Re: 2021 REU Programs
It says somewhere on their website that they will try to release decisions by tomorrow.
Re: 2021 REU Programs
Has anyone got Duluth?
Re: 2021 REU Programs
Has anyone heard from SMALL (Diophantine Equations) yet? I know SMALL should probably have sent all offers but there seems to be no info on this particular project.
Re: 2021 REU Programs
Heard from a JMU REU mentor the other day saying that I was shortlisted, however havent heard from anywhere else. Has anyone heard from Clemson yet? I haven't heard much talk about it. I know acceptances for JMU are meant to come out the beginning of March and I am very worried...
Re: 2021 REU Programs
Not yet ... Anyone heard back from UChicago?
Re: 2021 REU Programs
Did you hear back from UChicago?Jmr324 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 6:39 pmEnded up applying to:
DIMACS (graph theory/algorithm projects)
UChicago REU (Mentioned interest in working with Laszlo Babai)
Yale SUMRY (Hypergraph container project)
Carnegie Mellon
GaTech (Probabilitistic combinatorics with Warnke)
Ohio State
Twin Cities
Maryland CS Reu
CUNY Baruch (graph theory and additive combinatorics)
Brown
For most of the programs above, I applied to projects relating to graph theory, combinatorics, theoretical computer science.
Year: Junior
Institution: Large public, not well-known for math.
GPA: 3.75
Letters: I submitted two letters for all of the programs I applied to. One of them is from my professor for undergrad analysis 1&2, where I got an A in both (he likes me so I think it will be a pretty good letter). My other letter is from my honors thesis advisor I have taken 4 classes with her (2 graduate-level), 1 independent study, and some research (we are finishing up a paper related to Ramsey theory).
Profile: By the time the REU takes place I will have completed: analysis 1&2, algebra 1&2, graph theory, combinatorics, graduate graph theory 1&2, graduate algorithm design & analysis (plus lower-level math courses). All A's in upper-level math courses, but some B's in lower-level math classes bc I was a lazy idiot. I am first-generation, which may help idk. I am hoping my strong-background in discrete math will help me get into REUs with projects in discrete math.

(Not the person you replied to) I have not heard from UChicago yet--they're still in class so I wouldn't expect any messages to come out for at least 3-4 more hours.Lucinda_a wrote: ↑Fri Feb 26, 2021 2:02 pmDid you hear back from UChicago?Jmr324 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 6:39 pmEnded up applying to:

I feel like the REUs this year have been more behind than usual in general.

Re: 2021 REU Programs
I haven’t heard anything yet, and nobody else I know who applied has. FWIW, here’s something a UChicago student said about when we might expect letters to go out, from two years ago: “Peter May is almost always slightly late. I would give him a week to mail out the results. I am also almost certain that he sends the acceptance emails one-by-one. So don’t be discouraged if a friend got in and you haven’t heard back, just give this 80 year old man some time.”

Oh okay, in that case thats a relief since as an international student I really only have hopes of getting into my home institution's REU (they have yet to even open applications) and UChicago.

Re: 2021 REU Programs
News on UChicago: I emailed Peter May to clarify some things on my application earlier this week. He got back to me this morning to let me know he received the information, and that I was unofficially accepted to the apprentice program. Some other details he told me worth sharing: there were >380 non-UChicago student applicants this year, which is why he is running late. He said official information, acceptances, etc. will most likely all go out by Monday.
I'm very excited to have been accepted. I will almost surely be attending.

I did not see a place on the application to formally indicate a specific project, and the offer did not reference a specific project.cauchycoffee wrote: ↑Sat Feb 27, 2021 1:07 pmWhich project, and congrats!sharkovsky wrote: ↑Sat Feb 27, 2021 12:59 pmI was accepted yesterday.Yagami1728 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 27, 2021 10:24 amHas anyone heard back from ICERM yet? They just emailed me. It looked like just a generic email sent to all people who we're rejected.

To whoever the kind person that just posted:
Thank you so much for sharing. It’s very likely that I will probably be rejected by all the programs I’ve applied to. Seeing everyone getting accepted to nice programs, it honestly kinda feels like the end of the world to me : P
Thanks for putting some perspectives into the picture. This week (and next week, I imagine) has not been a great week because of all the rejections. Neither has it been helpful for my mental health. I guess it’s nice to see someone “from the future” come back and tell me that my math career will not be over just because I didn’t get into some REUs : )
