2023 REU Programs
No one has made a forum for 2023 REUs yet so here it is:
Year: Third year/Junior
Institution: Top 40-60 Flagship State School
GPA: 3.95
Major: Mathematics & Music Performance
Minors: Computer Science
Type of Student: domestic white male
Research: Research in knot theory for two years in high school (no papers but several conference presentations); a reading/research project in Gerrymandering and topological data analysis at home institution; a research project in algebraic geometry at home institution, received funding for Summer 2022 and I am writing a paper; one previous REU (a pretty well-known program) in discrete math and algebra for Summer 2021 that resulted in two papers, one currently being written and one submitted and under review at a journal (sole author).
Coursework: (Undergrad) - Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Discrete Math, Abstract Algebra I & II, Real Analysis I & II, Complex Analysis, Combinatorics and Graph Theory
(Grad) - Abstract Algebra I & II, Topology I & II, Algebraic Topology, Topics: Category Theory and Homotopy Theory
Other: Great relationships with my letter writers, with one coming from my algebraic geometry research mentor and the other coming from a professor I have had for several grad topology classes. Moderate amount of competition experience from middle school up to first year of undergrad and good tutoring experience. Familiar with several programming languages and computer algebra systems. Also a music major in violin and have been playing with several regional and professional orchestras within a 3 hour radius of my university.

Respectfully, I did not know someone could apply to so many programs - like that it was humanly possible

Re: 2023 REU Programs
You've just gotta write a modular SOP. I had a generic SOP (that usually ended up submitting at around 700 words total) where I only really needed to change about 200 words for each program, and all I would change is what I found appealing in the program.analyzefar wrote: ↑Thu Feb 09, 2023 6:23 pmDid you use chatGPT to help with writing SOPs? Re: 2023 REU Programs
Math and CS major here. 3.81 overall and 4.0 major gpa. Junior at a top 50 school that is especially known for CS and engineering. No research, just a project on probability theory and a directed reading program on enumerative combinatorics. Have taken all of calc, odes, two linear algebra classes, applied combinatorics, proofs, prob theory, real analysis I, info theory, stat theory, and statistical learning. Also have a lot of programming experience in python and java and even C. Have taken algo analysis, data structures and algorithms, oop, and systems and architecture. Not so relevant but coding helps with stat and data science math programs. Domestic white male, veteran.
So far,
Boise - Data-driven security REU (cs): accepted, didnt take
Maryland REU-CAAR (cs): submitted (top 3 choice) accepted, didnt take
Michigan REU (math): submitted, ghosted so far
Williams SMALL reu (math): officially rejected on 03/09
Montana State reu (cs): accepted, didnt take
NC State (math): accepted and COMMITTED
Univ Maryland (math): submitted, ghosted so far
This is probably all I'm applying to. All the CS ones are in ML research or something very similar btw. If anyone has done an opportunity at any of these REUs or a similar one, hmu!
Updated on 03/09 with application status. I have committed to DRUMS at NC State.
Good luck y'all.

Here's the link:
https://math.indiana.edu/undergraduate/ ... jects.html
I found it at the bottom at the main page!
Re: 2023 REU Programs
Asking a recommendation for this was a pain:
My prof said that it was "inappropriate" that some programs ask him to email the letters directly instead of the program giving him a submission link.
And he got mad bc he claimed he never received the letter, even though turns out he just did not check thoroughly lmao

Does anyone think we will hear from Yale SUMRY or Williams SMALL this week? They've historically released decisions around that time-frame in years past. Has anyone heard anything yet?

Do you know if shortlists came out for the Local Rings and Completions project? I just know shortlists came out awhile ago for both number theory and probability, and interactions with logic, so I'm assuming all shortlists are basically outHurewiczFan2024 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 15, 2023 1:47 amDo you know if shortlists came out for the Local Rings and Completions project? Check out the Einstein Institute REU. The deadline was yesterday but they accept late applications and 1-2 days shouldn't matter.

Re: 2023 REU Programs
I understand REUS are tough but does U Minn Duluth have like an esteemed reputation or something? As expected I got rejected but looking at their lists they all come from crazy prestigious schools and go on to do cool things:

Re: 2023 REU Programs
duluth is indeed a super prestigious program. imo it doesn’t really serve the purpose of reus as gallian seems to accept only the people from the best schools (most of which already have a ton of opportunities to do research etc). i personally find the program at least as elitist as it’s prestigious because there are people from “worse” schools who know a lot of math/have bunch of research experience but literally not a single such person got into duluth in the last 10 (possibly even more) years. it’s just that the math doesn’t add up. other than that, gallian seems like a super nice guy and i am pretty sure the experience is super fun and academically rewarding.JerryM wrote: ↑Sat Feb 18, 2023 4:13 pmI understand REUS are tough but does U Minn Duluth have like an esteemed reputation or something? Re: 2023 REU Programs
It definitely used to be a highly prestigious program, but it's in decline. At one point, it was probably the best REU in the country. Professor Gallian is getting older and the REU no longer has NSF funding, so it seems to be getting close to shutting down. I imagine the only reason we're hearing back so early is so they could fill the spots before other programs send out decisions (don't get me wrong, the REU is still a great program with good research opportunities).JerryM wrote: ↑Sat Feb 18, 2023 4:13 pmI understand REUS are tough but does U Minn Duluth have like an esteemed reputation or something? Re: 2023 REU Programs
^^^ program is definitely elitist and prioritizes competition experience over research experience in the admissions process. This isn't even mentioning the fact that they take on students more than once.soyutcebir wrote: ↑Sat Feb 18, 2023 5:20 pmduluth is indeed a super prestigious program. imo it doesn’t really serve the purpose of reus as gallian seems to accept only the people from the best schools (most of which already have a ton of opportunities to do research etc). i personally find the program at least as elitist as it’s prestigious because there are people from “worse” schools who know a lot of math/have bunch of research experience but literally not a single such person got into duluth in the last 10 (possibly even more) years. it’s just that the math doesn’t add up. other than that, gallian seems like a super nice guy and i am pretty sure the experience is super fun and academically rewarding.JerryM wrote: ↑Sat Feb 18, 2023 4:13 pmI understand REUS are tough but does U Minn Duluth have like an esteemed reputation or something? I emailed after I applied and I was told that they weren't reviewing my application. I got the impression that they didn't even look at it (probably because of when I submitted it). Not super bummed though because the projects weren't really that interesting to me, I applied just for the sake of applyingnotsatos wrote: ↑Tue Feb 21, 2023 10:29 pmHow did you hear about the UCLA CAM decision?HurewiczFan2024 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 08, 2023 7:56 pmNo one has made a forum for 2023 REUs yet so here it is:

Re: 2023 REU Programs
I just emailed and got a response saying that I'm on their backup list (I had not received any other email prior than just emailing a couple of hours ago) — citing that my background was in pure mathematics rather than the applied/computation program. I applied on the fifteenth of February, so I do not understand why they didn't read your application — my current university is around the LA area and I think proximity to UCLA was a very important factor for them. (They also said that over 200 people applied and they only had 25 slots.)HurewiczFan2024 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 21, 2023 10:55 pmI emailed after I applied and I was told that they weren't reviewing my application.
