Re: 2023 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
Institution: Well-known(ish) LAC
GPA: Top 10% of my class (for anonymity and since we have severe grade deflation)
Major: Mathematics
Type of Student: domestic white male
Research: One summer in experimental particle physics, paid, but no real production. One program similar to PolyMath, that was essentially an unpaid REU, a final report, unpublished. One NSF REU (with people on this thread considering it a top choice) with a publication, and submission to a top journal. International REU with a pretty famous mentor, publication upcoming.
Coursework: (all undergrad level) Linear Algebra, Vector Calculus, Discrete Structures, Algebraic Combinatorics, Abstract Algebra, Complex Analysis, Topology, Real Analysis, Galois Theory, Discrete Geometry, Algebraic Topology, Independent Study on combinatorics, Algebraic Geometry, Commutative Algebra and Homological Algebra, and Real Functions and Measures (the last 3 were done “abroad” virtually), and a senior thesis in combinatorics.
Other: I worked as a tutor for all the classes I’ve taken and a course assistant/grader for a sizable subset of those classes. I’ve also been a drop-in tutor, note taker, and lab TA for intro physics.
Program Applying: Pure Math/Applied Math PhD (Except Cambridge)
No GREs
Applied (in order of hearing back):
Cambridge Part III: Conditional Acceptance 12/14
Harvard SEAS: Interview 12/22 --> Reject 2/6
UChicago: Reject 1/13
Yale: Reject 1/20
BMS Phase I: Interview/Invitation to Berlin 1/20-->Waitlist
Harvard: Reject 1/27
Northwestern: Reject 1/28 (Expected, my SOP wasn't really that great)
Cornell: Reject 1/30
UCLA: Reject 2/1
UMN: Acceptance 2/2
Princeton: Reject 2/3
Washington: Reject 2/3
Dartmouth: Reject 2/6
JHU: Reject 2/8

Major(s): Math with Honors, Data Science
Minor(s): none
GPA: 3.46/4.0 (freshman in China); 4.0/4.0 (US)
Math GPA: not displayed on the transcript
Type of Student: International Asian Male
GRE Revised General Test: didn't submit except for UCs who "strongly recommend" it
Q: 169 (97%?)
V: 151 (49%?)
W: don't remember
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: didn't submit except for UCs who "strongly recommend" it
M: 860 (87%)
TOEFL Score: Waived thanks to a US degree
Program Applying: Pure Math
Research Experience: One year of reading with faculty, a summer REU at home university (no publication, just a poster presented at symposiums), and two directed readings with graduate students. All in harmonic analysis & analytic number theory
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Departmental scholarships, dean list every semester, first prize in Chinese College Mathematics Competition (CMC 2020, before transfer)
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Course assistant (tutor) of multiple advanced courses for two years (excellent feedback, an additional teaching letter submitted to some of the places), grader for measure theory, analysis II, and topology I.
Math Courses Taken: Almost all undergrad courses, all taken with honors; almost all graduate courses in analysis/PDE. 6 grad courses on the transcript, auditing more after applications to save some tuition (high for international!). Many talks in seminars and topic courses in the department (many thanks!!). Regular coding + applied math courses for the DS major.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help:

I received an email from Berkeley few hours ago. It seems like an unofficial offer. Anyone the same situation as me? Can't believe this is true

Any update from UIC?
Several people posted they got email from grad office asking if they are still interested. Did they hear any updates?

Judging by how many people who've received it and the fact that some acceptances have been out, you can probably safely assume we're on a waitlist rn.corkquark wrote: ↑Wed Feb 08, 2023 11:54 amI also got that email on the 28th of Jan. I only know of one at Grad Cafe which might be a prof unofficially telling an applicant or someone trolling.
I went to the Indiana open house yesterday and their early decision process was described to us. It was exactly the same as the UIC email we got.

Re: 2023 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
Yeah, so I received an acceptance from UIC (lol I was the one who posted that on grad cafe). I got that email from the DGS with the questions about my interest and updates on 1/28 and then on 2/6 I got an email from the DGS saying that they are making me an offer (haven't gotten the official letter yet) with university fellowship.hilberthotel wrote: ↑Wed Feb 08, 2023 2:21 pmAre you sure some acceptances have been out?

Hope this helps clarify a bit. I don't know anything about other offers they're making.

This makes me optimistic about the fellowship shortlist part. If you were offered a fellowship, it certainly wasn't a waitlist emailemptiest.set wrote: ↑Wed Feb 08, 2023 2:36 pmYeah, so I received an acceptance from UIC (lol I was the one who posted that on grad cafe). I am sad about not getting the fellowship, but makes me positive about an early offer
Edit - Congratulations on the offer!

I only know of one at Grad Cafe which might be a prof unofficially telling an applicant or someone trolling.
I went to the Indiana open house yesterday and their early decision process was described to us. It was exactly the same as the UIC email we got.
Hope this helps clarify a bit. I don't know anything about other offers they're making.
I am sad about not getting the fellowship, but makes me positive about an early offer
Edit - Congratulations on the offer!

Yes, but I'm guessing most of their applications came before 01/01 since that was the deadline for full consideration for fellowships. I think this is historically around when they start sending early acceptances and then continue for about a month. Also, Indiana said they would be getting back to some people this week, and their applications were due on 01/15, so it's not unreasonable.

Oh shit, idk if i submitted my application in time for that. Did not know there was a first deadline :/Boplicity wrote: ↑Mon Feb 13, 2023 3:17 pmYes, but I'm guessing most of their applications came before 01/01 since that was the deadline for full consideration for fellowships. Re: 2023 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
Purdue had this exact same deadline thing where if you submit by Jan 1, your app gets consideration for fellowships. I didn't apply to Stony Brook but my guess is that while your app might not be considered for fellowships, you definitely will be considered for other financial aid packages such as TAships if you receive an admitxbq22 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 13, 2023 5:13 pmOh shit, idk if i submitted my application in time for that. Re: 2023 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
I have held out on doing this for so long but I think it's time to write up my own thingy here.
Undergrad Institution: Well known, not ivy, not amazing for math research but not bad either (though my advisor has told me that he knows of no one who has gotten into a T10 program from this institution in the last 15 years ). Known for grade deflation
Majors: Double majored in math and physics
GPA: 3.83
Math GPA: 4.0
Type of student Domestic White Male
GRE Did not take
Program Applying: Pure Math, mainly focused on geometry and mathematical physics
Research Experience: Two research projects in physics, no publications, writing an honours thesis on the geometry of gauge theory that is essentially a textbook (currently sits at 180 pages)
Math Courses Taken: Multi, Odes, Linear Algebra I and II, Differential Geometry of curves and surfaces, discrete maths, Real Analysis I/II.
Graduate Courses Taken: Grad QM I and II, Grad EM, Quantum Field Theory I and II, Mathematical Physics, Differential topology I and II, Graduate Algebra I and II, Topics in Geometry (I suspect my lack of a complex analysis course, and my heavier slant towards physics is hurting me mildly here)
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: 2 of my letters of recommendation should be very strong, another two should be good. I have given talks on gauge theory, and Yang-Mills theory in both the physics and math departments as well.
Applying to where: (in no particular order)
Harvard: Rejected
Caltech: Rejected
UCLA: Rejected
Duke: No interview (yet at least)Rejected
UPenn: No Open House InviteRejected
Oxford: No interview (yet at least) rejected
UC Berkely: Rejected (this one hurt me )
Stanford: Rejected
MIT: Rejected
Stony Brook: Rejected (this one was also painful. I got hopeful when I wasn't in the first round of rejections)
Washington: Rejected
Princeton: Rejected
UT Austin:
Oregon State
University of OregonAccepted!
UPittAccepted! Rejected Offer
NC StateAccepted! Rejected Offer
Cambridge Part ThreeAwaiting approval by PAO. Acceptance! Most likely will attend if Stony Brook doesn't work out. (I have been told that this is a good thing so we shall see at least). It was a good sign! If you get the awaiting approval by PAO, and don't here anything for longer than two weeks, email them and they might send an official offer. That's what I did.

I think last Thursday I heard from pitt, u of o, and my Cambridge portal opened.inaicecream wrote: ↑Mon Feb 13, 2023 6:44 pmWhen did you hear from Pitt?xbq22 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 13, 2023 5:48 pmI have held out on doing this for so long but I think it's time to write up my own thingy here.
