Undergrad Institution: Small Liberal Arts College in India
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): Economics
GPA: 3.83 Major GPA: 3.76

GRE Revised General Test:

V: 169 (99%)
W: 5.5 (98%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 790 (73%)
TOEFL Score: 119 = R30/L30/S29/W30
Program Applying: Pure Math (interested in Logic and Set Theory)
Research Experience: 1 REU in graph and rigidity theory at the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics resulting in a joint preprint. Completed the program with honours, been working on the project with my supervisor since the program ended for 6 months now but no new results. 2 ISMs -- in axiomatic set theory and an ongoing one in algebraic topology.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean's List for all semesters
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: TA for Intro to Proofs, Symbolic Logic (philosophy department) and another introductory philosophy course -- 1 semester each.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Does being LGBT makes a difference? I didn't reveal it to most schools though.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I moved out of math and came back to it. The final year of my transcript and the semester following my graduation have mostly econ and phil related stuff and no math. I did not take any grad-level math classes. I have a couple B's in advanced classes (complex analysis and differential geometry) which brought my math GPA down. Hoping that the ISMs and letters make up for it. At least 2 of my letter writers know me well.

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Tutor for Real Analysis, Intro Proof, Linear Algebra. TAd for a Statistics Course, and Graded for a Couple Others
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I've taken 27 Upper Division Math Courses and CS Courses (10 of these being graduate courses) over the past 2.5 years (did a gap at my state university). Only got one A-, the rest are As and A+s. Did this while concurrently doing research and being relatively involved with the math department. Making up for lost time cause I definitely spent too much time partying and doing nonmath extracurricular while I was "finding myself" in undergrad. I have strong letters of rec from well-connected faculty. Also, I applied for PhD programs 2 years ago when I thought all you needed was a grad course in algebra, topology, and some analysis. Got accepted into a master's program when they wouldn't let me in for a PhD. Talked about how I used that humbling experience as an indicator of where my weaknesses lied, and how it motivated me to address these weaknesses in my SOP.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: It's never too late to go for a PhD. I started studying math more seriously after my senior year, and I'm hoping that this older age will have them see me as a more serious candidate.

Hi
I am a 2022 applicant as well. I was wondering what an interview would entail. Is it trying to gauge a cultural fit or is it knowledge-based? Do you know?
Thanks

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Standard dean's list stuff, also scholarship for my master's

Re: 2022 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
What is the true value (for lack of a better word) of unofficial recommendations/acceptances. After applying to a few places, I got an email from a prof in one of the departments saying he really liked my application and has recommended me to Graduate admissions department. What are my chances in this school now?

Honestly speaking, I think this is positive but not that positive. Becoz I send emails to some of the potential advisors and I have got several similar replies too but some of those schools give offers and interviews but I didn't get one. Some professors said "I am happy to take you as student" but I am quite worried (and doubtful) about whether they can admit me eventually.
I guess these might be "polite words" or at least they can guarantee that you are not screened away without reading your portfolio carefully.
But if they got "real power" in their schools, they might guarantee that they can admit you.
But on the other hand, if you have sent email and get no reply, getting feedback from professors might be good sign.

No I had not emailed them. This was one of the department faculties telling me that they had recommended me to the graduate admissions and I should let the faculty know if I get any more offers so that and I quote "we can stay competitive".pi31415pi wrote: ↑Wed Jan 26, 2022 1:35 pmDid you send the prof email or he/she contact you first?hornedsphere wrote: ↑Wed Jan 26, 2022 12:04 amWhat is the true value (for lack of a better word) of unofficial recommendations/acceptances. Re: 2022 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
I think UC Davis math has sent out decisions. I got an unofficial acceptance from them with official letter coming next week.
Re: 2022 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
This is basically admission. The "Graduate admissions department" in most schools is just the administration above math department which handles all admissions of different departments (e.g. sending out official offers.) From my experience most math departments/profs send out offer telling you "we have recommended you to the grad admission depart blahblah". Then comes the official letter from the school/some administrator of the university. I should not be affirmative but i think there is very little chance you will not receive an offer from that school eventually, --from a last year applicant.hornedsphere wrote: ↑Wed Jan 26, 2022 2:38 pmNo I had not emailed them. P.S. I also think it is very reasonable to just email and ask that professor about what exactly this means/ is this an acceptance.

V: 149, this would look much better if I get 1 more point
W: 4
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 910
TOEFL Score: waived due to 4-yr degree in US
Program Applying: pure math
Research Experience: Working on a required thesis for the degree, 1 REU and 1 paper published as author.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Almost made the IMO team for my country, Putnam hm, government scholarship from my country as well, pays for my tuition/housing/insurance alongside university need-based scholarship (it's about 10-15k a year). Won a couple coding competition in my country before college.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Accepted for an internship at a major bank in the US but I decided not to go, probably burned a bridge but whatever. Never graded, proctored or taught classes.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Currently taking 2 grad classes and completed 6. I think my recommenders are pretty famous, but not super famous.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: My department has lots of smarter people (undergraduates, graduate students here are infinitely smarter) than me, but majority of them don't want to go for a doctorate degree. Those who do want to pursue a Ph.D - I know where they are applying so I try to avoid applying to too many places that they are also applying. Maybe there are no such thing as "quota for every school" when it comes to admissions, but one can never be too careful. I wanted to stick around at my school since I love it but I was encouraged to applying elsewhere, weird.
