.S. programs don't have technical interviews or even most do not have an interview. U.K. programs do have technical interviews, on the other hand. You may need to be prepared to do some problems during the interviews. I don't have experiences though. Just heard from others.

Not all - I interviewed for Leeds recently, and it was not technical beyond "explain your previous research to us". Certainly no asking to solve calculus questions.
