Recommendation from non-math professor

I worked for two years in a some sort of computational biology/neuroscience lab directly with the PI (relatively new professor, not known much in his field let alone math). Our work ended up to be published in a major journal in the field. He has a high opinion of me.

Will his recommendation be helpful when I apply for math programs? I think he is my strongest recommender.

I had two non math recs and two math recs. My strongest were probably the non math recs and it worked out fine for me (I’m very happy with UA math)

If it is your stronger one it may work, for me I had the same situation, but in this case my weaker letter was from a non researcher, and I only got accepted in one university. I am almost sure that it was due to this letter, as I think the rest of my application was pretty decent/strong. But still I am not quite sure as this process is quite random sometimes. Anyways, if you are applying to pure math it may be better to have a letter of mathematicians.
