College Parks' math department has already sent out acceptances, or at the very least have already decided on their list and will be sending them out very soon.josenelson13 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 29, 2022 3:19 pmBy College Park do you mean University of Maryland at College Park? I applied to the math PhD program there and has not heard back from them (neither an acceptance nor a rejection). According to my portal, the application is still under review. Re: 2022 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
This won't answer your question for the pure math, but here's some food for thought. Their official FAQ says "Most applicants should hear news concerning the decision on their application for Fall admission by late March/early April," which isn't super helpful. On a personal note, I applied to the pure program. I paid my fee and forget to hit submit, and it took admissions until this week to actually get back to me and let me submit. Unless someone has personal info, this suggests to me that they're either close to sending things out and are tying up loose ends, or they not far in at all (or no one is gonna read my application in which case this info is totally useless...).josenelson13 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 29, 2022 7:28 pmI applied to the math PhD program there and has not heard back from them (neither an acceptance nor a rejection). That's rough. I still think that no news are good news, but, in all fairness, I'm starting to get concerned seeing people getting accepted while I still haven't heard back from any uni that I applied to. btw, did you submit your GRE scores to Maryland? If yes, would you be willing to share them here (or through DM)?fakeName wrote: ↑Sat Jan 29, 2022 7:35 pmThis won't answer your question for the pure math, but here's some food for thought. Re: 2022 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
I'm applying mostly for PDE. I have one (group) paper on fluid dynamicy PDE and am studying navier stokes in a reading/research class this semester, so if I recall, I think I said "I wanna do PDE, potentially fluid dynamic style PDE." I feel like my app seems pretty strong, and yet no acceptances in spite of multiple of my schools sending out their first wave. Maybe my letters were less good than expected, or I'm unlucky, or it's too early, literally who knows. All that's left to do is hope and wait!josenelson13 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 29, 2022 8:23 pmThese are quite impressive scores. Which area are you applying to? Hopefully it's not the same as mine haha

Re: 2022 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
I got an email from someone on the admissions committee. There was another email where they CC'ed a bunch of other admitted applicants and it looked to be around 15 or so people. I'm not sure how many people they usually admit in general so I'm not sure if there will be another wave or not.ish77 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 31, 2022 1:45 pmCongrats on getting into Brown and Ohio!YellowBee wrote: ↑Tue Jan 04, 2022 12:11 pmNote: I removed some of my personal info for privacy reasons, but I would be happy to DM.

Re: 2022 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
Can someone share what all universities might conduct interviews as part of admissions review, prior to offering admissions? For example, Duke conducts interviews (I saw many people being invited and interviewed these days). And recently, UMichigan sent a generic e-mail to all the applicants informing them that it plans to send interview calls to 10% of the applicants of pure math PhD from which it will choose 5% to offer admission (by 10th March). Does someone know any other school that may conduct interviews like this before admitting? Can someone comment that in general, how typical is it for US universities to conduct interviews before offering admissions? Also, are these "interviews" supposed to test a candidate and gauge his/her mathematical knowledge or are they more of some interaction to get a pulse of the guy/girl they plan to admit to their program? Thanks.

My experience has been that they just want to get to know you. They'll definitely ask about your background and why this program. But no mathematical knowledge test. This is based on 3 interviews with Tufts, NJIT, and Stony Brook. So take that as you will.ekansh2912 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 31, 2022 4:26 pmCan someone share what all universities might conduct interviews as part of admissions review, prior to offering admissions? Thanks.

Program Applying: Pure Math
Research Experience: Finishing up a senior project in algebraic topology. Simultaneously did an REU online and research with a professor at my school in algebraic geometry. We were able to get two papers published in well known journals. Currently working on submitting another paper, preprint available on arxiv.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Recipient of a national scholarship for college, and received a scholarship that basically pays for my 4 years of college from an organization associated with my high school. Took the Putnam once, got double digit score but nothing super impressive.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: TA-ed for single variable as well as multi variable calculus and graded for undergraduate real analysis and combinatorics.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I've taken varieties of math classes from category theory, representation theory to functional analysis and differential topology. I think I have a good exposure to the basic concepts of every common fields, I did go a bit more in depth in algebraic geometry, algebraic topology and category theory. I have taken 5 graduate courses so far, 2 current, and 2 in spring. I think all 3 of my letter writers are pretty well known in their field (2 in algebraic geometry and 1 in algebraic topology). Most of the departments I'm applying to have professors that are direct descendants of my letter writers. This might help idk.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I think I covered everything above, don't have any other life-changing incidents to add here honestly.

Has there been any word from the University of Maryland for pure math? I got an unofficial email from one of the faculties in Early Jan where he told me that I was recommended to the Graduate admissions and I should let him know other offers that I might get. I had no prior contact with this concerned faculty. I am just super anxious because of this whole ordeal

Re: 2022 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
I got an email titled "Waitlisted at Johns Hopkins Math PhD Program," and there was no update on the portal. One thing they said was "We are hoping to be able to admit some students from the waitlist, but whether we're able to do this will depend on several factors outside of our control (e.g. results of grant applications), so I'm not able to guess when I might have an update for you."username2140 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 04, 2022 3:24 amHow did you hear about JHU? I haven’t heard anything from them (so likely rejection lol), and I also don’t see anything official.

No worries, but that is good to know - thank you!
Re: U of Arizona, U of Georgia, CUNY, UMass, MSU
Anyone got any offer/rejection or have any other info about the pure math PhD program at any one of these - U of Arizona, U of Georgia, CUNY, UMass, MSU?

Re: U of Arizona, U of Georgia, CUNY, UMass, MSU
I know multiple people who heard back from UMass on 1/21. I have not heard anything, so I’m assuming rejection.
Re: U of Arizona, U of Georgia, CUNY, UMass, MSU
Ohh
Is it possible that date of submitting your application makes a difference? The deadline for UMass was 10th Jan and I submitted my application just few days before.
Do you know around what time they submitted their applications?
Re: U of Arizona, U of Georgia, CUNY, UMass, MSU
I wouldn't assume a rejection from UMass just yet. From past years it looks like they continue to admit people well in to late Feb/early March. It also looks like they wait to give out their rejections until super late so its too unpredictable as this point.Galois7 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 04, 2022 3:46 pmOhh

Accepeted to UCLA!
Re: 2022 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
I am in a similar situation as you. They are many smart undergraduates in the math department who get lots of A in grad courses. And some of them are interested in the same field as me so I have to be careful not to apply many places in common. Good luck to you!GreekAlphabet.Expert wrote: ↑Wed Dec 08, 2021 1:17 amUndergrad Institution: US Private

Minor(s): Physics
GPA: 4.41/5
Type of Student: International Male
GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170
V: 149, this would look much better if I get 1 more point
W: 4
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 910
TOEFL Score: waived due to 4-yr degree in US
Program Applying: pure math
Research Experience: Working on a required thesis for the degree, 1 REU and 1 paper published as author.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Almost made the IMO team for my country, Putnam hm, government scholarship from my country as well, pays for my tuition/housing/insurance alongside university need-based scholarship (it's about 10-15k a year). Won a couple coding competition in my country before college.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Accepted for an internship at a major bank in the US but I decided not to go, probably burned a bridge but whatever. Never graded, proctored or taught classes.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Currently taking 2 grad classes and completed 6. I think my recommenders are pretty famous, but not super famous.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: My department has lots of smarter people (undergraduates, graduate students here are infinitely smarter) than me, but majority of them don't want to go for a doctorate degree. Those who do want to pursue a Ph.D - I know where they are applying so I try to avoid applying to too many places that they are also applying. Maybe there are no such thing as "quota for every school" when it comes to admissions, but one can never be too careful. I wanted to stick around at my school since I love it but I was encouraged to applying elsewhere, weird.

I have the same overall GPA and major GPA as you! But I heard that overall GPA is not very important in math Ph.D. application?coolar wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 1:28 amSchool: Small Liberal Arts

Note: I only applied to so many big reach schools because my parents went to one of them and two of my recommenders went to two others and convinced me to apply. Unless money is not a problem, I would advise only applying to 1-2 big reach schools/dream schools.
Edit 1/27: Extremely excited about getting in somewhere. I did not think anyone would want me due to my unknown school and low overall GPA. I withdrew a few apps and deleted them from the list above.
