Notes
Definitely should have tried more on the mGRE. I also have no idea what is a reach match and safety at this point so kinda arbitrarily dumped them into buckets. Hope to get into mathematical modeling with ODEs or Networks
Is the interview usually apart of Duke's admissions process? If I didn't receive something from duke today does that mean I've effectively been rejected?
According to previous records, everyone who was directly admitted ( without getting into a waitlist) had an interview. However interview is not necessary for a place in waitlist. Also it seems that interview invitations were not sent out in a single day, so you could wait for another couple of days.
Are applied and pure math treated the same?

Graduate Institution 3 (1 course so far): Top 10 in math (U.S)
Major(s): BS in Mathematics
Major(s): MS in Mathematics

Undergraduate GPA: 3.81/4.0
Undergraduate math GPA:3.97/4.0
Graduate Institution 1 GPA :3.17/4.0 (this includes 2 Fs. This is explained in SOP)
Graduate Institution 2 GPA :4.0/4.0
Graduate Institution 3 GPA :4.33/4.0
Type of Student:Domestic, Male (white)

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 162 (73%)
V: 158 (78%)
W: 4.x0 (54%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: None
M: 780 (72%)

TOEFL Score: (xx = Rxx/Lxx/Sxx/Wxx) (if applicable)

Program Applying: Pure Math (Interest in Number Theory)

Research Experience: Wrote 25 page research paper in representation theory on Brauer-Fowler theorem. Not original research, but equivalent to a masters thesis. Did REU as undergraduate, no publication.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Highest Distinction in Mathematics (undergraduate). Cum Laude, Deans List all semesters (undergraduate)
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Adjunct math professor at local 4 year college for 2.5 years. Taught statistics, probability (with calculus), calculus 1 and 2 for math majors. Currently teaching Statistics and Calc 1 with applications. Also have 4+ years of tutoring work with company (for SAT, homework help, etc). Graduate teaching assistant for over 3 years. TA for abstract algebra, calc 1, calc 2. Grader for linear algebra, differential equations. Abstract algebra TA as an undergraduate.
Math Courses Taken: Graduate level: Abstract algebra, commutative algebra, algebraic number theory, linear algebra, representation theory, measure theory, complex analysis, topology, algebraic topology, logic. Undergraduate Level: Set theory, differential geometry, combinatorics, probability.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Passed 5 qualifying exams (1 more than necessary) while in previous PhD program. These are in algebra, linear algebra, topology, real analysis, complex analysis. I also have a solid programming/computer science background (python, java, machine learning, algorithms, data structures, theory of computation). Also, I have taken 2 graduate classes (and am currently enrolled in two for the spring) as a non-degree student at solid math universities (one top 10 school). Got A+s in both classes during the fall and got recommendation letters from these professors. Both should be very strong, however, the professor in one of the classes did not read my 25 page research paper for his class (minimum requirement was 5 pages, but I went above and beyond). I believe he at least scanned through it though (and I got a perfect score from the TA grader). I also have a recommendation from chair of the department at the local college where I teach.

Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I was in a PhD program for 3.5 years, but despite having a successful first two years, completing all qualifying exams, because of personal issues (mental health related), I quit with my masters, failing 2 courses in my last year. (stopped going to class). In my SOP I address this (I don't mention the mental health aspect). I talk about how I've grown personally in the last 6 years. I got rejected from all 18 schools applied to last year. But this is before my new classes and recommendations. I've also improved by SOP substantially (I believe by not going into the mental health details). I also did the Gres, and used this for some schools, though I don't know how much this will help (hopefully not hurt).

Please note that my background is rather non-traditional, and the information below may be of limited use for someone trying to apply to certain programs through the traditional route. It may be of more use to someone curious about potential pathways into graduate school in mathematics and/or statistics. Good luck to everyone!

Undergrad Institution: Top 50 university overall in USNWR
Graduate Institution: Harvard Law School
Major(s): Mathematics (Undergraduate); Empirical Legal Studies/Criminal Law/International Law/Human Rights Law (Harvard Law School doesn't have "majors" but these were some topics that I focused on, the first two being the most prevalent)
Minor(s): Political Science (undergraduate)
GPA: 3.894 (Undergraduate); Harvard Law School does not have traditional grades so no GPA is available.
Math GPA: N/A
Type of Student: Domestic Male Minority, USA; FGLI

GRE Revised General Test: Not taken.

Program Applying: Mathematical Statistics; PhD

Research Experience: Published some theorems in a single-authored paper in a refereed statistics journal last year; another preprint on high dimensional CLTs available on Arxiv. Various projects in Empirical Legal Research. Giving a talk next month in statistics.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Fulbright Scholar + funding from Harvard for various research projects in quantitative legal research.
Math Courses Taken: The usual real analysis fare (Rudin + Folland) and linear algebra; handful of stats courses including Causal Inference.

The list below is not exhaustive, will update as application season progresses.

Applying to Where: (Color use here is welcome)
Cambridge – Mathematical Statistics (PhD) / Interview invite on January 13; interview on January 18.
MIT - Applied Mathematics
Harvard – Statistics
Berkeley – Statistics / Interview Invite January 18; first interview January 29. Unofficial acceptance (department email) Feb 17.
Oxford – Statistics (DPhil) / Interview Invite January 20; interview January 25.

GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: not contributive, since I signed up once for fun at the beginning, without wny revision and even finished learning abstract algebra. When I can actually prepare myself for it, Covid policy prevented me from it.

Program Applying: (Applied) Math Ph.D. :D

Academic Experience: :)
  • 1 experience starts from sophomore summer til now, on Machine Learning in Dynamical Systems, or specifically, Reservoir Computing (in case anybody know that) (One Recommendation Letter by Supervisor)

  • Outstanding Peer Tutor
Pertinent Activities or Jobs:
  • Peer tutor of 7 courses ranging from Single Variable Calculus to Real Analysis
  • Teaching Assistant for 4 Calculus Series courses
  • Student Assistant at the Math Center of the School, help organize activities
Any Miscellaneous Points:
Only one offical Graduate-level course on Measure-based Stochastic Calculus (in a semester when I was visiting  ), since my undergrad institution does not offer PhD courses. Some courses are actually taught in a PhD level like Measure Theory (to Abstract Measure, Radon-Nikodym, Fubini's Theorem)

There are many people this year only posting admission results here without mentioning any useful applicant profile information. To be honest, this is meaningless. This forum should serve as a useful data for future (and current) Math PhD applicants to know there chances. If you are not going to tell us any information about yourself and how you got these results, then don't bother posting. We don't want to see a random list of universities with meaningless results beside them, and no further information. Any troll can do that. You can instead post these under the Sweat Thread topic, since they have no value here.

As someone said on last year's results thread:
"Some people just want to share how they have done, and where they are going with this community. We are all people celebrating each other and also working to get in. So the posts are not inherently about being helpful, I don't think. Gate's open come on in and all that."

As an applicant for fall 2023, I'm now less concerned with evaluating my chances of admission and more concerned with seeing when acceptances and interview invitations are being sent out. I imagine that, as has been done before, some people will update their posts with personal information once the application cycle is over.

I understand. But I think it's better to post these in the Sweat Thread or on GradCafe for instance. We can keep this topic more professional as to serve as a very important reference/data set, since you can't find these anywhere else on the internet. Anyways, best of luck for everyone!

I understand it's nice to have context for other folks' backgrounds, but I mean the forum mostly serves to calm nerves about the decision timelines of universities due to the uncertainties of graduate programs' deadlines. Even with more details about our profiles, I don't really see how this is actionable information to folks applying or looking to apply, at this stage it's not like we are able to reorient our focuses or experiences in any meaningful form. Sure, it may help future applicants see which universities they should be targeting with their profile, but I mean I'm sure you can roughly get an idea of that with existing information on the site.

I can also make up information about myself and fake admission results, it would be even more detrimental for future (and current) Math PhD applicants to judge their chances if that's what they are looking for. I use this place mainly as a second gradcafe to see interview and decision dates of different schools for this and past years, a lot of the dates posted here are not available on Gradcafe. It's also a place to keep track of the dates of my own admission results.

For me, the details about the profile did help me when I was applying or even before it, and I believe this is the purpose of this thread. You can calm nerves about the decision timelines in other threads, there are various threads in the forum.

Your argument makes no sense, if you fake admission results with a complete profile you can fake it without one too. If anything most trolls here are those that do not have a profile, just randomly posting dates and stuff. Use gradcafe or the sweat thread for this nonsense

This thread as it stands is quite useless. It was designed so people post their profiles and their results that way future applicants can decide if their profile is competitive for which schools. Not to be a place to put down when you got an interview invite or admission. Grad cafe and the sweat thread serve this (IMO pointless) purpose admirably.

How can it make no sense? If I'm a troll and only post fake admission dates, then people don't know my background and they will not judge their chances based on my post. If I fake my profile and say I got into Harvard with 0 research experience, it would mislead people and be more detrimental, wouldn't it? It doesn't make sense he said Any troll can do that, it's not like trolls can not make a fake profile.

I don't see many if not any trolls in this forum, who do you think is a troll here? It doesn't make sense to post decision/interview dates on sweat thread, this thread is called 2023 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results.

For me, Scholar, and a lot of people, decision and interview dates are a lot more important than looking at more student profiles. I don't understand why so much hate. Admission dates are quite useful for future applicants to judge when they will receive the decisions, a lot of dates posted here are not on gradcafe and this forum has way less trolls than Gradcafe from my experience.

Got rejected from Colorado Boulder, upset for a (bit long) while.

Differential geometry, especially for Index theory and global analysis, is my favorite mathematics topic, and with all facilities in U.S., I just found CU Boulder has several professors who have the similar research interests and also that I may reach (for other top schools, I could not reach), so Boulder, in some sense, is an ideal place for me......

Good luck to we guys!

I received an email which reminded me to check my status, then it turns out it is a rejection letter.

If you had not received such an email yet, then maybe I shall say ''congratulation'' to you.

GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 720 (60%) ouch...

TOEFL Score: N/A

Program Applying:

Research Experience: 3 REUs and 2 small projects with a prof at my school. The small projects didn't result in anything. One of my REUs resulted in a publication in a professional journal (a good one I think) and I presented the work of another one of my REUs at a conference. I will be doing a poster presentation for my most recent REU this winter.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean's list, semester honors, and a couple smaller departmental scholarships. I've also got a pretty big merit based scholarship from my school.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: I've done over 100 hours of tutoring for calculus, analysis, linear algebra, and abstract algebra.
Math Courses Taken: Quite a few. Almost all of the upper division math courses offered at my school plus a couple grad courses, including one that is attached to a qual. I've taken the honors versions of any math course that I could.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I think my rec letters will be pretty strong. One is coming from a prof who's had me for an upper division course and a grad course (I ask a lot of questions in class and show up to office hours frequently, so I shouldn't get a generic letter), and the other two are research mentors that were very happy with my work. My subject GRE is pretty bad but thankfully I only have to submit it to a couple schools. I'm hoping that my high GPA coming from a well-known university will make up for it.

Safety & Plan to Withdrawn: Although I withdrew most of my "safeties", I guess I am rejected/waitlisted by all of them. I don't know if there exist things like "over-qualification", but this shows there is no actual safety schools in Ph.D application.
Madison - Math PhD Rejected Informally 2/14 and formally 2/20
UCSD - Math PhD Withdrawn 2/15
UIUC - Math PhD Withdrawn 2/1 - Ignore my withdrawal and waitlisted 2/22
UMN - Math PhD Withdrawn 2/1
JHU - Math PhD Rejected 2/8
USC - Math PhD Withdrawn 2/1
Purdue - Math PhD Withdrawn 2/15

Master:
JHU - AMS MSE Admitted 3/2

Not really, a professor (my potential advisor) just asked me some about backgrounds and some details of my REU.

Any indication as to how many they were interviewing?
