I'm sorry.
Did you find out by asking a professor that you know or was it an official correspondence?

Fortunately I don't think the fit was great anyway! I received an email to check my portal.

Undergrad Institution: University of Texas at Austin
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): Actuarial Science
GPA:3.34/4.00

Master's Institution: Johns Hopkins University
Major(s): Applied and Computational Mathematics
Minor(s):
GPA:3.96/4.00

Type of Student: Domestic, Male, White (Gay/High School Dropout?)

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: xxx (xx%)
V: xxx (xx%)
W: x.x (xx%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: xxx (xx%)

TOEFL Score: (xx = Rxx/Lxx/Sxx/Wxx) (if applicable)

Program Applying: Pure Math/Applied Math - Probability/Statistics/Combinatorics/Optimization with applications in Financial Mathematics, Operations Research, Data Science

Research Experience: Just projects for school and I work in a research capacity in industry as a Data Scientist (But in reality I am more of a Quantitative Researcher/Modeler and/or Statistician). Took an independent study class in undergrad.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: 2 Actuarial Department Scholarship's in Undergrad
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Tutored both undergrad and graduate classes. Graded for 2 semesters in an upper division financial math (derivatives pricing) class in undergrad.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help:
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: My mediocre GPA from undergrad is a result of not caring about classes outside of math, financial hardship, and being a non traditional student (I attended community college first then transferred to UT as I only had a GRE). Also, my 3.87 GPA from community college is not reflected in my undergrad GPA, although you can see it on my transcripts, because UT only counts grades for courses taken at their institution in the calculation of your GPA. I had to work full-time to support myself through undergrad and have overcome many hardships along the way. Completing a MS in Applied Math was my way of balancing the scales of my GPA but I hope that my industry experience and highly developed sense of grit and work ethic will impact my applications favorably.

Applying to Where: (Color use here is welcome)

Ego Check:
Princeton - Applied and Computational Mathematics/ Pending on 10/1/2021

More probable but not safe:
University of Michigan - Ann Arbor - Applied and Interdisciplinary Mathematics / Pending on 10/1/2021
University of Texas at Austin - Computational and Applied Mathematics (CSEM - Oden Institute) / Pending on 10/1/2021
Georgia Institute of Technology - Mathematics/ Pending on 10/1/2021

You appear to have a strong stats and I'm surprised they did not accept you. Do you mind if I ask you how many math courses you have taken?

You flatter me. I have one of the lowest GPA's on this forum!

Upper division+grad (not all taken at UCLA, all taken after I got my BA):
Abstract Linear Algebra
Abstract Algebra 1
Real Analysis 1
Complex Analysis
Combinatorics and Graph Theory
Mathematical Modeling
Intro to Stochastic Processes
Intro Real Analysis 1 (grad)
Intro Real Analysis 2 (grad)
Intro Topology 1 (grad)
Manifolds 1 (grad)

wonder if it's not enough...

Undergrad Institution: Medium private Catholic university
Major(s):Physics and mathematics BS, mathematics MA
Minor(s):None
GPA: 3.4 undergrad, 4.0 grad (had some trauma that impacted my undergrad grades)
Type of Student: Domestic (but immigrant) trans person

GRE Revised General Test:
I took this is 2018 and scored high but will not bother paying ETS any more money to send scores
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
Not taking due to COVID

TOEFL Score: N/A

Program Applying: Pure math with some physics PhDs. I'm trying to do mathematical string theory research

Research Experience: No original research, although I learning about cluster algebra for 2 years to try to do research and am now writing a master's thesis on mirror symmetry
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Does a graduate TAship count?
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Did tutoring for a year, and have been a grad TA for 1.5 years. AWM officer
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I'm in my third year of graduate courses. I've done 15 graduate courses so I won't bother listing all of them but I've focused on algebra and topology. I've also passed some PhD quals so there's no doubt I'm academically prepared for a PhD program in math. As for minority status, I'm not underrepresented racially (the government says I'm white but most people do not see me that way), but I am visibly trans. Both have impacted my academics
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter:
I wish I could write about the rest of my life because I do perhaps too many things, but schools are mainly interested in mathematics research potential. Most relevant is being a crisis hotline operator for 5.5 years and teaching others within my org to be operators. I've taken thousands of calls so this is important to me
Applying to Where:
Emory - Mathematics
UIC - Mathematics
UIUC - Mathematics
UW Madison - Mathematics
OSU - Mathematics
WashU St Louis - Mathematics
UT Austin - Mathematics
UC San Diego - Mathematics
University of Utah - Mathematics
UM Twin Cities - Mathematics
Stony Brook - Mathematics
UChicago - Physics
UC Berkeley - Mathematics
UMichigan - Mathematics
Current University - Mathematics, guaranteed admission and funding for 3 more years

Wish me luck. This'll be my third time applying to graduate programs and hopefully this time I get into somewhere I want
Do people think I have a chance at any of these schools? I need an advisor with expertise in mathematical string theory and trans affirming healthcare so there are no safeties I can apply to.

Undergrad Institution: Ivy
Major: Math
GPA: 4.02/4.3
Type of Student: Domestic Female

Program Applying: Pure Math (mainly for alg top and related fields)

Research Experience: One REU (no publication, just a final report); reading projects for the past 2.5 years (talks/presentations and expository stuff) with a grad student
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Nothing special (Dean's list, national merit...)
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Have been a TA or tutor since freshman year (sometimes both at same time)
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I'm female. I think my recommendations are pretty solid and were written by fairly well-known people. I really love teaching and wrote about it in my SOP.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: NSF GRFP applicant. Will probably take 9-10 grad classes by graduation (including non-core classes, e.g. homological algebra, homotopy theory, etc.)

Applying to Where: (Ordered first by deadline, then alphabetically.)
Princeton
UChicago - Accepted! 1/5
Stanford
Ohio State - Accepted! 1/2
Berkeley
Harvard
Johns Hopkins
MIT
UCLA - Accepted! 1/19
UIUC
Northwestern
UPenn - Invited to open house! 1/18
Cornell

NSF GRFP

Notes: If the list above seems a bit unbalanced (w.r.t. "reach" vs "less reach" and so on), it’s because I decided not to apply to some places after getting into OSU, and withdrew from some others after UChicago. One of my professors warned me that some “very bright students" of hers applied to 20 schools last year and got rejected from all of them, and she didn’t know if this year would be as brutal. Thank goodness it seems not to be! Also, I’ve lurked this forum obsessively for the past several years, and it lowered my confidence a lot (of course, it’s only my fault for continuing to look at it). I spent days convincing myself that the acceptance letter from UChicago wasn’t a scam. It still feels like a dream, or maybe it's just a fluke. Don't be like me!

I found this pretty nifty chart that looks at average decision timelines for certain schools. The data isn't particularly recent and looks a bit iffy, but it's already helped me calm down about not hearing back anywhere yet. Come end of February and that'll be a different story :?

Oh! Yeah, I received that as well. But my email says at the beginning in italics "This e-mail message is not an offer of admission." so probably everyone gets it haha

Interestingly enough I did not receive this last cycle and I also have a friend who did not receive this email though we submitted our apps at the same time.

I have been shortlisted for Berkeley Statistics (interest in Probability). It will be my first interview for grad admission. What to expect?
Is Berkeley statistics department separated from the math department?

What is your interest, pure math or applied math?
Do they send all of the first batch of offers?

Not the person you were replying to, but I just got in, and my interest is pure math. And I have no idea; I think they don't really tell people these things. In the acceptance letter they say their virtual Open House is on 3/8, so there's certainly still time for more offers to be sent.

If you look on Gradcafe, in 2021, UCLA sent out offers on 1/21 (2 offers), 1/26 (3), 1/29 (1), 2/4 (1), 2/6 (2), so I believe today's offer is comparable to the offers sent on 1/21/2021, there is still hope.
The rejection letters comes latter on 2/6 and 2/26.

Undergrad Institution: Relatively Unknown Liberal Arts College
Major(s): Biochemistry and Economics
Minor(s):
GPA: 3.65
Type of Student: Domestic

M. Sc. Institution: T 30 University
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s):

GRE Revised General Test:

V: 158 (78%)
W: 6.0 (99%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:

Program Applying: Applied Math (Math Otherwise)

Research Experience: A year in my graduate program working on differential equations on Fractals. This coming semester will continue work on this as well as another project in data science. This coming summer will be doing research at MITs LLs
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Standard dean's list stuff, also scholarship for my master's
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Tutor for Real Analysis, Intro Proof, Linear Algebra. TAd for a Statistics Course, and Graded for a Couple Others
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I've taken 27 Upper Division Math Courses and CS Courses (10 of these being graduate courses) over the past 2.5 years (did a gap at my state university). Only got one A-, the rest are As and A+s. Did this while concurrently doing research and being relatively involved with the math department. Making up for lost time cause I definitely spent too much time partying and doing nonmath extracurricular while I was "finding myself" in undergrad. I have strong letters of rec from well-connected faculty. Also, I applied for PhD programs 2 years ago when I thought all you needed was a grad course in algebra, topology, and some analysis. Got accepted into a master's program when they wouldn't let me in for a PhD. Talked about how I used that humbling experience as an indicator of where my weaknesses lied, and how it motivated me to address these weaknesses in my SOP.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: It's never too late to go for a PhD. I started studying math more seriously after my senior year, and I'm hoping that this older age will have them see me as a more serious candidate.

Did your application status ever change from “Being Processed”? My checklist says they haven’t verified my transcript even though they asked me for my fall grades and then said that they successfully uploaded my updated transcript to my application…

McGill TOEFL score confirmation

Post by Galois7 » Sat Jan 22, 2022 5:12 am

Can anyone see the confirmation that their official TOEFL score is received by McGill in their application portal? My score was processed on 10th Jan 2022 according to ETS account but I cannot see anything on the portal. I mailed them 3 days ago but didn't get any reply.

My status is "Being Processed" now. And in the bottom of the application website, it said "Application is submitted and is currently under review". My checklist also says they haven’t verified my transcript

Ohh okay. Any chances you remember after how many days approximately it showed in the portal after you ordered? And does it show on applicant checklist page only or somewhere else?
