If anybody has got Maryland and plans to go to some other school, please consider withdrawing your application. It will really beneficial to some of us who are on the waitlist

I understand you're waiting for acceptances and that it is incredibly stressful to go through (I'm on some waitlists too), but these kinds of messages are really inconsiderate and place a lot of pressure on people who are making difficult decisions that will drastically impact their careers and personal lives. They don't need you guilting them into making a hasty decision.

ijustwanttodomath, I completely agree. I've gotten uncomfortable DMs from people telling me to decline offers and it just makes things even more stressful. I truly understand where they're coming from because I got rejected/waitlisted as schools I really liked, too. But it just feels rude to tell other people to decline offers.

Also, has there been any info about waitlist and shit like that from Boston University? I have seen around 2-3 acceptances on this thread.

My friend was accepted to Vanderbilt, and recently attended their in-person orientation. So I think they did admit some students.

Purdue University - Math Virtual Visit

Post by Galois7 » Thu Mar 03, 2022 1:08 pm

I am offered admission at Purdue. They are having a math virtual visit. This is what they have written:

"There will be panel discussions with faculty regarding their areas of research. This will be an excellent chance to gather information and meet those faculty you might be interested in taking courses from and, eventually, doing your dissertation research with."

Can somebody give any information on what happens in such panel? And what are the some important or good questions that one should ask in this?

I am interested in algebraic number theory and have just one potential advisor in mind. There is one more professor but he is doing more of algebraic geometry from last 5-6 years.

Undergrad Institution: A Canadian University
Major(s): Mathematics with a minor in physics
GPA (over final 2 years): 3.9/4.0

Master's Institution: A Canadian University
Program Length: 2 years
Major(s): Mathematics
GPA (over final 2 years): 3.99/4.0

Second Master's Institution: UToronto
Program Length: 8-12 months
Major(s): MEng in Fintech
GPA (over final 2 years): no clue yet

Type of student: Canadian minority female
Program applying: Pure mathematics; combinatorics/set theory

Research experience: No publications though I had some minor new results in my MSc thesis. Nobody really publishes in my field before at least a couple of two years in as a doctoral student...
Awards/Honors/Recognition: Close to top student in my Master's cohort. Departmental nomination to attend a MSRI Summer School with travel funding. Department scholarships for summer research. Provincial award for academic/research excellence. Dean's list a couple years (meh...). Told to apply for National award but I forgot... Oops.
Math courses taken: Advanced courses in logic/foundations and set theory. Graduate algebra, analysis and functional analysis. Some applied physics stuff like manifolds. As in all of them.
Miscellaneous points: Non-binary, asexual and on the autism spectrum? Not sure if any of those are viewed as good things though... Talked about how being autistic has made math almost like a safe haven for me in my SoP. TA for vector calculus and analysis as a grad student. I enjoy learning and helping people because it is how I communicate and show my love for people. Talking about math helps me improve my very bad social skills and I have taught a lot of math/done tons of math outreach for undergrads and high school students. I think my recommenders are fairly fond of me and at least think I'm a memorable character lol. I'm famous for doing really well when I overload on courses and not so good when I don't but I don't know what this says about me.

Applying:
Waterloo (PhD in PMath) - accepted (deferred from the previous year + 5k award)
Toronto (PhD) - accepted (initially waitlisted) - ATTENDING

My friend was accepted to Vanderbilt, and recently attended their in-person orientation. So I think they did admit some students.
A recommender of my friend emailed the department and received a response that they are not going to admit any students in these two years. So my friend did not apply for Vanderbilt. I guess there are some miscommunications.

sometimes the admission process depends on specific directions of study. I also did not see Vanderbilt put any visible announcement on their webpage saying they are not accepting anybody this year (so it would be unethical if they do plan otherwise).

GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: Did not take; most tests in SoCal are cancelled.

TOEFL Score: N/A

Undergrad Institution: Top US public university (backed by renowned rankings, not open for debate lmao)
Major(s): Applied math, physical chemistry, German (that's right, really all over the spectrum)
Minor(s): None
GPA: 3.91/4.0
Math GPA: 3.97/4.0
Type of Student: International Asian male

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170
V: 157
W: 4.0
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: Not available nearby due to pandemic

Program Applying: All applied math PhD programs (math if no devoted applied program)

Research Experience: A summer applied math REU project on ML at my home institution; our paper got accepted to a conference but I'm not attending as it doesn't have much to do with math
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: College honors and departmental honors
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Course grader for one quarter
Math Courses Taken:
Graduate: Finished the yearlong grad sequences in numerical analysis, applied DEs and numerical linear algebra; also courses on fluids, calculus of variation and image processing
Undergrad: Linear algebra, real analysis, DEs, numerical analysis, probability (missing abstract algebra and complex analysis though)
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I was a chemistry major for my first two years while taking honors math courses and studying German; switched to the majors I have now in my third year, which is also the time when I took the majority of my grad courses. I didn't really plan out my studies very well so I'm missing some pure math topics (actually not required by the major either), which could have negatively impacted my applications. Also, I indicated interest in math applied to chemistry in some applications, which seems to be a double-edged sword.

Is it alright to email and ask when(and if) a University might plan to release second round offers? I have been put on a waitlist with no more info after that.

I emailed a few schools with things similar to that, just asking for an update. Most have just said "we can't say anything, it'll probably be in April, if not close to April 15th when we're able to make a final decision." I doubt it hurts to ask, but I wouldn't expect much useful info. They have to wait for enough people to reject their offer to be able to admit more people, and this may or may not even happen.

Master's Program Institution: The same large public university
Major(s): Mathematics
GPA: Only the first semester in MS, grades haven't been posted, so don't know yet. If everything goes as expected it should also be 4.0/4.0
Type of Student: International Male

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170 (96%)
V: 169 (99%)
W: 5.0 (91%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 940 (96%)

Program Applying: Pure Math

Research Experience: A year and a half of doing a research project in operator algebras at this point. Results during the first half year posted to arXiv in 2020 and a new version reflecting new results has also been posted to arXiv and submitted to a journal (in the editorial process now). Advisor is well-known in the field, and, well, I hope the results in the paper will also be interesting to others working in the field. Before the research began I had done reading courses and honors projects in functional analysis for 1.5 yrs.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Typical graduation honors and distinctions stuff. Some math awards during high school but I guess that wouldn't matter.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I've taken 9 grad math courses (measure theory, probability 1 & 2, logic, Hilbert spaces, Lie gps and Lie algebras, classical algebraic geometry, algebraic topology 1, algebraic number theory) with straight A during my undergrad yrs (I graduated in three yrs, so I think given that 9 grad courses are impressive enough). This is my first semester of MS and 5 grad courses this semester (grad algebra, grad geometry 1, Banach spaces, modern algebraic geometry 1, algebraic topology 2). Grades haven't come out but straight A expected. 3 more grad courses (grad geometry 2, modern algebraic geometry 2, group representation theory) expected next semester. My letters of recommendation should be pretty good. The main letter is from my research advisor who I've already worked with for 2.5 yrs, is well-known in the field, and knows other notable people in operator algebras and quantum info theory. Other letters are also expected to be strong, with three letter writers somewhat famous, I guess...? (Does having Wikipedia pages count?)

Applying to Where: (All Pure Math PhD)

Donation (I mean, these are already donation tier to begin with. And no professor at any of these works in my research field, so really, donation):

MIT Rejected
Stanford Rejected

Cornell Waitlisted

Reach (at least with people in my field):

UT Austin Admitted/Rejected/Waitlisted/Pending on (date) / Accepted/Declined
UCSD Admitted / Accepted/Declined

Safe (Again, I hope...?):
U of Iowa Withdrawn

Random thoughts:
(03/06): Everyone is telling me that there is still hope, but I know my chances are converging to zero exponentially.
(03/11): Oh well, there is only UT Autin I have yet to hear back. But I doubt I will get anything positive from them. It is clearly a sign for me to take my next step outside of academia. Even though most of my friends/professors suggested I should give it a second try next year, I will not reapply nor waste a butt load of money on a Master's degree. I appreciate their encouragement very much, but the competition has been intensifying year by year. Maybe this just means we don't need that many people to do math, that's it. I do envy people who have a chance to continue their journey in math and wish them a great future. As for myself, I'll quit my attempt of beating the law of supply and demand. Maybe there are other much-needed things in this world that I happen to be good at. I mark the end of my mathematics career here. Hopefully, someday in the near future when I look back on what I wrote today, I'll appreciate this door He closed and the window He opened for me.
Oh dear! Sorry to see about the rejections in your application. I hope that you do get into UTAustin or the two waitlisted universities. Good luck in your future!

UC Berkeley - Rejected (02/04)
UT Austin
UCLA - Rejected (03/11)
UIUC - Rejected (02/11)
MIT - Rejected (02/07)

Northwestern - Rejected (02/08)
Upenn - Waitlisted (02/22)

I don't know about your stats, but your waitlists at UPenn and Duke make me think you might have a strong application, so you should definitely reapply next year.

Also, apply to safety schools to maximize your chances of getting accepted somewhere. You can do good research not only at top schools.
This is my second time applying to PhD programs after being rejected by every school I applied to last year, so I know how you feel because I wasn't going to reapply either. However, I'm glad I did because this year I did get some offers.

I hope you decide to give it another try.
Good luck!

Did you do anything during the gap year? It's very likely that I will get rejected by all the schools I applied to, and I think I'm gonna try one more time next year.

I really appreciate your advice. I did apply to four other safety schools, but one of my letter writers forgot to submit their letters. It would be nice if they missed MIT, Harvard, and Chicago instead of my safeties. This kind of thing happens all the time. Can't blame them.

Oh dear! Sorry to see about the rejections in your application. I hope that you do get into UTAustin or the two waitlisted universities. Good luck in your future!
Thanks for your kind words! Really needed it in these tough times.

I fully agree with the other posters in that you have a very strong profile. The fact that you made the waitlist for several top programs means that you're very competitive. You should for sure reapply next year because your profile will only get stronger in your gap year and it'll be a LOT easier to go through applications a second time (you already have SOPs from this cycle that you can use as a template). FYI, it's incredibly common for people to get rejected by all grad schools the first time but get in the second time so you're not alone my dude :) You got this!

ohdear--one of my friends got rejected from all the schools they applied to last year, and then received an acceptance from one of those same programs this year. I didn't apply last year but I did take a gap year and although I got a few rejections and silent waitlists/rejections, I got acceptances into programs I'm happy with *and* I earned more than 3x what I would have made as a grad student anyway--giving me a great chance to save much more money before starting my PhD than I would have had if I started in fall 2021 instead! If your educational and professional goals involve getting a doctorate in math, then there's no harm in trying again. Nonetheless, best of luck to you with your future endeavors. There's plenty of great math-related careers that don't require a PhD--I have an upcoming interview for a research mathematical statistician job that pays $$$ that I applied for solely out of paranoia that I wouldn't get admitted to any PhD programs, lol.

Undergrad and Graduate Institution: US Public University System
Major(s): Chemical Engineering
Minor(s): none
Master Major: Mathematics
Type of Student: Domestic Asian Male

GPA: 2.7
GRE Revised General Test: (No One Cares about general test anyway)
Q:164
V:155
W:2
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: didn't send my score.

Program Applying: Most Ph.D. Pure Math, some applied math

Research Experience: 2+ years of experience as RA in a fluid Mechanic Lab. A year's worth of research in mathematics in pure math. And 1 semester of search in applied math. Currently working on a publishable paper from pure math research but since it is still not ready, didn't mention it in applications.
Math courses:
Graduate Course Work: Real Variables I, II, Abstract Algebra I, II, Topology I,II, Complex Variable I, Dynamical System I.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Strong recommendations from advisor and professor I worked with on research.

Applying to Where: (Color use here is welcome)

Listed roughly in order of preference
1. NYU - rejected 4/8 got admitted to unfund master in Math in Finance.
2. Graduate Center - Admitted with 10 semesters of TFellowship
3. BU- rejected in February
4. Tufts- Rejected in February
5. University of Tennessee, Knoxville-Admitted 4/6, TAship 21k/year
6. U of Delaware - Admitted 4/6, TAship 23k/year renewable for 5 years, in addition, 6k min for summer research
7. the University of Houston - Admitted in early may and got an funding of 19k ish declined
8. U of Texas at Dallas - adimited 2/12, 2k/month TA and health insurance through the schoolwithdraw 3/4
9. U of Memphis -admitted 2/5 with $19000/yr , health insurance, withdraw 3/4
10. IU Purdue U Indianapolis - Interviewed and messed up, never heard anything back
11. Drexel - Still Pending
12. Claremont - admitted 2/1 with 14k fellowship a year(not funded :() Withdraw
13. Denver university - Admitted 3/24, but no word on funding at all Actually, Im not sure if I were offered funding , since I withdraw so fast, didn't call and ask about it.

So, I believe this year will be less competitive relatively speaking when compared with last year. Since we are recovering from the COVID-19, I remember last year on phone with some departments saying they have no funds to hire Ph.D., and some said only 1 or 2 Ph.D. positions.
Haven't heard back from most schools yet(prolly waitlisted or ghosted, Idk :o ) But I'm Really Happy I got admitted to Graduate Center, will prolly attend there.

While you just posted, I think you are the only person I have seen who has heard back from the CUNY Graduate Center (so congratulations, it is a great school!). When did you hear back from them?

Hi! Thanks!
I heard back around 3/12, I forgot the exact date, but I got an email earlier before that week from the director asking if I was still interested in their program.

Can anyone speak to the reputation of the department and PhD program at Tufts?
