Re: Fall 2021 Sweat Thread
Does anyone know the deal with Stony Brook? I saw some acceptances there today on gradcafe. I know someone who interviewed and then was waitlisted. I haven't heard anything. Has anyone heard if they're done?
Re: Fall 2021 Sweat Thread
I am pretty sure that all good news (wl & offer) has been sent out according to Sam’s email.

Nope, but I am afraid everyone that has not been extended an offer or placed on waitlist does not have a chance any more :^( Sam told me that they’ve made all decisions. In my understanding there is not going to be a second wave of offers.crystal_math wrote: ↑Thu Mar 11, 2021 11:30 amDid they say interviews are pre–requisite for admissions?H.H wrote: ↑Thu Mar 11, 2021 11:21 amI just got an email from Sam saying that all decisions have been finalized yesterday. They're still doing interviews over the next few days, so it's safe to assume they haven't released all decisions, if any. Dunno if the interviews are being continued after this week or if they're prerequisite for admission.

For Stony Brook, it is not true that decisions have been made on all applications. I received an email indicating mine did not yet have a decision.
Re: Fall 2021 Sweat Thread
Anyone heard from UT Austin CSEM?

Re: Fall 2021 Sweat Thread
As a person who posted an acceptance on GradCafe in February, it’s not fake.quanticbolt wrote: ↑Thu Mar 11, 2021 7:39 pmI poked a different Toronto email. They are reviewing applications and decisions will be sent later this month or in early April. I actually suspect that based on the content of the reply I received that the postings from February on gradcafe are fake.
I actually wish they didn’t do so early, as they set me a deadline for March 19 and I still haven’t heard from some places. But yeah, I believe my offer is sort of exceptional for some reasons I don’t want to disclose.

Just wanted to post here asking that if you were admitted to UT Austin and prefer another place you were admitted to, please decline! Waitlisted and crossing my fingers.
Re: Fall 2021 Sweat Thread
Has anyone got acceptance from the waitlist of Rutgers?
Re: Fall 2021 Sweat Thread
Got rejected by University of Michigan. There are about 850 applications for Math and AIM programs and they only accept 20 spots for both programs. This is such a rough year.

Out of curiosity, has anyone been waitlisted by Michigan? I haven't been, I just want to know if they've sent out waitlists yet.
Re: Fall 2021 Sweat Thread
Still hearing nothing from Courant. no rejection nor unfunded master. weird.
Stony Brook is also acting weird

As far as Stony Brook goes, it seems they may be sending rejections in groups. It looked like some rejections went out about 6 hours ago, and I received a rejection about 2 hours ago. That's not at all to say that you should expect a rejection, I'm just reporting what I observed.

I'm in the same position with Courant. When I emailed them last week, they gave me a generic response on the lines of 'We haven't made a final decision on your application, and will email you when we have done so'.

March 12 at 1:59 pm mountain time. I wish they could return application fee. But that is not possible. I paid $90 and they have 850 applicants. They earned approximately $90*850=$76500 application fees and the acceptance rate is roughly 2.5%.Albert_Eisenstein wrote: ↑Sun Mar 14, 2021 12:04 amSorry to hear this. US universities act like they are businesses. One of their goals is to earn money from students for sure. Make no sense to charge me $90 for reviewing my application for a minute or so. They often charge international students more money for application fee. I will call it a discrimination. They use about the same time to review an application from a domestic applicant vs an international applicant and yet they charge international students more money.

Re: Fall 2021 Sweat Thread
I agree with your point of the application fee being too high for just minor review. Also, the admissions staff keep us in the dark even when we ask them about the status of our application (I emailed several schools, all of which either ghosted me for a month, or responded with generic crap). Then there are schools like UCLA which provide no response and post rejections on the portal with no email notification. How can they charge $120 to 140 USD for such substandard review?lee_34 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 14, 2021 5:15 pmMarch 12 at 1:59 pm mountain time. I wish they could return application fee. Re: Fall 2021 Sweat Thread
So they didn't email you or send you a postal mail at all? You only found out the decision by logging into the portal? That's pretty bad. USD 120 is not an insane amount of money but it certain it's not a trivial amount of money. No wonder why so many are upset I would be mad too.Albert_Eisenstein wrote: ↑Mon Mar 15, 2021 12:00 amI agree with your point of the application fee being too high for just minor review. Is it just public schools or do you have similar experience with private schools?
EDIT: I want to point out that 76k is enough to fund one graduate student for a year with health insurance, assuming the department pays employer's tax AND pays the university for the full amount tuition billed. I doubt either applies.

Re: Fall 2021 Sweat Thread
I actually didn’t get rejected by UCLA yet, but they sent out a batch of rejections in the first week of March, and they did them all this way (no email to check the portal, just randomly uploading rejections letters on the portal). However, they have not responded to any of my mails right from November. I emailed them twice about the status of my application and they ghosted me. As far as your question about private schools, I haven’t faced something like this in private schools till date. I did email a couple of private schools with high app fees, and they gave me a shitty response of the lines ‘We still haven’t made a decision on your application’, even though this was a blatant lie (they have sent out all offers and waitlists, but not rejections.) I think the logic is that these schools want to send rejections all at once, and avoid responding to individual emails, since that would take more effort form them. I certainly get that, but I hate how they keep us in the dark regarding where they are in the process throughout. It almost feels like throwing your money down the drain. You make a good point about the amount of money they make from application fees. 76500 is no small amount for sure.pkzrd wrote: ↑Mon Mar 15, 2021 3:55 amSo they didn't email you or send you a postal mail at all? Finally turned down some spots today. I'm happy that my own process is drawing to a close, and I hope that someone else gets good news because of that!

Does anyone know why Northwestern is taking so long? They initially said mid-February, but last week they responded to my poke saying that the committee is still reviewing applications and that decisions will be made in the coming weeks. I wonder what's going on.

Re: Fall 2021 Sweat Thread
I had a phone conversation today with the DIrector of Graduate Studies. There are 20 slots available this year, they're contacting students in their shortlist and asking whether they're still interested.homotopysphere wrote: ↑Mon Mar 15, 2021 5:03 pmDoes anyone know why Northwestern is taking so long? Is anyone else feeling really fatigued of this admissions process? Just to share where I'm at, I have two offers that I'm like pretty happy with (honestly I feel grateful to have offers at all), but I'm also on three waiting lists, each of which I would prefer to my current offers. The prospects of possibly sitting and waiting for a whole nother month before committing somewhere is pretty daunting.

Has anyone been accepted to Tulane PhD and is considering attending? I'm interested if anyone possibly attending is hoping to study geometry/topology. I've heard bad things about the math department and I'm curious to hear anybody else's take on it.

I couldn't agree more. I have one offer that's okay, but I'm also on four waitlists, and making it through this for another month sounds impossible. If anyone made it into UIUC, Wisconsin-Madison, Johns Hopkins or Stony Brook and is planning on going elsewhere, please decline it.iliketopology wrote: ↑Tue Mar 16, 2021 12:53 pmIs anyone else feeling really fatigued of this admissions process? Contacted UMich and they told me that they're running a bit behind their anticipated schedule. They'll have final results in a day or two.

Does anyone have any information regarding the waitlist for Rutgers' PhD program? I was told that I am on a waitlist but they didn't give me any other information about it's length, whether it's ranked or not, etc. Would like to know for the sake of limiting my expectations.
Re: Fall 2021 Sweat Thread
Contact the director and ask for your rank on the waitlist and he will tell where you are very roughly. He told me I was about in the middle and the list is long.IdeallyRingless wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 8:56 amDoes anyone have any information regarding the waitlist for Rutgers' PhD program? I have heard a certain rumor that there is also a short waitlist but I haven’t been able to verify it at all.
