2022 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results

Post by mindyummy » Thu Sep 09, 2021 6:39 pm

Guess this year I'll kick this off, even though it's two days later than last year.
Hopefully it won't be a bloodbath like last year. And happy applying everyone!

Undergrad Institution: Large Public University
Major(s): Mathematics and Geology
Minor(s): Computer Science
GPA: 3.68 out of 4.00
Type of Student: Domestic white female

GRE Revised General Test:
it's an embarrassment
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: xxx (xx%) cancelled

Program Applying: Pure Math

Research Experience: Writing a senior thesis in algebraic geometry. Also attended couple talks and a workshop virtually.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Some university and department scholarship and awards. Will be graduating with honors.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Tutored and TA-ed college algebra, business math, trigonometry precalculus and business calculus.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Female.
Math courses:
(undergraduate) Abstract Algebra 1+2, Advanced Calculus 1+2, Combinatorics, Algebraic Combinatorics, Graph Theory, Intro to Proofs/Discrete Math, Complex Analysis, Intro to Mathematical Statistics, Linear Algebra 1+2, ODE, PDE, Topology, Differential Geometry, Numerical Analysis, Number Theory
(graduate) Real analysis 1+2, algebra 1+2, algebraic topology, differential topology
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I'm domestic? I have 4 recommendations letters. I don't think in-state schools will give me any more chances than an out-of-state school per my parent's residency. And I don't think my parents' alum school matters. So no, in short.

Applying to Where: (Color use here is welcome)

Listed roughly in order of preference
1. Caltech - rejected February
2. Princeton - rejected early February
3. UChicago - rejected January
4. Brown - rejected early February
5. UC Berkeley - ACCEPTED early February and ATTENDING!!!
6. UCLA - rejected early February
7. Cornell - accepted late January
8. Duke - interviewed January and rejected early February
9. Michigan - cancelled application
10. Georgia Tech - accepted late January
11. UW Madison - cancelled application
12. UIUC - accepted early February
13. Minnesota - cancelled application
14. Ohio State - accepted late December declined offer

Honestly don't know what to expect this year, maybe it's going to be more competitive than last year or maybe less so. Better safe than sorry, so I'm applying to as many as I can afford (the money and time). I think it's worth it, especially it means I can get into somewhere better. :D

Undergrad Institution: Foreign from a small country
GPA:8.81/10
Type of Student:International white male

Masters same university as undergrad
GPA:9.58/10

GRE Revised General Test:
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
Not taking

TOEFL Score: 113(30/30/26/27)

Program Applying: Pure Math - Harmonic Analysis/Complex Analysis/PDE

Research Experience: There are no REUs in my country, but I have been working at the AI research institute and will be publishing a paper and presenting it at a conference. Will also attend a 3 month research internship at Simon Fraiser University in Canada with a very famous professor this January.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions:None that I can think of.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: I have been a Tutor for 5 years and 1 year I was a TA for a linear algebra course.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: My masters thesis advisor is very famous in his field and has already put me into contact with some of the professors that I would want to work with. I think all 3 of my LoR should be great/good. Since I will have a masters, I have taken a lot of grad courses ~15 and did well in all of them
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Not sure if it helps but I have been volunteering and working a lot with underprivileged kids usually for the whole summer. I am also a first-gen College student.

Applying to Where: All Phd order alphabetically

1.Brown University - Rejected 1/2/2022
2.Cornell University
3.Duke University - Rejected 2/2/2022
4.Georgia Institute of Technology
5.UW-Madison
6.Northwestern University
7.Rice University - Waitlisted 21.1.2022
8.Rutgers University at New Brunswick
9.Stanford University
10.Stony Brook University
11.UCLA
12.UIUC
13.UCSD- Accepted 4/2/2022
14.University of Minnesota
15.University of Missouri
16.Yale

Update: 21.1.2022
Got my first decision and it's a waitlist. Feeling a little bummed out and afraid of my chances at other schools if I wasn't good enough for Rice
Update: 1/2/2022
Rejection from Brown was expected
Update: 2/2/2022
Duke rejection was expected. Not a good research fit and applied there just because I got a fee waiver.
Update: 4/2/2022
Getting accepted into UCSD proves that the gen GRE is a scam since I didn't even take it even though its required

Undergrad Institution: State, not known for math
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): Computer Science
GPA: Overall: 3.74/4.00 Major: 3.87/4.00
Type of Student: DWM

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 164 (81%)
V: 160 (85%)
W: 5.0 (91%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
Didn't take.

Program Applying: Pure math PhD

Research Experience:I have one preprint on the arXiv.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: None
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Tutored and TA-ed for Calc I, II, III, and undergraduate real analysis. Undergrad research assistant for one of my letter writers.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I have connections at some of the schools I'm applying to through my advisor (and I've done research that's at least semi-pertinent to their interests.) I'll also have taken 5 graduate classes (Real Analysis I/II, Abstract Algebra I/II, Theory of ODEs) by the time I graduate. I expect my letters will be quite strong as well. I attended PCMI, but no regular REUs unfortunately.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: First-gen student/Pell grant recipient

Applying to Where: (Color use here is welcome)
Reach:
Northwestern - Rejected (2/08/2022)
Rutgers - Waitlisted Rejected
Match(?):
Ohio State University - Accepted and attending (12/30/2021) w/ $22k stipend ($26k for the first year)
Safety(?):
University of Arizona - Accepted Declined
Safety:
Virginia Tech - Accepted Declined

Masters
University of Missouri - Accepted (Deferred offer from last year's cycle) Declined

EDIT 12/30/21: Drastically cut down on the number of schools I'm applying to. That was probably a stupid decision, but luckily I got in somewhere decent anyway.

It's a bummer I was waitlisted and then rejected by Rutgers (my top choice). I think having a decent subject score would have made the difference.

Undergrad Institution: Large Public
Major(s): Mathematics
Type of Student: International

Applying to Where: (Color use here is welcome)
Chicago - Rejected (01/14)
Columbia - Rejected(03/10)
Stanford - Rejected (02/19)
Washington - Rejected (03/09)
Duke - Waitlisted (02/02) Rejected (04/19)
UC Berkeley - Rejected (02/04)
UT Austin - Rejected (04/19)
UCLA - Rejected (03/11)
UIUC - Rejected (02/11)
MIT - Rejected (02/07)
Minnesota - Waitlisted (03/27) Accepted (04/15) Attending!
Michigan - Rejected (03/04)
Harvard - Rejected (01/31)
Northwestern - Rejected (02/08)
Upenn - Waitlisted (02/22)

Random thoughts:
(03/06): Everyone is telling me that there is still hope, but I know my chances are converging to zero exponentially.
(03/11): Oh well, there is only UT Autin I have yet to hear back. But I doubt I will get anything positive from them. It is clearly a sign for me to take my next step outside of academia. Even though most of my friends/professors suggested I should give it a second try next year, I will not reapply nor waste a butt load of money on a Master's degree. I appreciate their encouragement very much, but the competition has been intensifying year by year. Maybe this just means we don't need that many people to do math, that's it. I do envy people who have a chance to continue their journey in math and wish them a great future. As for myself, I'll quit my attempt of beating the law of supply and demand. Maybe there are other much-needed things in this world that I happen to be good at. I mark the end of my mathematics career here. Hopefully, someday in the near future when I look back on what I wrote today, I'll appreciate this door He closed and the window He opened for me.
(04/01): It turns out that Minnesota put me on their waitlist. I was also invited to the open house. Although being waitlisted guarantees nothing, it is still comforting.
(04/15): I don't know what is going to happen in the next couple of days as people started to finalize their decisions. UMN is the only program that looks promising. Fingers crossed.

Guess I should add mine.

Undergrad Institution: Ivy
Major(s): Mathematics, Physics
Minor(s):
GPA: 3.71 / 4.00
Type of Student: Domestic

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170 (96%)
V: 167 (88%)
W: 5.5 (98%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 910 (95%)

Program Applying: Pure Math

Research Experience: Finishing up a senior project in algebraic topology. Simultaneously did an REU online and research with a professor at my school in algebraic geometry. We were able to get two papers published in well known journals. Currently working on submitting another paper, preprint available on arxiv.

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Recipient of a national scholarship for college, and received a scholarship that basically pays for my 4 years of college from an organization associated with my high school. Took the Putnam once, got double digit score but nothing super impressive.

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: TA-ed for single variable as well as multi variable calculus and graded for undergraduate real analysis and combinatorics.

Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I've taken varieties of math classes from category theory, representation theory to functional analysis and differential topology. I think I have a good exposure to the basic concepts of every common fields, I did go a bit more in depth in algebraic geometry, algebraic topology and category theory. I have taken 5 graduate courses so far, 2 current, and 2 in spring. I think all 3 of my letter writers are pretty well known in their field (2 in algebraic geometry and 1 in algebraic topology). Most of the departments I'm applying to have professors that are direct descendants of my letter writers. This might help idk.

Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I think I covered everything above, don't have any other life-changing incidents to add here honestly.

Applying to Where: (Color use here is welcome)

The names can be a little misleading as most of the courses are a continuation of the ones from our undergrad. However, the ones I have/will taken are:
-Lie groups
-Differential geometry
-Computability theory
-Special functions and dynamical systems
-Partial differential equations
-Analysis on manifolds
-graduate complex analysis
-Harmonic Analysis
-Graduate group theory
-Functional analysis 1
-Trace ideals and applications

UC-Riverside - submitted 11/28, rejected 4/13 (direct email)
Delaware - submitted 12/15, withdrew

Safety:
CU-Denver - submitted 12/15, accepted 2/22, TAship for 5 years ($18k/yr) 4/2, declined

Note: I only applied to so many big reach schools because my parents went to one of them and two of my recommenders went to two others and convinced me to apply. Unless money is not a problem, I would advise only applying to 1-2 big reach/dream schools.

Edit 1/27: Extremely excited about getting in somewhere. I did not think anyone would want me due to my unknown school and low overall GPA. I hope everyone else gets good news, as well! Feel free to DM me if you want to chat about anything :D

Edit 3/28: I'm kinda over getting waitlisted... This is so annoying.

Undergrad Institution: Medium private Catholic university
Major(s):Physics and mathematics BS, mathematics MA
Minor(s):None
GPA: 3.4 undergrad, 4.0 grad (had some trauma that impacted my undergrad grades)
Type of Student: Domestic (but immigrant) trans person

GRE Revised General Test:
I took this is 2018 and scored high but will not bother paying ETS any more money to send scores
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
Not taking due to COVID

TOEFL Score: N/A

Program Applying: Pure math with some physics PhDs. I'm trying to do mathematical string theory research

Research Experience: No original research, although I learning about cluster algebra for 2 years to try to do research and am now writing a master's thesis on mirror symmetry
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Does a graduate TAship count?
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Did tutoring for a year, and have been a grad TA for 1.5 years. AWM officer
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I'm in my third year of graduate courses. I've done 15 graduate courses so I won't bother listing all of them but I've focused on algebra and topology. I've also passed some PhD quals so there's no doubt I'm academically prepared for a PhD program in math. As for minority status, I'm not underrepresented racially (the government says I'm white but most people do not see me that way), but I am visibly trans. Both have impacted my academics
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter:
I wish I could write about the rest of my life because I do perhaps too many things, but schools are mainly interested in mathematics research potential. Most relevant is being a crisis hotline operator for 5.5 years and teaching others within my org to be operators. I've taken thousands of calls so this is important to me
Applying to Where:
Emory - Mathematics -Rejected 02/14
UIC - Mathematics
UIUC - Mathematics - Rejected 02/11

NC State - Mathematics - Rejected 04/11, but I applied only in early March
UMissouri Columbia - Mathematics - Unofficially accepted 04/15
Current University -Mathematics - guaranteed admission, but funding is unlikely because the departments is sure I'll get into the schools I applied to

Wish me luck. This'll be my third time applying to graduate programs and hopefully this time I get into somewhere I want

Research Experience: 12 months of Full time research in plasma physics with 1 high impact paper (With large news coverage) and another in process, 3 months of FT research in particle physics, 3 months of FT and 9 months of Part time research in Algebraic Combinatorics (with a preprint out and submitted to LAA and another hopefully getting on arXiv before applications).

Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: B in Vector Calculus and Undegrad Analysis (had a rough term although got an A in the grad one), a NCR in Discrete Mathematics during an exchange term in HKU (which happened because I dropped the course in week 3 after having already approved it but I graded/TA'ed for it later at my school). Poor performance in sophomore year

Applying to Where:
Drexel - Didn't hear back by 03/31/2022. Withdrawn on 03/31/2022 to apply to Drexel CS department.
Temple - Applied 12/15/2021, Accepted via email 1/18/2022 27k stipend, nominated for presidential scholarship which gives 30k in 1st and 4th year without teaching responsibility.

[u]Rutgers - Didn't hear back/Waitlisted idk

Edit: Lots of things happened but committed to Drexel CS. A faculty I worked with in a reading group was the admissions chair and gave me a soft offer for a TAship while I was deciding. The stipend being significantly higher than any of my offers (And most math stipends) and his reassurance that I can explore CS but I can always go work with the Math department if I dont like CS as long as I finish the degree and TAship requirements in CS, persuaded me to go with this.

I would be very greatful if you could tell me which universities should I apply for, or your thoughts on how competitive I am for these programs.
Definitely apply to University of Utah as well. They have a really strong commutative algebra/algebraic geometry group.

After reading this forum for years, it's finally my turn! Let's gooo!

Undergrad Institution: European, apparently quite prestigious
Major(s): Mathematics (B.Sc., M. Sc.)
Minor(s): Computer Science (B. Sc.)
GPA: ~3.3 (BSc), ~3.8 (M. Sc) (master's GPA not final, take +/-0.1, this will be updated too)
Type of Student: International female, POC

GRE Revised General Test: not taken
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: not taken either

TOEFL Score: (116 = R30/L29/S29/W28)

Program Applying: combinatorics and discrete math programs (some in applied, some in pure), a couple CS

Research Experience: Undergrad thesis (some new results, I was stupid and I didn't try to publish although I could have), Master's thesis (also some new results, will try to get it published asap, preprint is almost ready)
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: I had a scholarship from my home country
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Was a tutor/TA/grader for 9 semesters in total, 3 of them were grad courses
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I had ~20 grad classes (thanks master's studies during covid!), female from second/third world country
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I was also an international student in undergrad/master's

I have deleted my application details because my admission decision will most likely uniquely reveal my identity. I have applied to US, Canada, UK, Germany mostly. Questions are always welcome.

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: no, didn't put myself out there in undergrad...
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Analyst job for 1 yr after undergrad, not super relevant though
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: 4 grad classes in total (analysis 1/2, topology 1, manifolds 1)
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I basically did a buildabear math major after undergrad with money I saved up, taking advantage of the remote situation. Also took some control engineering, and I have lots of programming experience (from analyst job, courses, and side projects)

Undergrad Institution: Large public university
Major(s): Mathematics & Physics
GPA: 4.0/4.0
Master's Program Institution: The same large public university
Major(s): Mathematics
GPA: Only the first semester in MS, grades haven't been posted, so don't know yet. If everything goes as expected it should also be 4.0/4.0
Type of Student: International Male

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170 (96%)
V: 169 (99%)
W: 5.0 (91%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 940 (96%)

Program Applying: Pure Math

Research Experience: A year and a half of doing a research project in operator algebras at this point. Results during the first half year posted to arXiv in 2020 and a new version reflecting new results has also been posted to arXiv and submitted to a journal (in the editorial process now). Advisor is well-known in the field, and, well, I hope the results in the paper will also be interesting to others working in the field. Before the research began I had done reading courses and honors projects in functional analysis for 1.5 yrs.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Typical graduation honors and distinctions stuff. Some math awards during high school but I guess that wouldn't matter.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I've taken 9 grad math courses (measure theory, probability 1 & 2, logic, Hilbert spaces, Lie gps and Lie algebras, classical algebraic geometry, algebraic topology 1, algebraic number theory) with straight A during my undergrad yrs (I graduated in three yrs, so I think given that 9 grad courses are impressive enough). This is my first semester of MS and 5 grad courses this semester (grad algebra, grad geometry 1, Banach spaces, modern algebraic geometry 1, algebraic topology 2). Grades haven't come out but straight A expected. 3 more grad courses (grad geometry 2, modern algebraic geometry 2, group representation theory) expected next semester. My letters of recommendation should be pretty good. The main letter is from my research advisor who I've already worked with for 2.5 yrs, is well-known in the field, and knows other notable people in operator algebras and quantum info theory. Other letters are also expected to be strong, with three letter writers somewhat famous, I guess...? (Does having Wikipedia pages count?)

Applying to Where: (All Pure Math PhD)

Undergrad Institution: US Private
Major(s): Math, CS
Minor(s): Physics
GPA: 4.41/5
Type of Student: International Male

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170
V: 149, this would look much better if I get 1 more point
W: 4
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 910

TOEFL Score: waived due to 4-yr degree in US

Program Applying: pure math

Research Experience: Working on a required thesis for the degree, 1 REU and 1 paper published as author.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Almost made the IMO team for my country, Putnam hm, government scholarship from my country as well, pays for my tuition/housing/insurance alongside university need-based scholarship (it's about 10-15k a year). Won a couple coding competition in my country before college.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Accepted for an internship at a major bank in the US but I decided not to go, probably burned a bridge but whatever. Never graded, proctored or taught classes.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Currently taking 2 grad classes and completed 6. I think my recommenders are pretty famous, but not super famous.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: My department has lots of smarter people (undergraduates, graduate students here are infinitely smarter) than me, but majority of them don't want to go for a doctorate degree. Those who do want to pursue a Ph.D - I know where they are applying so I try to avoid applying to too many places that they are also applying. Maybe there are no such thing as "quota for every school" when it comes to admissions, but one can never be too careful. I wanted to stick around at my school since I love it but I was encouraged to applying elsewhere, weird.

Applying to Where: (Color use here is welcome)
Harvard - denied 1/31
Yale - accepted 1/28
UC Berkeley - denied 2/5

Brown - denied 2/1
Stanford - waitlisted

Undergrad Institution: Top 30ish Liberal Arts School
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): None
GPA: 3.74
Math GPA: 3.90
Type of Student: Domestic Male

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 168 (91%) (I don't think these matter)
V: 164 (94%)
W: 4.0 (55%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: NA (Only applied to schools that said it won't affect my chances, so hopefully that's true)

Program Applying: Pure Math PhD.

Research Experience: In the summer of 2020 I did research in Analysis with a professor at my school, and last summer I was a part of an REU in Probability Theory. I am also currently working on a year long "Honors Independent Research Project" in Representation Theory/Combinatorics, with a faculty sponsor from my school. Also presenting our REU work at the 2022 JMM.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Does Dean's list count?
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: TA for two classes last spring (Calc I and a Discrete Math class), and I'll be a TA for Abstract Algebra this spring.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: All of the upper level (graduate type) classes at my school have you work on a month long research project, which I was told to emphasize in my personal statement (projects in Measure Theory, Topology, Signal Processing, and Representation Theory). Also one of (the very few when applying to math grad school) advantages of going to a small liberal arts school is that I am very close with all of my recommenders, with the exception of my REU professor, but I would still say that I know him well.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I have never taken a math class below the "300" level in college (so really only proof based courses), and have gotten A-'s or better in all of my math classes. Despite not having a graduate school, we still have all of the "main" classes like Real and Real II, Complex, Topology, Algebra and Algebra II (Rep Theory). Also, at a lot of the schools I emailed faculty that I wanted to work with -- hopefully that helps at all.

Applying to Where:
Super Reach (Probably no chance):
UC Berkeley - Rejected 2/4, direct email
MIT - Rejected 2/7, direct email
Stanford - Rejected 2/19, direct email
UCLA - Rejected 2/13, sent email inquiry

Still a big reach/reach (I'm guessing 1-10% maximum chance, maybe Michigan because they have a big class?):
Caltech - Rejected 2/8, direct email
Cornell - Waitlisted 1/31, sent email inquiry, rejected 3/11, direct email
Brown - Rejected 2/1, received email to check portal
Yale - Rejected 2/4, received email to check portal
UPenn - Rejected 2/25, received email to check portal
Michigan - Rejected 3/4, direct email

Target hopefully? (To me that means around 10-25% chance):
UC San Diego - Rejected 3/3, received email to check portal
Minnesota Twin Cities - Waitlisted 3/2, sent email inquiry, accepted 5/11, direct email, attending!! :D :D
Washington - Rejected 3/9, direct email
Stony Brook - Rejected 3/2, received email to check portal
UC Davis - Rejected 5/10, received email to check portal
UC Irvine - Waitlisted 2/7, direct email, rejected 3/2, received email to check portal
Dartmouth - Rejected 2/2, received email to check portal
Utah - Rejected 3/5, received email to check portal

Safer/Still Target (Hopefully 25-40% chance):
Boulder - Waitlisted 2/22, received email to check portal, withdrew 3/18
UC Santa Barbara - Rejected 3/10, received email to check portal

Masters Programs:
Cambridge Part III - Rejected 2/3, direct email
Stony Brook - Accepted 3/16, direct email
UW Madison - Accepted 4/4, direct email
Michigan - Interview request 4/5, direct email, accepted 4/7, during interview
UC Irvine -
Utah -

If my guesses are right for my chances, I should have at least a 76% chance of getting in somewhere. Not sure how good those estimates are though haha. That number isn't super reassuring, but it's not too bad; especially since I think I really shot high, but my professors are hopeful. I definitely have the advantage of being able to apply to a ton of places. I'm planning on reapplying next year if I don't get in this year, since I'm hoping to have something for the awards/recognitions category, a publication from my REU, and more math courses on my transcript. I've gotten mixed reviews on if having graduated will hurt my chances or not of getting in.

I would love any feedback that anybody has.

Good luck to everybody!!

3/4: Not my favorite feeling I've ever had. Heading for 0/20, that's gotta be at least close to some sort of record. Welp, masters time for a year 8)
3/11: The "waitlisted" for Cornell just means I got the same email everyone else did, but I wasn't sure what else to call it.
4/5: I know they're just unfunded masters programs, but honestly, it feels really good to finally have some good news. Hopefully starting (or even completing) a masters will help my application in the next couple of cycles.
5/11: I can't believe it!! Out of nowhere, Minnesota accepted me almost a month after the 4/15 deadline. Absolute miracle lol. I guess this just shows that as long as you haven't heard a no, there's still a chance!

Undergrad Institution: Large Public, strong ranking
Major(s): Applied Mathematics
Minor(s): Physics
GPA: 3.6 out of 4.0 (3.8 major)
Type of Student: DWM

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 169 (94%)
V: 160 (85%)
W: 6.0 (99%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: N/A
M: Could not take thanks to Covid.

TOEFL Score: N/A

Program Applying: Applied Mathematics

Research Experience: Started working in a quantum physics lab in high school studying crystals and continued that until early into my undergrad. That opportunity resulted in two papers and a poster/presentation at an APS conference. Did some condensed matter physics research at my school and then moved on to work with a different professor on a project that applies structural balance theory and data science to analyze international political structures. No papers from those last two.

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Couple minor honors recognitions for GPA, nothing significant.

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Have been a tutor and section leader for a math honors society, a couple companies, and my own university. Tutored all lower division math and physics classes at the school, but more recently have moved to a private setting where I teach high school math, ACT, and SAT prep.

Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Took a grad class that taught statistical methods for physicists, spent a summer at a Harvard program in HS, was vice president of my Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter, and finished undergrad in three years and one quarter (not sure if that actually helps or not, we'll see).

Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Currently seeking work as a data analyst to get some industry experience and gain clarity as to whether I want to pursue academia or industry after the completion of my graduate degree. Hopefully this is seen as a proactive step while filling my time between undergrad and grad.

Applying to Where:

NYU - rejected
MIT - rejected
UCSD - rejected
UCLA - rejected
CU Boulder - rejected
Colorado State - accepted
U Washington - rejected from PhD but admitted to Masters
U Michigan - Ann Arbor - rejected
Colorado School of Mines - accepted
U Wisconsin - Madison - rejected
U Chicago - consideration for Masters
Northwestern - consideration for Masters

NOTE: Looking back, I think I made a few mistakes. I was too aggressive in applying to such highly ranked programs, and believe I both overestimated myself and underestimated their selectiveness. If you are reading this and are currently applying, apply to more safety schools as well (yes I know the process sucks, still do it). Secondly, I should not have graduated early to work as a data analyst. It is good in terms of industry experience, but I strongly believe my chances of admission would have increased if I had stayed and taken many more grad classes (I only took one).

To be entirely fair, I am quite content with my two acceptances, but I feel like it's important to point out my mistakes to the next round of applicants. When you read this thread, don't allow it to make you too anxious. Collect the data, learn from our mistakes, and shoot your shot. I wish you nothing but the best of luck.

Undergrad Institution: Ivy
Major(s): Pure math
Minor(s):
GPA: 3.82
Type of Student: Asian International

GRE Revised General Test: N/A
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: N/A
TOEFL Score: N/A

Program Applying: math PhD

Research Experience: No experience. Did some reading projects in class

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Nothing particular (Dean's List, etc)

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Not really other than seminars in my school

Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I did take most undergraduate courses and will have taken 4 grad courses upon graduation.

Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I have a lot of P grades due to covid. I did independent study during the summer and I wrote it in my statement of purpose. Not sure if this will help.

Applying to Where:

10%
UCLA - 3/11 submitted 3/11 rejected
Berkeley - submitted 2/4 rejected

15%
UCSD - submitted 3/3 rejected
Purdue - submitted seems to be in a long waitlist
U Washington - submitted 3/9 rejected
Cornell - submitted 1/31 rejected
UPenn - submitted 2/28 rejected
Stony Brook - submitted 3/3 rejected
Rutgers - submitted technically on a waitlist, but not likely to make it
Brown - submitted 2/1 rejected

25%
UCSB - submitted 3/10 rejected
WashU - submitted I was told that they will send out rejections on April 15

It's been tough, so hopefully, I get in at least one. I just want to continue my study of math.

2/28 Update: It seems that no school wants me. Well. It's so sad but it's okay, although I won't apply in the next cycle.
3/10 Update: Even though I did not have any research experience, I am beginning to think that one of the professors wrote badly about me that crucially affected my application
3/15 Update: For whoever watches this; I think my coursework is not lesser than people who got into top schools. I think what people usually say is right; it is very important to have a research direction in your application, research experience and great recommendation letters.

Undergrad Institution: private not well known for math
Major(s): double major in comp sci and math
Minor(s):
GPA: 4.0 out of 4.0
Type of Student: International Asian Male

GRE Revised General Test: Didn't take it. English is my second language and this whole thing makes no sense to me :( Glad that I got away with it due to covid.
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: 89 percentile... Didn't sumbit the score unless required to

Program Applying: Pure math?? Algebraic geometry and/or algebraic combinatorics. (I guess some people count combinatorics as applied math)

Research Experience: Did an REU at my institution the first summer. Learned a lot but wasn't very productive in terms of research. Did 2 other REUs later and resulted in 2 papers accepted to well known journals and 1 paper still being written up. One paper got accepted after the application deadline so not so sure if it'll help :(
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Received a scholarship from my undergrad institution that covers my tuition. (Seriously, why do you guys make college so expensive in the States??) Anticipate to graduate with highest honor and received highest honor from budapest semesters in math (Great program with so much fun! Highly recommend it!)
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: 20+ grad classes. Might have strong recommendations. Wrote to a few professors whom I really wish to work with and some of them got back to me! Presented at JMM and received an "outstanding poster award." Doesn't mean much but might show that I have a good taste in formating a poster??

Applying to Where: (Color use here is welcome)
Donation
MIT
Harvard
UC Berkeley
UChicago -- rejected on Jan 14. They don't send you an email. You'd have to log in your portal to find out about your rejection lol. Weird school
Cornell
Columbia

High Reach
UMich - Ann Arbor
UMinn - Twin Cities
UWash - Seattle
Brown
UCLA

(One of my letter writers said that for each of the above 5 programs classified as "High Reach" for me, I'd have about a 15% chance of getting in.. Assuming these events are independent, 1 - 0.85^5 = 0.56 > 0.5. Sounds great.)

Reach
Northeastern
UC Davis
U of Utah

Places outside of the U.S.
Toronto
Cambridge (Part III)
Oxford
Berlin Math School -- accepted on Jan 21. Thought not getting an interview request while others did meant rejection. Turned out I was wrong...

I don't think any program should be listed as safety or match for myself because the admission is so random and I don't think I'll have a >50% chance anywhere.

Good luck everyone!

Undergrad Institution: Large Public University
Major(s): Mathematics
Minor(s): Physics
GPA: 3.814 out of 4.00 overall (4.0 in math)
Type of Student: DWM

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 167 (89%)
V: 156 (72%)
W: 4.0 (54%)

GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M:
730 (62%) (wasn’t a great performance for me, got an hour of sleep the night before due to nerves)

(I only applied with GRE scores if it was basically required, as I did not think they would be helpful for the schools I am applying to.)

Program Applying: Pure Math (Differential Geometry/Geometric Analysis is my focus, but I also mention that I have (less specific) interests in algebra/algebraic geometry/representation theory when applicable in other applications)

Research Experience: Worked with a professor (at my university) for ~8 months where I studied Riemannian Geometry, and then we worked on a research problem. The write up for it is almost done, but no publication yet. We are planning on doing more research in the spring semester. Also participated in an REU more related to combinatorics/representation theory. Lastly I had done a research/independent study with another professor in knot theory after sophomore year.

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Part of the university and mathematics honors programs. Also was a meritorious winner of the ICM 2019. I am now realizing that I forgot to mention dean's list on my applications, as I basically made it every applicable semester....

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Was a tutor for the university in both mathematics and physics. I also was a grader for a differential equations class.

Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: The professors I have done research/independent studies with all wrote recommendation letters. Also had a fourth recommender for a few schools after he offered to write me letters. Two of my recommenders did their PhD at Brown (which is one of my top choices), and the fourth recommender did their PhD at MIT. I have also taken 10 graduate courses at the time of applying, and will take another two in the spring. I also attended the Budapest Semesters (was spring 2020 though, so we were sent home halfway through and had to finish online). I also attended seminars in topology/geometry at my school, as well as a few in algebra, to learn about current research. I discussed this a bit in my SOP as well.

Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: For GPA, my school used plus/minus grading, and gives an A+ a 4.333. But, cumulative GPAs are capped at 4.0 so it is still a 4.0 scale? Also the grad program is relatively strong here (about top 50 depending on ranking), so hopefully having done well here will help?

Applying to Where:

MIT Rejected 2/7 (direct email)
Berkeley Rejected 2/4 (direct email in my spam folder)
NYU 3/22 Admitted to Masters (email to check portal) Declined
Brown Rejected 2/1 (email to check portal)
Duke Rejected 2/2 (email to check portal)
UIUC Rejected 2/11 (direct email)
UC San Diego Rejected 3/10 (email to check portal)
University of Minnesota - Twin Cities Rejected 4/19
Johns Hopkins Rejected 2/9 (email to check portal)
University of Washington Rejected 3/10 (direct email, was also on portal)
Stony Brook Invited to an interview! 2/14 (emailed by graduate director) Unofficially rejected 3/5 (emailed the graduate director) Officially rejected 4/11
Rice Rejected 3/29
The Graduate Center, CUNY Rejected 4/16 (forgot to withdraw lol)
University of Oregon Rejected 2/3 (direct email, was also on portal)
Notre Dame Rejected 2/25 (email to check portal)
Michigan State Accepted! 3/1 (direct email) [/color]ATTENDING!

Thoughts: As time passes on, I am getting more and more nervous that I was too aggressive with the schools I applied too (as they are all unfortunately difficult to get into), and will be rejected from every school. Hopefully I have applied to enough schools to mitigate that concern, but only time will tell. I am also annoyed at myself for not applying for more scholarships (barely missed the GRFP unfortunately), which unfortunately might hurt me a bit/make me less competitive. One hope I have was the main professor I did research with said he wouldn't be surprised either way if I got into Duke or was rejected from it, and that Rice would be a good target, so hopefully that is accurate (as they are both fantastic programs).

Update 2/3: While I can’t say that Brown and Duke were unexpected, U Oregon through me off guard, as I was told that it would be a pretty safe school for me. After learning that a bunch of other programs I applied to are starting to give out unofficial acceptances and what not, I can’t help to think that it might be pretty likely that I don’t get accepted anywhere. Its okay, and I may apply again next year, but I will have to give it some very serious thought if that is the case.

Update 2/25: This definitely is not a very fun process. My understanding is that Stony Brook has started sending out offers, so I am definitely disappointed in myself - as I feel like I may have blown my chance at attending graduate school. Hopefully I am on a waiting list, but who knows? In any case, I still have a good few decisions left, so hopefully something will work out.

Update 3/1: I just got my first acceptance - a huge weight off my shoulders. They also have great faculty in my area, so I am excited!

Update 3/22: Kind of funny to get admitted to the Masters at NYU, definitely a soft rejection though.

Update 4/17: Definitely very excited to attend MSU! I realized I had forgotten to withdraw the UMN and CUNY applications after I accepted, so maybe I should withdraw from UMN, although it is quite clear that they did not really want me.

How did you find out? Did you get something from them and/or know other people who did?

And I know with 99.99% certainty that you're a troll.

Unfortunately the 0.01% outcome has occurred. It seems, for once, that the guy yelling in all-caps is not a troll. I was accepted last night. I have no idea how it works though, like if they'll keep sending more offers in waves or something.

Is getting an interview to an applied math PhD program generally a good sign, or do most people/a random sample receive one?

It depends on the school I think. Which school?
