2022 REU Programs
Last year's REU thread was widely-used, so I'm making one for this year.
All 2022 REU-related content should go here. I have hardly thought about applications yet, so I have nothing more to say.

Re: 2022 REU Programs
I love how the University of Michigan made you submit a document talking about your research experiences and then ALSO put a text box to put...research experiences. lol

Re: 2022 REU Programs
Junior, only studying Pure Math. Domestic student, white male, parents never went to college and barely speak English, so I am first-gen. VERY low GPA in undergrad courses (I had a really, really, really terrible time before I transferred) but much higher GPA in grad courses at my new school. I went to a top LAC but then transferred to a top 30 public uni. Never been accepted into an REU program before, so this is my last chance.
I am mainly interested in number theory (especially analytic) and algebraic topology.
Applications:
THE ABSOLUTE DREAM!!! UVA applied January 17th emailed Professor Ono, was told I was on the wait-list February 21st, was told getting in was unlikely February 22nd emailed Professor Ono, rejected March 1st, "all slots filled"
THE ABSOLUTE DREAM!!! UMich applied February 3rd accepted by email February 28th attending, accepted offer March 2nd
UMich Dearborn applied February 4th
UCSB applied February 4th
UC Davis applied February 4th
GA Tech applied February 4th accepted by email March 5th
UMN Twin Cities applied January 20th rejected by mass email March 10th
DIMACS applied January 19th
Williams College SMALL (Number Theory & Probability) applied February 2nd rejected unofficially February 12th (didn't make the shortlist, verified with Prof. Miller)
Yale SUMRY applied January 30th didn't get an acceptance by February 16th, emailed Dr. Adelstein, was told I was rejected
Tufts VERSEIM applied January 31st
HUJI applied February 13th never got an interview
TAMU applied January 20th
Oregon State applied February 21st
Cornell SPUR applied February 21st withdrew application March 3rd
Rose-Hulman applied February 21st
Kansas State SUMAR applied February 20th
CUNY Baruch College applied February 15th
Pomona PRiME applied February 5th rejected February 28th by mass-email
UT Tyler applied February 22nd accepted by email March 7th
(not an REU anymore) UChicago applied February 9th rejected February 25th by mass-email
(not an REU) IAS PCMI applied January 20th accepted by email March 17th
I started applications very early, back in November, because I am extremely, extremely serious about getting into REUs.

Re: 2022 REU Programs
Year: Third year/senior (graduating early this fall)
Institution: Top 5 public
GPA: 3.89
Major: Mathematics
Minors: Computer Engineering, and another minor that is specific to my institution so I won't mention it, but it's not very relevant.
Type of Student: domestic white female
Research: I've been doing bioinformatics research with the same lab for about 1.5 years. We are in preparation to publish a paper where I would be first author. I have never done an REU and this is my last chance to do one.
Coursework: (all undergrad level) Real Analysis (2 semesters), Number Theory, Computer Organization, Data Structures and Algorithms, Abstract Algebra, Complex Analysis, Linear Algebra, Mathematical Logic, Elementary Differential Equations, Calc 3
Other: I did a software development internship at NASA last summer. I've also been a TA for Calc 1 and this is my second year as president of a mathematics related student organization. I also won an award at a large hackathon and have received a bunch of university awards/scholarships. Two of my recommenders (research mentor/biology faculty member, internship supervisor) know me very well and I have another recommendation from a mathematics faculty member who I had for a couple classes.

Re: 2022 REU Programs
Year: Junior
Institution: US Public, transferred from an institution outside US
GPA: 3.89 Major 3.95
Major: Mathematics
Minors: Computer Science
Type of Student: International Asian Male
Research: One summer school in algebraic geometry, two directed reading with notes, much independent learning
Coursework: undergrad courses: analysis 1&2, algebra 1&2, linear algebra 1&2, topology, complex analysis, intro combi
grad courses: two topic courses, algebra 2(skipped 1), algebraic topology 1&2, rep theory
Other: two semesters of peer mentor and one semester of tutor. One of the recommenders knows me well and I believe he likes me, so hopefully the letter will be strong.
REUs I dream for
UChicago Submitted Jan 31 rejected Feb 25(informed I was near the top and encouraged to apply for their graduate program)
Cornell Summited Feb 2
UMN Submitted Feb 4 unofficially shortlisted(email them) Feb 25
UVa Submitted Feb 4 unofficially rejected Mar 1(Prof. Ono posted the list of participants on FB)
OSU ROMUS
Gatech Submitted Feb 4
REUs not that attractive:
SMALL (Knot Theory) Submitted Jan 31 rejected Feb 20
UC Davis submitted Feb 14
UM Duluth submitted Feb 14 rejected Feb 21
Brown icerm submitted Feb 14
There are not many choices for international students, as all programs are NSF-funded, and international students are accepted on an ad hoc basis for most of these exceptions. Therefore I think I might be rejected by all of them : ( I will be really happy if I am accepted by any of them. I will be appreciated if you could inform me of any other program accepting international students.

Yes, UChicago lost its NSF REU funding, that's why on MathPrograms it's called something like the "University of Chicago Summer Mathematics Program" instead of "University of Chicago REU" this year.raremeatsandcheeses wrote: ↑Fri Feb 11, 2022 7:10 pmNot an REU anymore?AGrothendieck wrote: ↑Fri Feb 04, 2022 8:56 am...

Has anyone heard back from Yale SUMRY? They said they’d send out acceptances by the 16th and I haven’t heard anyone mention anything so far.

Re: 2022 REU Programs
Year: Third year
Institution: Well-known(ish) LAC
GPA: Top 10% of my class (for anonymity and since we have severe grade deflation)
Major: Mathematics
Type of Student: domestic white male
Research: One summer in experimental particle physics, paid, but no real production. One program similar to PolyMath, that was essentially an unpaid REU, a final report, unpublished. One NSF REU (with people on this thread considering it a top choice) with a publication, and submission to a top journal
Coursework: (all undergrad level) Linear Algebra, Vector Calculus, Discrete Structures, Algebraic Combinatorics, Abstract Algebra, Complex Analysis, Topology, Real Analysis, Galois Theory, Discrete Geometry, Algebraic Topology, Independent Study on combinatorics, Algebraic Geometry, Commutative Algebra and Homological Algebra, and Real Functions and Measures (the last 3 were done “abroad” virtually)
Other: Worked as a tutor for all the classes I’ve taken, course assistant/grader for a sizable subset of those classes. I’ve also been a drop-in tutor, note taker, and lab TA for intro physics.
Applied:

Yale SUMRY

Re: 2022 REU Programs
Good luck in your applications! Have you asked Prof. Adams about your admission decision or did you assume you were rejected because you were not shortlisted?physicsofcomica wrote: ↑Wed Feb 16, 2022 2:56 amYear: Third year
Institution: Well-known(ish) LAC
GPA: Top 10% of my class (for animosity and since we have severe grade deflation)
Applied:
Williams SMALL (knot theory) rejected unofficially

Year: Junior
Institution: top20 liberal arts college
GPA: overall 3.9+, major 4.0
major: cs & math
type of student: first-generation asian female, F-1 visa
for international students: my institution provides funding for students doing research off-campus; I’ve sent emails to basically every program I’ve applied and asked whether they take self-funded students. If a program I didn’t apply then it probably doesn’t take self-funded students (for example UCSB, iastate, clemson)
research interests: pretty open to options, prefer algebra, logic a bit
research experience: 1yr on generative machine learning model
coursework: linear, multi cal in linear, probability, abstract algebra, analysis, topology, representation theory, functional analysis; programming language, computer security, compiler
letter: 1 from math 1 from cs professor, both know me fairly well, should be strong letter
other: leader of 2 student clubs; worked as a tutor of math/cs for 2yrs
Accepted:
Texas States University, algebra (Mar 3) - attending
James Madison University, unsupervised machine learning (Shortlisted, Mar 1)
Rejected:
Baruch College (CUNY), Mathematics (emailed asked about it, told rejected, Mar 5)
UVA topology (emailed asked about it, told rejected, Mar 5)

Re: 2022 REU Programs
Curious,
Where all have acceptances been sent out for? When can we expect the majority of acceptances to be sent out (generally for all programs).

Research: Did Polymath REU last summer. We were able to prove some original results and the paper is in progress. Also did directed reading in differential geometry but nothing original was produced.
Coursework (including the ones still in progress): real analysis I-II, functional analysis, abstract algebra I-II, vector calculus, galois theory, PDEs, algebraic topology, algebraic geometry, general measure theory.
Recommendations: I expect my LoRs to be strong. One recommender is well-known in his field and I took 3 classes and did directed reading with him. He seems to care so much about his students and thinks highly of me. Another letter writer is my Polymath REU advisor from last year. And the last one specifically told me that his letter would be short (I only did an independent study with him) but VERY good.
Other: Idk if it is important but I learned some pure math in high school so I was able to skip some classes (like intro to proof, abstract algebra and topology). I am doing BSM right now so that might be a plus.
Applying to Where: (more to come)
Williams SMALL (Knot Theory) - SUBMITTED 2/1 - REJECTED 2/20
UMichigan - SUBMITTED 2/3
Fields - SUBMITTED 2/10
UChicago - SUBMITTED 2/10
IST Austria - SUBMITTED 2/14

Georgia Institute of Technology - SUBMITTED 2/15
David Harold Blackwell Summer Research Institute - SUBMITTED 2/15
Minnesota Twin Cities - SUBMITTED 2/16
UC Davis - SUBMITTED 2/19

Any idea what UVA Topology means by preferring 'people with no research experience'? I have some but don't have any publications.

Re: 2022 REU Programs
Are decisions just super late this year? This seems like its following the same timeline as last year (which was apparently late according to my obsessive browsing of REU forums). Starting to get worried as I’ve only heard back from two programs, and one of those two is still sending out decisions.
Re: 2022 REU Programs
Yeah I'm starting to get very worried and anxious about getting in somewhere. If you don't mind me asking, which 2 programs did you hear back from?qpu wrote: ↑Wed Feb 23, 2022 2:40 pmAre decisions just super late this year? SMALL NT & Prob (2nd shortlist, they are meeting about funding this week, then more offers will be sent out from the shortlist based on the results of this meeting) and SUMRY (rejected, no official letter, I emailed for my results)MathQueen wrote: ↑Wed Feb 23, 2022 4:02 pmYeah I'm starting to get very worried and anxious about getting in somewhere. Probably. PhD decisions came out late this year, according to some people I know who applied this year.qpu wrote: ↑Wed Feb 23, 2022 2:40 pmAre decisions just super late this year?
