Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I'm domestic? I have 4 recommendations letters. I don't think in-state schools will give me any more chances than an out-of-state school per my parent's residency. And I don't think my parents' alum school matters. So no, in short.
Applying to Where: (Color use here is welcome)
Listed roughly in order of preference
1. Caltech - submitted
2. Princeton - rejected early February
3. UChicago - rejected January
4. Brown - rejected early February
5. UC Berkeley - submitted
6. UCLA - submitted
7. Cornell - accepted late January
8. Duke - interviewed January and rejected early February
9. Michigan - submitted
10. Georgia Tech - accepted late January
11. UW Madison - submitted
12. UIUC - submitted
13. Minnesota - submitted
14. Ohio State - accepted late December
Honestly don't know what to expect this year, maybe it's going to be more competitive than last year or maybe less so. Better safe than sorry, so I'm applying to as many as I can afford (the money and time). I think it's worth it, especially it means I can get into somewhere better.
Can I ask about the background of your recommenders?

MIT, Princeton and I think Rice or UT Austin. Algebraic Geometry/Homological Algebra, commutative algebra/discrete geometry? and algebraic topology

oh woops typo
I don't know if Irvine or UIUC is doing making offers (how would I know I'm an applicant not the admission committee?) check your spam to see if you received an email from secretary or chair with numerous PDF attachments

This is interesting, upon checking my GRE scores on gre.org portal my percentile have changed from last time I saw it!!
(I kept a record of the score PDF so my eyes weren't playing tricks on me)

The percentiles do change occasionally. If future test takers tend to do better than you did, your percentiles will go down. Otherwise they will either go up or stay the same.

Notes: If the list above seems a bit unbalanced (w.r.t. "reach" vs "less reach" and so on), it’s because I decided not to apply to some places after getting into OSU, and withdrew from some others after UChicago. One of my professors warned me that some “very bright students" of hers applied to 20 schools last year and got rejected from all of them, and she didn’t know if this year would be as brutal. Thank goodness it seems not to be! Also, I’ve lurked this forum obsessively for the past several years, and it lowered my confidence a lot (of course, it’s only my fault for continuing to look at it). I spent days convincing myself that the acceptance letter from UChicago wasn’t a scam. It still feels like a dream, or maybe it's just a fluke. Don't be like me!
Re: 2022 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
Thanks! And regarding funding, they do discuss it (in the official acceptance letters, at least)! Feel free to PM me if you want any further details.

How I've changed and why I'm more mature and ready this time. I have 2 undergraduate recommenders (they may be the strongest as they knew me the most), one from grad school, and one is from chair of current school I adjunct for. For some schools, I attached a 20 page paper (more at the undergraduate level) I wrote myself (indicating it was on my own entirely, and not published). For most schools, this is just mentioned on my resume. Not sure if I should have done this.
I'm really not sure about my prospects. I haven't gotten an acceptance yet, so it's making me very nervous.

Re: 2022 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
Does anyone know the chance of getting off the waitlist at Tufts? I've been notified by the director that they have very limited spots available this year, but I'm still very interested in their applied math group.

Honestly don't know what to expect this year, maybe it's going to be more competitive than last year or maybe less so. Better safe than sorry, so I'm applying to as many as I can afford (the money and time). I think it's worth it, especially it means I can get into somewhere better.

Do you know if you were placed on some sort of waitlist, or did the director simply say it was highly unlikely?
By the way, congrats on all of your other offers!

highly unlikely - so basically rejection ...
I know U Oregon and U Washington accepted 2 people (disjoint) at my school acceptances w/o funding, so that's basically a rejection too.

Re: 2022 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
Does anyone know what the average stipend is for UC schools? I got an offer for 23k for 3 quarters(summer not included) at UC Davis, which I thought was on the low side... I was wondering what offers other people got for California schools. Also, is it easy to get a position to teach over the summer to get some extra cash?

Re: 2022 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
UCs are notorious for horrifically underpaying their grad students. They literally protested not too long ago because of the terrible pay. Summer instruction opportunities varies from department to department. Welcome to CA, I guess.Bolbbalgan4 Bom wrote: ↑Fri Feb 11, 2022 3:15 pmDoes anyone know what the average stipend is for UC schools? Re: 2022 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
Seeing that some of the programs I have not yet heard back from are offering waitlist positions to other applicants, I'm wondering whether there would still be a chance for me to be admitted (rather than being put in the waitlist if not rejected). In general, how does this work? I'm pretty confused.

Undergrad Institution: Small liberal arts
Major(s): Mathematics; Financial Economics
Minor(s): Asian Studies
GPA: 3.840/4
Math GPA: 3.734/4, not official
Type of Student: Domestic, Male, White
GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 165
V: 165
W: 4.5
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: Did not take
Program Applying: Some Math, some Statistics depending on department
Research Experience: No math REUs, I didn't start thinking about grad school until it was too late. One month with an Econ professor at my home school that was barely worth the mention in my SOP, just to check the box of "formal research experience." I submitted a draft of some stuff I was working on alongside each of my applications as a Hail Mary.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Department award for each major. Scholarship from the Taiwanese government supporting a year of Chinese study over there... totally unrelated but might make the application unique. Magna cum laude. Little awards here and there.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Tutored for my college's math help center for four semesters, mostly Economics but some Statistics too and Calc every so often.
Math Courses Taken: Calc track, linear algebra, abstract, elementary diff equations, PDEs, real analysis, complex analysis, numerical analysis, intro combinatorics, analysis of algorithms, plus several courses in probability, statistics, and financial math. Some Econ courses that could be considered applied math if you squint hard enough.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Took the GRE for the Fall 2021 application cycle. I didn't make it in anywhere so I'm reapplying this cycle. Although I think I could have improved on my scores, I was ultimately a little too lazy to retake it. I only sent those GRE scores to programs that either required them or strongly recommended them.
Applying to Where (roughly in order of preference):
Berkeley - Statistics PhD / Rejected on 2/8/22
USC - Math PhD / Rejected on 4/12/22
NYU Courant - Math PhD / Admitted to MA on 3/22/22 - Admitted to unfunded Masters - Declined offer

Iowa State - Math PhD / Rejected on 5/2/22
Montana - Math PhD / Admitted to MA on 3/4/22 - This department sounds like they're short on funding, don't include it as a safety before getting an idea of how many PhD students they can support - Declined offer

Re: 2022 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
I think it matters for top schools, but not so much for less competitive schools. It is much easier to overlook a low overall GPA when most people's applications are missing something in a particular area than for the top schools where so many people have applications that are outstanding in all areas.Jerry99 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 04, 2022 8:06 pmI have the same overall GPA and major GPA as you! Note: I only applied to so many big reach schools because my parents went to one of them and two of my recommenders went to two others and convinced me to apply. Unless money is not a problem, I would advise only applying to 1-2 big reach schools/dream schools.
Edit 1/27: Extremely excited about getting in somewhere. I did not think anyone would want me due to my unknown school and low overall GPA. I withdrew a few apps and deleted them from the list above.

Hey! I got into UMass a while ago, but I will be declining the offer soon. Hopefully they'll have some spots open up! Best of luck!
