grad program suggestions?

Post by asdfghj » Fri Mar 05, 2021 10:13 am

Graduating this december with a major in applied mathematics, minor in some tech major(non-coding-related). I'm a transfer from a community college, so I had to start from calc 3 when I first got to my current univ.
GPA 3.96, expecting 4.0 this semester.
Planning on taking 2 grad courses next semester.
A class is research related and will be attending an REU this summer. TAed two classes.

I've been thinking about masters in data science or bussiness analytics, and phd in applied math, however, I don't think my profile is strong enough to get me into any phd programs. Any suggestions?

Your profile is definitely strong enough to get into PhD programs, especially if you cast a broad net (provided you can get good letters, including one from your REU advisor). Don't second guess yourself!

I don't know if I can get good letters. I for sure can get some positive letters from professors whom I took a class or two with, but I highly doubt that I can get very good letters since they don't know me well. I most likely will have a very positive letter from a post-doc and one positive letter from a mathematician who's well-known in his area. The third one depends on how the REU goes.

I'm not an applied math person, so take this with a grain of salt, but I would recommend checking out the UC Davis applied math phd program. It's my impression that it's a pretty strong program with a wide breadth of interests, but I think admission is less competitive than some other programs (perhaps other UC schools attract more applications).
So as I think someone else said, cast a wide net and apply to some top top schools, but also apply to some quality schools that are less competitive.
