Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
I am creating this year's sweat thread. As usual, this is to talk about our nervousness and try to relieve our (or each other's) stress.
I noticed that every year is becoming harder than the one before it. This is not strange since everything is becoming more competitive. But I hope it will not be a very rough admissions year. Good luck everyone!

Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
Currently trying to enjoy the relative quiet until late January! (when I was told Oxford will send out interview invites - hopefully no surprise decisions to throw me in "waiting for decisions" mode before then!)
Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
Hopefully, we'll see some movements soon (based on historical data). =))

Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
Anyone got an email from the Brown applied math dept. this morning?
Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
I'm applying for pure math, but I'm curious what the email said?

Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
Same here
I'm not sure if it is called nervousness, but I just want to know the decisions to have an idea where I will end up. I don't know why it takes them so longgg
Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
today I dreamed of an admission committee looking at my application materials and laughing with each other at me

Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
I dreamt of getting waitlisted at A&M. (bit random) I had another admissions-related dream last night but it's slipped my mind by now. I wonder if I'll manage to collect all 15 decisions in dream form by the end of the admissions cycle!
Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
I dreamt of getting accepted at Ohio State University, and I got accepted 5 hours later.

Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
I know there's a little while before results start coming in but I'm just getting so agitated and impatient. Checking these forums or gradcafe multiple times a day.
Gotta try to get on with my life for now.

Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
Totally feel you! Running in the park helps me to forget about these stuffs as I tend to be exhausted afterward and hence forget about checking the application status.
Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
Schools usually release decisions in a set week or so every year, check gradcafe and write down past dates reduced my anxiety a bit, so I won't mindless checking application portals, gradcafe, etc.nicorobin22 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 12:54 amTotally feel you! I wrote down a list of past decision dates for all the schools I applied to. Most of the schools I applied to release their decisions 1/25 - 2/10, it's getting close

Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
The update email from Michigan kind of scares me. It said they expect to admit 5% of applicants, but for the past 5 years the selectivity for the program has been between 13%-19% (source: https://rackham.umich.edu/about/program-statistics/). They said they got about 650 applicants, but there were more applicants the last two years. So is this a funding issue? Is there decreased funding across the board at other programs? Also, they are really wrong for putting the subject line as "U-M Math PhD Admissions Update" :/

Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
The economy is taking a pretty bad hit right now due to inflation so I think many grad programs in all fields are going to admit a little less this year. I would definitely ask your profs about this thoMathQueen wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 3:41 pmThe update email from Michigan kind of scares me. They are SO wrong for the subject line of that email. I about dropped my phone in the mud walking to class :/MathQueen wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 3:41 pmThe update email from Michigan kind of scares me. Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
They sent a similar email saying about 10% and 5% things last year too (confirmed with my one of my friends who applied last year), but ended up admitting 14% applicants.MathQueen wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 3:41 pmThe update email from Michigan kind of scares me. Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
They used the same email (with the 10%) last year. College endowments over the past few years (ignoring 2022) have soared, so I don't expect the economy to factor into this.
Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
Anyone hear anything from CMU yet.. I heard that last year they sent out the first round acceptances by now.
Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
Some one on gradcafe has received interview notification from Dartmouth. Has Dartmouth sent out all the invitations that day? Or do they send out invitations in a few days?

Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
I've gotten 2 emails from them so far. I interpret this last email as "offers will come out soon which will then turn into rolling admissions".

Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
Same. My friend and I thought that we were waitlisted because of the wording "we expect to make more offers in the following weeks" so we got worried lol. We were probably just overthinking itCryinInside wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 3:00 pmI've gotten 2 emails from them so far. Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
Berkeley sent a stupid erroneous email congratulating me on submitting my application just now (duh..). Gosh that scared the shit out of me and my heart was gonna stop. Lord have mercy on me

Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
Rejected from UWashington's applied math PhD program, but received an offer for funded masters (TA).
Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
Berkeley worried me when the email preview told me to pay the application fee.
Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
I've heard of some applicants getting emails from faculty members before admission decisions come out. Is this normal?

Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
Anyone know whether UNC's grad student weekend is still part of the admissions process? They sent invites Jan 24 but didn't specify whether there will be interviews happening.

Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
There is a gradcafe post about an acceptance e-mail to UC Davis. Did anybody else hear from them? (If so, are you pure/applied)?

Anyone here apply to European schools? How are you prepping for interviews?
Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
Poked Northwestern about my status. They still haven't sent out any offer. If you are not rejected today, you are on sort of shortlist.
Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
Has anyone else heard from Georgia Tech? I've only seen the one acceptance on GradCafe.

Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
It seems like last year there were two waves of acceptances/rejections (one around now, and another the 2nd week of Feb) - any indication on whether this will happen again?
Re: Fall 2023 Sweat Thread
Received rejection from Alabama. Not unexpected, since my GPA is far too low for an international student. Probably will be rejected from schools ranked even lower down. Shall have to continue in grad program in which I am already enrolled in home country. Good luck to all!
