Has anyone done an REU at Cornell? How was the experience and were you able to get publishable results?

Yeah I was accepted to the probabilistic expressive power of neural networks project yesterday.HatFinisher629 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 08, 2023 12:21 amWere you accepted? I'm waiting on an answer from them most
Has anyone heard back yet? I had an interview on Monday, and I thought they said they would make decisions on Tuesday.):thereexistsnoepsilon wrote: ↑Mon Mar 06, 2023 7:31 pmLafayette is announcing results probably this week.
Have you been accepted into RIPS?AvailableProject4 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 10, 2023 1:46 pmAnyone participate in UCLA RIPS in the past? Did you get anything worth publishing or was it just industry work? I too am wondering this. Anyone have any info?
I have no idea, I only received the acceptance for the contact homology project and the email did not mention any other projectsHurewiczFan2024 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 11, 2023 7:14 pmAny word on the Homotopy Continuation and Monodromy project?

I have not heard back yet. I emailed them a few days ago about my application status but never got a response. What project did you interview for? Mine was for the orderings of point sets project. Maybe the mentor for your project sent out rejections and mine didn't?thereexistsnoepsilon wrote: ↑Sun Mar 12, 2023 4:21 pmI got an rejection email this morning. I interviewed for the Agent Based Models project, so your mentor is probably still finalizing the people working on their project.AnalysisParalysis wrote: ↑Sun Mar 12, 2023 5:14 pmI have not heard back yet. I was accepted into the program, and they sent out a group email for what I think is the entire program for the summer. It seems like they are set, but that's weird that they have not reached out to you.thereexistsnoepsilon wrote: ↑Sun Mar 12, 2023 11:24 pmI interviewed for the Agent Based Models project, so your mentor is probably still finalizing the people working on their project.AnalysisParalysis wrote: ↑Sun Mar 12, 2023 5:14 pmI have not heard back yet. calcifer wrote: ↑Sun Mar 12, 2023 2:15 amPosting this for past me who convinced themself they had no future in math research after stalking forums like these. Hang in there y’all, REUs are more competitive than grad programs.
Year: 3rd year
Institution: Top 20 for Math
GPA: 3.7, I got a lot of B's early on. Math is hard
Major: Pure Mathematics.
Research: 1 previous REU; 3 previous reading projects with a grad student and postdocs on differential and algebraic topology.
Coursework: (Undergrad): Real Analysis, Abstract Algebra, Differential Geometry, Topology, Combinatorics, Discrete Math, Algorithms
(Grad): Algebraic Topology 1+2, Riemmanian Geometry 1+2
Letters: Letter writers were my previous REU advisor (postdoc) which was probably strong and math faculty advisor (associate prof, not related to my research interests), probably strongish but filler mostly.
Misc: No competition experience. Switched from physics & applied math spring of 2nd year. It's never too late
Rutgers - Accepted
Baruch - Accepted
Chicago - Accepted
Michigan - ?? Presumed rejection
Georgia Tech - Offered interview, rescinded
UVA - Rejected
SUMRY - Ghosted but then got an email asking if I was still interested?
CMU SUMAI - Rescinded
Yeah, I finally got a rejection email today. They also updated their website. There were apparently over 260 applicants this year.thatonenerd wrote: ↑Mon Mar 13, 2023 7:23 pmI emailed the advisor for Lafayette and he said that all spots are filled at this time
third round offers from SUMRY. they made 2nd round offers on the 9th.activator73 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 6:46 amUC Davis sent out (initial?) offers today, and SUMRY sent out second round offers yesterday.

GPA: 3.95
Major: Mathematics & Music Performance
Minors: Computer Science
Type of Student: domestic white male
Research: Research in knot theory for two years in high school (no papers but several conference presentations); a reading/research project in Gerrymandering and topological data analysis at home institution; a research project in algebraic geometry at home institution, received funding for Summer 2022 and I am writing a paper; one previous REU (a pretty well-known program) in discrete math and algebra for Summer 2021 that resulted in two papers, one currently being written and one submitted and under review at a journal (sole author).
Coursework: (Undergrad) - Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Discrete Math, Abstract Algebra I & II, Real Analysis I & II, Complex Analysis, Combinatorics and Graph Theory
(Grad) - Abstract Algebra I & II, Topology I & II, Algebraic Topology, Topics: Category Theory and Homotopy Theory
