2023 REU Programs
Re: 2023 REU Programs
I got an acceptance from Northwestern dynamics, but they want a decision by Feb 27
-- would it be okay/worthwhile to ask for a bit of an extension, or would that jeopardize my spot in the program? I won't hear back from some other REU's for a little bit so I would optimally like a bit more time.

Re: 2023 REU Programs
Before asking for an extension, I would recommend that you email the other programs you applied to. Some of them may be able to give you a decision before feb 27. Depending on what they tell you then you can ask for an extension if you need itjeffible wrote: ↑Wed Feb 22, 2023 5:22 pmI got an acceptance from Northwestern dynamics, but they want a decision by Feb 27-- would it be okay/worthwhile to ask for a bit of an extension, or would that jeopardize my spot in the program? Re: 2023 REU Programs
Year: First year
Institution: R1, otherwise nothing special
GPA: 3.5
Major: math (4.0 major gpa)
Type of Student: domestic
Research: 1 NSF-funded REU, nothing else.
Coursework: (Undergrad) - Linear Algebra, Abstract Algebra 1&2, Real Analysis 1&2, 1 cs/math class
(Grad) - 1 cs/math class
Other: Letter writers don't hate me? Probably didn't customize personal statements/cover letters enough for each program. Oh well.
Waiting for the rejection emails to start polluting my inbox:
UVA REU (Representation theory and NT)
Tufts REU
UMN Twin Cities REU
UT Tyler REU
NYC Discrete Math REU
CSUSB REU
Texas A&M REU
Texas State REU
Lafayette REU
CMU Geometry and Toplogy REU

What should be the purpose of emailing? Essentially yeah. Sometimes they'll already know if you're shortlisted or are planning to reject you, or can speed up that process to match your timeline.thelawfulduck23 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 23, 2023 7:15 pmWhat should be the purpose of emailing? Re: 2023 REU Programs
I'm not sure. Maybe you're on some internal waitlist -- but I received an email from Peter May about my waitlist status directly so perhaps they do notify waitlists/rejections in batches. Though it will probably be a while until people reject their offers (if they do), since UChicago is one of the first programs to release decisions...thatonenerd wrote: ↑Sat Feb 25, 2023 4:12 pmWhat might it mean if I didn’t get a rejection email? Has anyone heard back (acceptance/rejection/waitlist) from Yale SUMRY yet?
Re: 2023 REU Programs
Year: Freshman
Institution: Large Public, ranked ~40th in the US
GPA: 4.0
Major: Physics (with a planned double major in math)
Type of Student: white male
Research: No pure math research, some recent research experience with a physics professor at my home university
Coursework: Calculus, Linear Algebra, Intro to proofs
Other relevant info: My university gets out very late, so for some of these I would be missing part of the first week of the program if I was accepted. I applied to basically every program I could find with a late enough start date that I also met the prerequisites for. Unfortunately those programs happened to be all the super competitive ones. I understand that as a first year from a large research university there's a very slim chance I get into anywhere I'm applying, but I'm excited to learn more about math research and I want to take advantage of every opportunity I can
Applied to: (in order of date applied, most applications submitted on the day of the deadline)
- Chicago Apprentice Program - Rejected 2/26
- MIT SGI - Rejected 3/20
- Baruch - Rejected 3/23
- UC Davis
- UMD
- Texas State - Likely Rejected
- Bryn Mawr Mathily-EST

Has anyone heard from NCSU DRUMS?
Re: 2023 REU Programs
Yea, they sent acceptances Feb 16 like they said. Anyone know why the stipend/funding is kinda small or how "good/prestigious" the program is?

more than 500 applicants in total, 360 of them from outside the uchicago. 15 spots is for non-uchicago students, the rest (about 80 spots I believe) is for uchicago students.sotinai wrote: ↑Wed Mar 01, 2023 1:33 pm15 spots??? I applied to Georgia Tech and UVA, but haven't heard back from either. I also haven't heard back from any of the other REUs I applied for, which are Einstein Institute, UC Irvine/Leiden, UC Davis, Boston University, Towson University, University of Maryland, and University of Minnesota (Twin Cities). If anyone has any intel on those, let me know - I know one person mentioned getting an interview offer for Einstein Institute but beyond that I haven't seen anything.paullynomial wrote: ↑Thu Mar 02, 2023 6:34 pmAnybody heard back from those MATH REUs?

I haven't heard back from any others either, would be interested if anyone has info about Clemson/UVA/SUAMI/Northwestern.JP wrote: ↑Thu Mar 02, 2023 6:48 pmI applied to Georgia Tech and UVA, but haven't heard back from either. Re: 2023 REU Programs
The Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech) is hosting an REU this summer. See this LinkedIn post at bit.ly/3SSHb1Z for full details. $550 per week stipend. Apply here by March 15th: bit.ly/3muRvRj
Here are the topics!
1. Speedier Simulations with Professor Sou-Cheng Choi and Fred Hickernell working on Monte Carlo methods and their implementation in the Python package QMCPy.
2. From the formation of snowflakes to crystal growth with Professor Shuwang Li working on studying the physics of snowflake formation, its modelling, and its simulation.
3. Learning and modeling collective behaviors with Professor Ming Zhong and Yubin Lu using machine learning tools to learn the dynamics of collective behaviors.
I know these professors and they're all great advisors and mentors for research in applied math. Chicago in the summer is a wonderful place to be!!
