What schools ask for mGRE for fall 2023

Post by Dragan » Fri Sep 02, 2022 2:44 pm

Hey folks

What is the situation regarding the mGRE for the coming cycle of fall 2023? Currently, I know of only UCLA and Harvard who ask for it. Are there any others? Do they even consider applications for people who weren't able to take it because it is not offered in their area?

Texas A&M and Penn State are the two that I remember from my searches.

I asked A&M if they can consider applications without the GRE (maybe at a disadvantage) but got no reply, so unlikely to apply.

Well, there are those schools who say it is "strongly recommended". To be honest I think this is no different than "required"; because they will prefer the applicants who did the mGRE.

FWIW I got a reply for A&M through another email - they accept applications without the mGRE provided you were unable to take it.

Do they mean that we have to provide some sort of physical proof that we couldn't take it? Like it was canceled or something?

I don't think they're *that* fussed because they just told me to put a note on my statement of purpose that my nearest GRE centre is in another country. In my case it was sort of "my fault" since there's only one test centre in my country that fills up the day of opening and I hadn't started considering US PhDs until a few days later, (!!) but they seemed sympathetic.

Ahhh ok I see! Yeah my test centers canceled last minute but they were really far from me anyway. Do they still consider applications fully even if you don't have a gre sub score tho? Couldnt find any info on whether texas am is optional or recommended.

The website says required but their wording was "We do make exceptions sometimes. So please go ahead and apply so we can take a look.". I read from that that your application might/will be disadvantaged but it's not necessarily fatal. (it would be silly to reject an excellent candidate because they have no GRE sub when you're not a top top school who have dozens just as strong lined up, I've seen people with fairly modest (40%ish percentile) get into A&M anyway) It might be a problem if they don't recognise your university and need help contextualising your grades/GPA though, ig.
