Does anyone know how likely Yale takes people from the waitlist for pure math? Based on the website, Yale had a very small cohort for past years but I am wondering how many people they usually send offers to and how long the waitlist is.
Based on what I've heard from many people, the student experience at Yale is pretty terrible.
Student at Yale here! I think, a while back, the department got a reputation for being a bit small and mellow, but my experiences here have been quite pleasant. The graduate students, especially the younger ones, have a vibrant and tight-knit community, and the research scene is stellar in many areas.
As for the waitlist, I really have no idea. But, if accepted, you should strongly consider it.

Heard that Madison already sent out offers and waitlist, has anyone haven't heard anything back yet? Does that mean rejection?

I applied to 11 schools in total (applied math). So far I got offer from brown, waitlisted by duke and rej from Berkeley. I still haven’t heard back from MIT, Harvard, Courant(I assume I have been rejected) UCLA, Princeton, JHU, Stanford, and UPenn.
Brown is one of the most supportive and welcoming environments among graduate schools I have encountered. If you are at all interested in AG, Algebraic Combinatorics, or another represented field I would highly consider it! That is an incredible result.
WOW that sounds nice. I also have heard a lot of good things about brown. My focus is mainly on applied math, which they are famous for I think? But not sure which specific field they are good at. Do u have any idea? Also I wonder the supportive environment you talked about is for the applied math dept or math dept.
Oh! The applied math department is just as friendly if not more, and in addition it is more diverse, well funded, and even air conditioned.

Got Waterloo Pure Math PhD rejection today - randomly checked the portal and it showed "deny" - I thought I had the option to deny so I was accepted
Wasn't expecting to get in but still hurts a bit - especially cause I don't have a solid acceptance yet.

Pat pat. Offers will come! It’s only mid February.

Any news on Oxford decisions? Got told it would be ~2 weeks after the interview, which would be today or tomorrow for me

Thank you, kind person. Yes, I think seeing the UIUC and Purdue offers on this forum I got a bit impatient to hear from somewhere, and I wasn't expecting Waterloo to post a rejection so early.
Will try and chill a bit and see how it goes.

Someone on Gradcafe said people who haven't heard from UW Madison yet have been rejected. Might be hearsay. A shame, first rejection I'm actually disappointed with.

Does anyone know if CU Boulder applied math has a visit day? I got accepted, but have not heard anything about it. Also, does anyone know about the grad student culture at Boulder?

To people who got an offer from Northwestern: if you are not considering Northwestern please decline the offer.

They have done one in past years, seems like they usually send info about visit day in mid to late Feb. I also got an admit and haven't gotten visit info yet either.
I've only heard stories, haven't attended yet, but supposedly applied math is pretty tight knit for a relatively large cohort compared to some schools. The newer graduate student government has been gaining power with the school and getting better deals for students in the past couple years, hopefully that ball keeps rolling. I've heard really lovely things about applied math being very supportive and welcoming. Fingers crossed.

For those who are doing it: Can y'all please stop clogging up the Profiles/Admissions thread with your comments? Just use the sweat thread instead if you want to ask questions and talk, or PM the people. Idk if I'm only the one annoyed by that lol

Should I give up hope if I haven't gotten an interview invite from Duke yet? It sounds like they are already making decisions based on multiple interview rounds and it's been radio silent for me from them, so I'm assuming I should just take that as a soft rejection.
I saw on GradCafe several people waitlisted by Duke and I didn't receive any email. Maybe I should give up hope now but their rejection comes sooooo slow...

I think so. My friend (an undergrad at UWM and knows the committee chair) told me that if one hasn't heard anything from UWM then it's a rej.

Hi guys, I emailed Minnesota Twin Cities and got a response. I'm waitlisted; I'd assume if you weren't contacted that you're either waitlisted or rejected at this point. I don't think emailing will hurt at this point in case you're hesitant to do so.
(edit: i'll leave this up, but it seems other people beat me to the news lol)

It’s the impression I got when they said “If and when committed students notify us of a decision not to attend BU, you will be notified via email that you have been removed from the waiting list and that you are now offered admission to the fall 2023 class.”

I didn't expect this though since Harvard is not famous for applied math and one of the focus areas under the program matches my interest very well.

This doesn’t have to mean that they sent out any initial offers yet. They might just have made their waitlist prior to making final decisions on who they’re accepting. BU has a larger department and I’m sure someone would’ve posted by now, either in the forum or on gradcafe, if they got accepted.

Not sure, you're probably better off asking geometers/topologists at your institution. They're a great program all around, so I'm sure they're solid in geo/top

I logged into the portal for Tufts tonight and noticed there was an application for the MS in Mathematics program submitted on 2/16/23 even though I applied for the Mathematics PhD on 11/12/22. Does this mean they are probably considering me for the Masters program and not the PhD program and submitted an application on my behalf, or is this normal for the process? I am sure I will hear back soon but wasn't sure if this was common or heard of. I haven't heard anything otherwise from Tufts. Thanks!

I just looked on my portal and I see the same thing. MS in Mathematics submitted on 2/16/23. Also if I go into my application for PhD it's empty, they transferred it all to the MS application.

If you hadn't emailed a professor initially and got confirmation that he wants you, it is pointless to apply to their (small) AM program.

Good point. I didn’t even notice they have only ~35 phds in total… but I think applied math program for most of the top universities are relatively small? (~10-15 students per year?)
